Pangio malayana, the Malayan kuhli loach, is a slender, eel-like cobitid from the forest streams of the Malay Peninsula and northwestern Borneo — a fish that works the sand at night, vanishes into cover by day, and is routinely underfed and under-appreciated in the aquaria it occupies. Like all Pangio, it is near-scaleless, magnifying its sensitivity to medications while making it a frequent early casualty of ich outbreaks. It is a peaceful, social species best kept in a small group on a soft sand substrate with dense cover, warm soft slightly acidic water, and food delivered after the lights go out.

Taxonomy & naming

Pangio malayana was described by M. W. F. Tweedie in 1956, originally placed in the genus Acanthophthalmus — the historical catch-all for what were then known as "prickle-eyes," named for the small spine below the eye. The species epithet malayana refers to Malaya (now peninsular Malaysia), the region of the type locality. All Acanthophthalmus species were eventually transferred to Pangio following morphological and molecular reviews that showed the two genera were not cleanly separable, and Pangio now holds the valid combination recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).

Pangio belongs to the family Cobitidae — the true loaches — within the superfamily Cobitoidea. The kuhli-loach group (Pangio and closely related genera) is sometimes informally separated from the spined loaches (Cobitis) and the dojo/weather loaches (Misgurnus, Barbatula), though all share the family. Older literature and aquarium trade tags may still refer to this species as Acanthophthalmus malayanus; that combination is now a junior synonym.

Morphology

Pangio malayana is a cylindrical, eel-like loach with a pointed snout, small eyes, and a distinctly depressed head profile. The body tapers gradually to a rounded tail. Reported standard length runs to roughly 4–5 in, making it one of the slightly larger Pangio species, though aquarium specimens commonly remain smaller. Coloration is variable but typically shows a pale yellowish or pinkish ground colour overlaid with darker brown to dark grey banding or blotching along the dorsal surface; the undersides are pale.

Like all Pangio, P. malayana has a small, sharp erectile suborbital spine set in a groove beneath each eye. This spine is a defense mechanism and can snag nets, so the fish should be moved in a container. The skin is effectively scaleless to the touch — tiny, deeply embedded scales provide almost no barrier — which is why this species, like all kuhli loaches, is extremely sensitive to copper-based medications and other chemical treatments that penetrate unprotected skin. Four pairs of barbels around the small, inferior mouth aid in locating food in the substrate.

Habitat

Pangio malayana is native to the Sundaland freshwater zone: confirmed from Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak (northwestern Borneo). It inhabits lowland and foothill forest streams — slow to gently flowing, often shaded channels with soft fine substrate of sand and mud, accumulations of leaf litter and submerged roots, and water that is warm, soft, and lightly acidic from the leaching of forest tannins. Stream temperatures in this zone typically range from 75–82 °F, with pH values commonly between 6.0 and 7.0.

This is a burrowing species: fine sand is not merely preferred but functionally necessary in the wild, where P. malayana pushes headfirst into the substrate to hide, thermoregulate, and escape disturbance. The structural complexity of leaf litter, root masses, and woody debris provides the refuge network that keeps the species secure and active. Open, brightly lit streams over coarse gravel are not part of its natural range.

Feeding

Pangio malayana is a micro-omnivore and substrate sifter. In its native streams it works through fine sand and leaf litter after dark, using its barbels to locate small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, tiny crustaceans and other benthic organisms — as well as organic detritus and plant matter. It does not feed at the surface and does not compete for flake food drifting in the water column.

In the aquarium this translates to a diet of sinking foods: high-quality sinking pellets, micro-wafers, frozen or live bloodworm, tubifex and daphnia, and blanched vegetables. The critical care point is timing: P. malayana is strictly nocturnal and will go largely unfed if food is offered only during the day. A small ration of sinking food dropped at lights-out, or in the period of dim transitional lighting before the tank goes dark, ensures the loach actually eats. Its retiring habits mean it is easy to assume it is feeding when it is not.

Mating

Sexual dimorphism in Pangio malayana is minimal and difficult to read outside of spawning condition. Ripe females are noticeably plumper when gravid, and this remains the most reliable field distinction; no consistent external skeletal or colour differences have been documented. In common with most Pangio, sexing is therefore impractical except in mature fish under good conditions.

In the wild, kuhli loaches are thought to spawn in association with seasonal water-level fluctuations tied to monsoon cycles, likely moving into shallow, heavily vegetated margins of streams and flooded areas where floating plant roots provide attachment sites for their adhesive eggs. The precise courtship behaviour of P. malayana has not been described in detail, and conditioning observations in aquarium settings are sparse. Males in some Pangio are reported to patrol loose territorial patches of sand, but detailed behavioural data for this species are limited.

Breeding

Pangio malayana is very rarely bred in home aquaria, and aquarium-produced specimens are not available in any consistent quantity. Where spawnings have been reported for Pangio kuhli-type loaches — closely related to P. malayana in biology — the eggs are small, adhesive, and greenish, scattered among the roots of floating plants such as water sprite or java moss draped at the surface; no parental care follows, and the adults ignore or may consume the eggs. Fry are tiny and require infusoria or similar microscopic first foods.

The conditions that appear to encourage spawning attempts include a mature, well-planted tank, a small group of adults in excellent condition, and some simulation of the seasonal cues that govern wild reproduction — a partial water change with slightly cooler, softer water, mimicking rain and the rise of the flood season. Even with attention to these conditions, successful raises are rarely reported and appear to depend partly on chance. The Malayan kuhli loach in the trade is largely wild-collected; there is no known large-scale captive production of this species.

In the aquarium

Pangio malayana does best in a soft, heavily decorated aquarium of at least 23.5 in in length, with a deep layer of fine smooth sand as the substrate — this is not optional. Sharp gravel or coarse substrate abrades the delicate ventral surface and prevents the natural burrowing behaviour that keeps the species unstressed. Dense planting, tangles of driftwood, and patches of leaf litter replicate the structural complexity of its wild habitat and encourage the fish to remain visible rather than permanently hiding. Low to moderate lighting and gentle filtration with minimal turbulence suit it well.

Pangio malayana is peaceful and poses no threat to any similarly sized or larger tank-mate. It is shy and retiring kept singly; a group of at least four to six individuals is strongly recommended, as the fish are more active, more visible, and more natural-looking in company. Aggressive or boisterous tank-mates that compete for sinking food should be avoided, since this species is easily outcompeted at feeding time. Being near-scaleless, it is sensitive to copper-based treatments and should receive no more than half the standard dose of any chemical medication — yet it is frequently among the first fish in a tank to develop ich, so the keeper must watch it closely and treat carefully. Feed a small amount of sinking food just after lights-out every evening.

Conservation

Pangio malayana has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated (NE). No extinction-risk data or population trend information has been published for this species specifically, and its conservation status remains unquantified.

Its native range — the lowland and foothill freshwater streams of Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak — is under sustained pressure from forest clearance, conversion of riverine habitat to oil palm and plantation agriculture, and the resulting changes to hydrology, water quality, and substrate character. These are the dominant freshwater-biodiversity pressures across Sundaland, affecting the entire kuhli-loach guild. The aquarium trade draws on wild-caught individuals, and there is no documented captive-breeding supply. Without a formal IUCN assessment, the degree of impact from collection versus habitat loss cannot be separated, but the trajectory of forest-stream habitat in this region is a legitimate concern for small, range-restricted cobitids.
