Taxonomy & naming
Pangio oblonga was described by Achille Valenciennes in 1846, making it one of the older described members of a genus that was long sorted into a tangle of names. For most of the twentieth century the kuhli loaches were placed in Acanthophthalmus — meaning 'spine-eye', for the suborbital spine — and the species circulated in early aquarium literature as Acanthophthalmus oblongus. The genus was synonymised with Pangio by Maurice Kottelat and Tyson Roberts in 1986, a revision that the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) accepts; the valid combination is now Pangio oblonga, with the parentheses around Valenciennes's name indicating that the original description assigned it to a different genus.
Pangio belongs to the family Cobitidae, the 'true' loaches or spined loaches. Within Cobitidae the kuhli loaches form a distinctive assemblage of elongate, largely scaleless species distributed across Southeast Asia from Indochina through the Malay Peninsula and the Greater Sunda Islands. Several species in the group are visually similar and data on distribution boundaries remain patchy, so published records sometimes conflate closely related taxa. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name and combination used here.
Morphology
Pangio oblonga is a cylindrical, eel-like fish with a small, inferior mouth bearing three pairs of barbels and a body that tapers to a small, rounded tail fin. The colouration is uniformly dark — a deep brown to nearly black on the dorsal surface shading to a lighter, yellowish-cream along the belly — distinguishing it from the banded kuhli loaches such as Pangio kuhlii. Adults are reported to reach around 3–4 in in standard length, placing them at the smaller end of the kuhli loaches available in the trade.
The skin is almost entirely devoid of visible scales, giving the fish a smooth, silky feel. This near-scaleless condition, shared with other cobitids, means the fish absorbs dissolved chemicals and medications directly and is correspondingly sensitive to anything added to the water. Below each eye sits the characteristic bifid suborbital spine of the cobitids — a small but sharp erectile spike that can lock out defensively and will snag a net or nick skin; kuhli loaches are best moved in a container rather than a mesh net.
Habitat
Pangio oblonga is native to still and gently flowing lowland fresh waters across the Sundaland region: the Malay Peninsula (including southern Thailand and peninsular Malaysia), Sumatra, Borneo and Java. It inhabits small rivers, stream margins, swampy drainage channels, and the edges of forest streams where the water is warm, very soft and typically acidic, often darkened with tannins leaching from leaf litter and decaying wood. The substrate is fine sand or mud overlaid with a thick layer of fallen leaves and organic debris into which the fish burrows.
Flow is usually slow to negligible; this is not a hillstream fish requiring swift, oxygen-saturated current. Light levels are low under the forest canopy, and the fish is largely nocturnal, spending daylight hours concealed beneath leaves, wedged into woody tangles or buried in the substrate. Temperature in the lowland tropics of Sundaland is consistently warm, ranging roughly 75–82 °F through the year, and the water is largely free of dissolved minerals.
Feeding
Pangio oblonga is a micro-omnivore and sand-sifter. In the wild it forages through soft substrate and leaf litter after dark, picking out small invertebrates — insect larvae, tubifex-type worms, tiny crustaceans and other meiofauna — along with organic detritus. It does not surface to feed and will not compete for food with faster mid-water or surface-feeding tankmates.
In the aquarium the species is easily starved through neglect rather than any difficulty in feeding it. Sinking foods placed at or after lights-out work well: small sinking pellets, frozen and thawed bloodworm, tubifex and daphnia, and fine-grade sinking wafers will all be accepted once the fish learns to associate those foods with feeding time. Because kuhli loaches are retiring and easily out-competed, they should be fed in a tank where the other occupants are not sweeping the substrate clean before the loaches emerge. Variety in diet keeps condition up.
Mating
External dimorphism in Pangio oblonga is subtle. Gravid females are noticeably plumper in the body when in spawning condition, and their greenish ovaries may be faintly visible through the abdominal wall in very ripe individuals; males are slimmer and show no obvious secondary characters. Beyond this difference in body depth, the sexes are visually indistinct, which makes intentional pairing difficult.
No detailed account of courtship behaviour in Pangio oblonga specifically has been published. In kuhli loaches generally, spawning is believed to be triggered by environmental cues — a rise in temperature, an increase in water level or flow mimicking the onset of the monsoon season, or a drop in dissolved oxygen — and may involve chasing and close-bodied contact between fish before eggs are released. Reports of spawning in captivity are scattered and anecdotal.
Breeding
Pangio oblonga is very rarely bred in home aquaria. The species is believed to be an egg-scatterer: reports from the few documented captive spawnings describe the fish releasing small, greenish adhesive eggs among the roots of floating plants or clumps of fine-leaved vegetation near the surface, with no parental care of any kind following spawning. Eggs and larvae are left to fend for themselves and are easily lost to filtration or predation if not removed to a rearing vessel.
The trade supply of kuhli loaches is predominantly wild-collected rather than captive-bred, reflecting how rarely successful spawnings occur and how difficult the larvae are to raise. A keeper wishing to attempt breeding should condition a small group on varied live and frozen foods, maintain very soft, slightly acidic water at the upper end of the temperature range, and try simulating a mild 'wet season' trigger with water changes using slightly cooler, very soft water — but honest expectation is that spawning is the exception rather than the rule.
In the aquarium
The most important thing a keeper can provide for Pangio oblonga is a soft sand substrate. This species burrows and needs to dive headfirst into the bottom; coarse gravel, sharp chippings or any substrate that cannot be displaced damages the barbels and the soft skin and will prevent the fish from behaving naturally. Fine-grained, rounded silica sand of 0.5 in grade is ideal. A layer of dried Indian almond leaves or oak leaves over the sand adds tannins, staining the water lightly and giving the fish the dim, soft-bottomed environment it prefers. Additional cover — tangles of driftwood, clay tubes, dense planting — reduces stress.
Pangio oblonga is peaceful and poses no threat to other fish, but it is easily overlooked and easily underfed in a busy community tank. It does best in a quiet set-up with gentle filtration, low flow, and tankmates that do not compete for bottom-level sinking foods. Keeping it in a small group — a minimum of four to six individuals — reduces timidity and makes the fish more visible; kept singly it almost never emerges. Water quality must be high: soft, slightly acidic, warm water with good filtration but no strong current. Because the skin is near-scaleless, this species is sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many proprietary treatments; if disease treatment is necessary, half-doses using copper-free products are the safer starting point.
Conservation
Pangio oblonga has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated. No population-level data on abundance or trends has been published, which is typical for small, cryptic stream loaches across Sundaland — they are rarely targeted by surveys, difficult to census through conventional netting, and easily overlooked.
The broader freshwater ecosystems of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo and Java have experienced severe habitat loss over recent decades through lowland deforestation, conversion of riparian forest to oil palm and agriculture, peat drainage, and river modification. These pressures affect the soft, shaded, low-current streams and swampy drainage channels that kuhli loaches depend on, and there is no reason to assume Pangio oblonga is immune to them. The trade is largely supplied by wild-collected fish; collection pressure alone is unlikely to threaten a widespread species but interacts with habitat degradation. Until a formal assessment is carried out, the conservation status remains unknown.
