Taxonomy & naming
Homatula wuliangensis was formally described by Min, Yang and Chen in 2012 in the journal Zootaxa, based on specimens collected from the Lancang River (the Chinese stretch of the upper Mekong) on Wuliang Mountain, near Pu-Er City in Jingdong County, Yunnan Province. The species epithet wuliangensis refers directly to this type locality, the Wuliang Mountain range.
It belongs to the genus Homatula, within the family Nemacheilidae — the true stone and brook loaches, by far the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, and a group whose genus-level classification (the old Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus complex splitting into Homatula, Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and others) has been extensively revised over the past two decades. The original description separates H. wuliangensis from its close relatives H. anguillioides and H. pycnolepis on a combination of body markings, scale coverage, vertebral count and fin-lobe proportions.
Morphology
The type material for Homatula wuliangensis includes a holotype of about 7 in standard length, a substantial size for a stone loach and towards the larger end of the genus. The species has an elongated, scaled body carrying 22 to 26 dark body markings along its flanks, a notably high adipose crest along the back before the dorsal fin, an elongated upper lobe to the caudal fin, short barbels around the mouth, and 41 to 42 vertebrae — all characters the original authors used to separate it from its nearest relatives.
As in other true loaches, the skin bears fine, deeply embedded scales rather than the coarse scaling of many other fish groups, leaving it functionally close to naked and correspondingly sensitive to skin damage, parasites and medication. Nemacheilids as a group also carry a small, erectile spine beneath the eye, though the original description of this species does not detail that structure specifically; treat it as likely present pending confirmation, in line with the family's typical anatomy.
Habitat
Homatula wuliangensis is known only from the Lancang River drainage of Wuliang Mountain, at elevations of roughly 1,274 to 1,781 metres above sea level — solidly montane, foothill stream habitat rather than lowland river. The type series was collected from swift-flowing water over rocky and stony substrates with sand and gravel filling the gaps between stones, with somewhat slower current recorded in the lower reaches of the same system.
The wider Lancang (upper Mekong) basin spans a huge elevational and thermal gradient, from near-freezing headwaters to warm tropical lowlands further downstream. At 1,274–1,2562 ft, the type locality sits in the basin's cooler, fast-flowing middle-to-upper reaches — closer to the cold end of that gradient than the warm lowland end, and consistent with the well-oxygenated, current-swept water that stone loaches of this kind depend on. No dedicated water-chemistry survey of the type locality has been published, so treat the temperature figures given here as a reasoned estimate from the habitat and elevation, not a measured value.
Feeding
No diet study has been published for Homatula wuliangensis specifically. Its family, however, is well characterised: nemacheilid stone and brook loaches are benthic micro-predators, working the stream bed for small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny prey items in fast, clear water. There is no reason to expect this species to differ from that pattern, and its build — an elongated body suited to holding position against current on a coarse substrate — is entirely consistent with a life spent picking invertebrates from among stones and gravel rather than filtering the water column or grazing algae.
Mating
Nothing has been published on courtship, sexing or spawning behaviour in Homatula wuliangensis; no external sexual dimorphism was noted in the original description, and none should be assumed. What can be said comes from the broader family: nemacheilid stone and brook loaches are egg-scatterers, releasing eggs freely into flowing water over gravel and stone rather than pairing off, building nests, or guarding a site. There is no indication of any courtship display or mate-selection behaviour documented for this genus that would apply here.
Breeding
There is no record of Homatula wuliangensis being bred, or even kept, in the aquarium hobby, and the species has no meaningful presence in the trade. Based on the reproductive mode typical of Nemacheilidae, breeding — where it occurs at all — would be expected to follow the family pattern: an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry afterward. Stone and brook loaches of this kind are only rarely bred in captivity even by specialist keepers, and for a species this narrowly known, the honest position is that captive breeding has never been documented and should not be expected.
In the aquarium
Homatula wuliangensis is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense — it has no established presence in the trade, and there is no husbandry record to draw on. Anyone who did encounter wild-collected specimens would need to plan around the general demands of a montane nemacheilid stone loach: cool, fast-moving, heavily oxygenated water over a coarse gravel-and-stone substrate, strong filtration or powerhead-driven flow, and a mature biofilm on hard surfaces for the fish to forage across. Given a likely adult size approaching 7 in, it would need considerably more space than the small brook loaches typically sold in the hobby.
As with other true loaches, its near-scaleless skin means it should be treated cautiously with medications — copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of many standard fish medicines carry more risk for scaleless loaches than for scaled community fish, so a half-dose, closely observed approach is the safer default should treatment ever be needed.
Conservation
Homatula wuliangensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so no conservation category can be assigned to it here — a common situation for narrow-range Asian stream loaches described in the past couple of decades, where formal assessment lags well behind species discovery. Everything known about the species points to a highly restricted range confined to a single mountain drainage system, the kind of distribution that in related, better-studied stone loaches often correlates with vulnerability to damming, sedimentation and other stream-habitat pressures in Yunnan's heavily developed river systems. Without a published assessment or population survey, though, that concern remains an inference from the habitat rather than a documented status, and should be presented as such.
