Taxonomy & naming
Homatula wujiangensis was described by Ding and Deng in 1990, the specific epithet referring to the Wujiang (Wu River), the major upper Yangtze tributary in Chongqing Municipality, southwestern China, where the type series was collected. It sits in the genus Homatula, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches — within the broader loach superfamily Cobitoidea.
Nemacheilid taxonomy has been reshuffled repeatedly as the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart, and Homatula itself has absorbed and shed species over the decades; the Catalog of Fishes remains the authority for the currently valid combination, which this profile follows. Homatula wujiangensis is one of at least five recognized Homatula species native to the upper Yangtze basin, alongside close relatives such as H. variegata, H. berezowskii and H. potanini, several of which occupy separate, similarly restricted tributary systems of the same drainage.
Morphology
As typical of Nemacheilidae, Homatula wujiangensis is a small, elongate, essentially scaleless-bodied loach with a flattened underside suited to gripping rock and gravel in current rather than swimming in open water. The original description records a dorsal fin with eight branched rays and a body pattern of faint saddle-like markings rather than bold banding — a subdued, cryptic look consistent with a fish that spends its life pressed against streambed cover.
Like many of its nemacheilid relatives it likely carries the family's characteristic small, erectile suborbital spine and near-naked skin, though detailed anatomical description for this particular species remains thin. The type series is reported to be lost, and the species has apparently not been recollected since its original description, which leaves much of its fine morphology undocumented rather than contradicted — an honest gap rather than an unknown feature to speculate on.
Habitat
Homatula wujiangensis is known only from the Wujiang River drainage — an upper Yangtze River tributary system — with its type locality in Nanchuan County, Chongqing Municipality, China. As with other Homatula species, it is presumed to occupy mountain streams with rapid or gentle current over rocky and gravelly substrate, the typical nemacheilid setting of clear, cool, well-oxygenated flowing water at modest depth, sometimes extending to spring-fed or partly subterranean stream sections used by related species in the genus.
This is a cool-to-moderate temperate stream fish of inland China, not a warm, still-water species — general habitat data for Nemacheilidae puts many temperate stream-dwelling members of the family around 68–75 °F in a pH range of roughly 6.0–8.0, over a rock, gravel and sand bottom with algal growth. Given how little targeted fieldwork exists for this specific species, its precise depth, flow and water-chemistry preferences should be treated as inferred from the family and genus rather than measured directly for it.
Feeding
Homatula species are documented as benthic micro-predators and grazers, taking algae, organic detritus and small aquatic invertebrates — mayfly larvae (Ephemeroptera) and other micro-invertebrates — off the stream bottom. This fits the broader nemacheilid pattern of small fish that forage constantly over rock and gravel in current rather than feeding in open water or at the surface.
No aquarium feeding record exists for Homatula wujiangensis specifically, since the species has not been documented in the trade or the hobby. Based on its genus and family, a keeper attempting to replicate its diet would offer small sinking live and frozen foods — bloodworm, daphnia, small crustaceans — alongside some algae-based food, rather than relying on flake, which a bottom-oriented micro-predator like this is likely to ignore.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Homatula wujiangensis. The species' apparent rarity — undetected since its 1990 description — means there is no field or aquarium record of pairing, timing, or spawning triggers to report, and this profile does not invent one.
What can be said comes from the wider family: nemacheilid stone and brook loaches typically reproduce as egg-scatterers, releasing eggs into flowing water over gravel with no pairing bond or nest-building behaviour documented, generally cued to seasonal flow and temperature changes in their home streams. Whether Homatula wujiangensis follows that pattern specifically is inferred, not observed.
Breeding
Homatula wujiangensis is not known to have been bred, or even reliably observed, in captivity. Its family's typical reproductive mode — the honest baseline for stone and brook loaches generally — is egg-scattering over gravel and stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry afterward.
There is no aquarium trade or hobby-breeding record for this species to draw on, and given that it has apparently not been recollected in the wild since its original description, any claim about its breeding biology beyond the family-level pattern would be speculation. The straightforward, honest statement is that this is a data-sparse species that is rarely if ever seen, let alone spawned, outside its native stream.
In the aquarium
Homatula wujiangensis is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense — it does not appear to be in the ornamental trade, and there is no keeping record to draw on. This profile exists to document the species accurately rather than to recommend it as a purchase.
Were a keeper ever to encounter true wild-collected Homatula, the safe general approach — extrapolated from Nemacheilidae as a family — would be a cool, well-oxygenated, current-driven aquarium with a rock and gravel substrate and a mature biofilm surface to graze, plus the usual nemacheilid caution around medication: like most loaches this fish is likely near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-strength doses. None of this has been verified for Homatula wujiangensis specifically, and it should be read as informed inference from its relatives, not species-specific care advice.
Conservation
Homatula wujiangensis has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. It is known only from its Wujiang River type locality in Chongqing, and its apparent absence from collections since the 1990 description — along with the loss of its type series — is itself a conservation-relevant fact worth stating plainly: this is either a genuinely rare, narrowly restricted stream endemic, or a species that has simply escaped further sampling effort.
As with many small, geographically restricted Homatula and other nemacheilid species in the upper Yangtze basin, the generic pressures on this kind of fish are water pollution and habitat disturbance in mountain stream systems — damming, sedimentation and water-quality decline — rather than any documented trade pressure, since the species has no known presence in the aquarium trade. Given the sparse data, the most responsible conservation statement is that its status is unresolved and warrants renewed field survey rather than assumption in either direction.
