Taxonomy & naming
Misgurnus oligolepos was described in 1993 (some sources cite the combination as Chen, Shen & Li, 1994, reflecting a discrepancy in the early literature over authorship) for large-scaled pond-loach populations from Chinese and Taiwanese waters. Subsequent taxonomic work reassessed these populations and concluded that the name applies to the same species already described as Paramisgurnus dabryanus, the large-scaled loach. As a result, Misgurnus oligolepos is now treated as a junior synonym and is not a valid species name in current usage — the genus-level placement itself shifted from Misgurnus to the related genus Paramisgurnus.
This kind of reshuffling is common across the pond-loach subfamily: generic boundaries within Cobitidae, and within the wider superfamily Cobitoidea, have been revised repeatedly as molecular and morphological work refines relationships. Morphology
As a member of the family Cobitidae, the true spined and pond loaches, this fish carries the family's signature feature: a small, erectile spine set in a groove beneath each eye, which can be flicked out defensively when the fish is handled or threatened. The body is elongate and only lightly built, covered in very small, deeply embedded scales rather than the naked skin of some related loaches — the "large-scaled" name in Paramisgurnus dabryanus refers to scales that are comparatively larger than those of the true Misgurnus species it resembles, though still small and easily damaged by rough handling or aggressive medication.

Feeding
Like other pond loaches it is a sand-sifting benthic omnivore, working through soft substrate with its barbels to find insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, and readily taking sinking pellets, live and frozen foods such as bloodworm and Daphnia in the aquarium. A fine, soft substrate is important for this feeding style — the fish sifts and roots through the bottom layer rather than picking food from hard gravel or bare glass.
In captivity it is not a fussy feeder and will take a varied diet of sinking prepared foods alongside live or frozen invertebrate foods, but keepers should provide a soft bed so it can express natural foraging behaviour rather than simply grazing off the surface.

Commercial production of pond loaches for the food and ornamental trade in East Asia typically relies on hormone induction to bring broodstock into spawning condition reliably, rather than waiting on natural seasonal cues — a reminder that even where natural spawning is known to occur, most of the animals in trade are not the product of it.
Breeding
As a member of the pond-loach group (Cobitidae), this fish is an egg-scatterer with no parental care — eggs are released among plants or over the substrate and left to develop unattended, not guarded in a cave or mouthbrooded. Several temperate Cobitidae, including true Misgurnus species like the dojo/weather loach, are known to spawn in ponds or in large, cool-to-unheated aquaria when given a seasonal cue, but the honest picture for most pond-loach populations, including the large-scaled loach this name is now synonymized with, is that they are rarely bred deliberately in home aquaria.
Where natural spawning has been documented it happens from roughly March through July as water warms, with adhesive eggs scattered among vegetation. Trade supply, however, leans heavily on hormone-induced spawning by commercial producers rather than on hobbyist tank breeding, so a keeper acquiring this fish should not expect to reproduce it without real effort and a proper seasonal, temperate setup.
In the aquarium
The single most important care point is temperature: this is a temperate-to-subtropical species suited to roughly 61–73 °F and a pH of about 6.0–8.0, not a warm tropical tank. Keeping it constantly warm, as many keepers default to for "loaches" in general, is a mismatch with its biology; an unheated or lightly heated setup that tracks a natural seasonal cycle suits it far better, in the same spirit as the well-known dojo loach.
Provide a soft, fine substrate for burrowing and sifting, since this is core natural behaviour, along with well-oxygenated, clean water and, ideally, other similarly sized, calm tankmates rather than boisterous tropical community fish that expect much warmer water. Being a scaleless-skinned, spine-bearing Cobitid, it is sensitive to copper-based and full-strength medications — treat cautiously and at reduced dose if disease occurs. At a modest maximum size of around 3.5 in, it does not need a huge tank, but it does need cool, stable, well-managed water rather than tropical heat.
