Pangio robiginosa is a slender, eel-like kuhli loach of the family Cobitidae, native to the soft, shaded forest streams of Southeast Asia. Like all Pangio, it is a nocturnal burrower with a near-scaleless body, spending its days wedged beneath driftwood or buried in fine sand and emerging after dark to sift the substrate for small invertebrates. It is assessed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, a status that reflects the narrow, declining freshwater habitats of Sundaland rather than any abundance in the trade. Small, peaceful and secretive, it is easily overlooked and easily underfed — a loach that rewards a patient keeper with a soft-substrate setup, cover, and food delivered after lights-out.

Taxonomy & naming

Pangio robiginosa was described by Raut in 1957, originally placed in the genus Acanthophthalmus — hence the parentheses around the authority. For decades the kuhli loaches were housed under Acanthophthalmus, a name derived from the Greek for "spine-eye" after the suborbital spine. In 1987 Maurice Kottelat revised the group, synonymizing Acanthophthalmus with the older name Pangio and simultaneously rejecting the synonym Apua; the valid genus has been Pangio since that revision, and the current combination Pangio robiginosa is confirmed by the Catalog of Fishes.

The species belongs to the family Cobitidae, the true loaches — the broader Cobitoidea that encompasses botiids, hillstream loaches, stone loaches and their allies has undergone repeated reshuffling as molecular work refined the group. Within Cobitidae, Pangio is a diverse Sundaland-centred genus of some 30-plus described species, most of them small, stripey or plain-bodied burrowers with a strong resemblance to one another. Some sources additionally record an older combination Acanthophthalmus robiginosa in the synonymy; any reference to that name applies to the same fish.

Morphology

Pangio robiginosa is a small, elongate loach with the characteristic eel-like silhouette of its genus — a rounded cross-section, blunt snout, and a body that tapers to a small, slightly rounded caudal fin. The skin is effectively bare: scales are tiny, deeply embedded and barely visible, making the fish feel smooth to the touch. Three pairs of sensory barbels fringe the mouth; the suborbital spine — a forked, erectile spine seated in a groove beneath the eye — is present as in all Cobitidae and can snag a net or nick a careless hand.

The common name "rusty kuhli loach" points to the body colouration: a warm brownish-orange to rust-tan ground with faint, darker mottling or banding that varies between individuals and may fade in poor conditions. Maximum reported size is modest, consistent with the broader Pangio genus — adults typically reach around 3 in in total length, though many individuals remain smaller. Colour and pattern are most vivid in well-conditioned fish kept in soft, tannin-stained water with dim lighting and a dark substrate.

Habitat

The natural range of Pangio robiginosa lies within the Sundaland freshwater bioregion of Southeast Asia — the mainland Malay Peninsula, the islands of Sumatra, Borneo, and Java, and associated smaller islands. This is the heartland of the Pangio genus, a landscape of lowland and foothill rivers, blackwater streams and peat-swamp channels characterized by soft, acidic, tannin-stained water over beds of fine sand, silt and leaf litter, with a dense canopy reducing light penetration.

The species is a demersal, freshwater-only fish of warm tropical waters. In its native streams it inhabits the bottom layer, burrowing into soft substrate and sheltering beneath leaf litter, submerged wood and root masses. Water chemistry in these environments tends to be soft and slightly to strongly acidic, with gentle to moderate current and consistently warm temperatures. The habitat is broadly similar across the Pangio genus: quiet, shaded, structurally complex forest-stream margins — the opposite of open, bright, fast-flowing water.

Feeding

Pangio robiginosa is a micro-omnivore and substrate sifter. In the wild it forages across and into the soft bottom after dark, picking out small invertebrates — worm fragments, insect larvae, small crustaceans and other benthic organisms — alongside organic detritus and any edible matter it uncovers while burrowing. It is not a surface or mid-water feeder and will ignore food that does not reach the bottom.

In the aquarium this translates to a straightforward but often-missed feeding requirement: sinking food, delivered at night. A keeper who feeds only at the top of the tank during daylight hours will steadily starve their kuhli loaches, which hide during the day and do not compete well with bolder mid-water species. Small sinking pellets, frozen or thawed bloodworm, tubifex and daphnia dropped in after lights-out are the practical approach. A varied diet that includes live or frozen invertebrates keeps condition up and encourages natural foraging behaviour across the substrate.

Mating

Sexual dimorphism in Pangio robiginosa is subtle and unreliable. As in most Pangio species, ripe females can appear slightly plumper and more rounded in the lower body when in spawning condition, but in lean or non-breeding fish the sexes are essentially indistinguishable by eye. This obscure dimorphism, combined with the species' nocturnal and secretive habits, makes identifying a male-female pair difficult in practice.

Spawning in the wild is presumed to follow the seasonal pattern documented in other Pangio: the arrival of the wet season, falling water temperatures, rising water levels and changes in water chemistry provide the cues that bring fish into breeding condition. Recreating the precise interaction of those seasonal signals in a home aquarium — particularly the cooler, oxygen-rich, plant-rich shallow-water environment that kuhli loaches reportedly prefer for spawning — is challenging, and the species is very rarely bred in captivity.

Breeding

Pangio robiginosa is very rarely bred in home aquaria. As a kuhli loach it is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: in the limited reports of captive spawning among Pangio species, greenish, slightly adhesive eggs are broadcast among fine-leaved floating plants or plant roots at the water surface, after which the adults show no further interest. The eggs are light-sensitive and hatch in a few days; fry are tiny and require infusoria or similar microfood.

For practical purposes, a keeper should not expect to breed this species without deliberate effort and favourable conditions — a well-planted, mature soft-water tank, a group of multiple individuals to allow natural pairing, a seasonal temperature-and-water-change trigger, and patience. The aquarium trade in Pangio robiginosa is largely supplied by wild-collected fish from Southeast Asia, not by captive breeding. Honest breeding notes for this species must acknowledge that it is seldom achieved, and that egg-scattering with no parental care is the mode when it does occur.

In the aquarium

Pangio robiginosa is a peaceful, social loach that does best in a group of six or more. Kept singly it is rarely seen — a shadow that appears for a moment at the glass after midnight before vanishing back under the driftwood. A group relaxes, ventures out more readily, and shows the looping, twisting social behaviour typical of Pangio. A densely planted aquarium with floating cover, a dark fine-sand substrate, driftwood and leaf litter is the ideal environment; the fish will spend their days buried or tucked into dark corners and emerge only after the lights go out.

Fine, soft sand is not optional: kuhli loaches burrow, and sharp gravel or coarse substrate damages the delicate barbels and the unprotected belly. This matters practically — a tank that looks fine for tetras or corydoras may be harmful for Pangio over the long term. Water should be warm (73–81 °F), soft, and slightly acidic, with gentle filtration that provides good oxygenation without strong flow.

The most important care note is medication sensitivity. Being near-scaleless, Pangio absorbs treatments through the skin far more readily than scaled fish and is easily overdosed. Copper-based treatments, organophosphates and many proprietary ich remedies must be used at half-dose or less — ideally replaced with safer alternatives such as heat treatment for ich. Feed after lights-out with sinking foods, verify that the loaches are actually eating, and maintain pristine water quality; this species is easily overlooked and easily neglected in a busy community tank, which is the primary reason for losses in the hobby.

Conservation

Pangio robiginosa is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with a 2019 assessment under criterion B1ab(iii) — a restricted area of occupancy with continuing decline in the quality of its freshwater habitat. This status places it among the more threatened members of the Pangio genus, though the IUCN criterion reflects the broader deterioration of lowland forest streams and peat-swamp habitats across Sundaland rather than evidence of a specific population collapse driven by the aquarium trade.

The pressures on its native habitat are severe and well-documented: deforestation, drainage and conversion of peat swamp forests, agricultural runoff, and river modification across the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo have reduced and degraded the soft-water, shaded stream environments that Pangio require. For a species with a restricted range, an affinity for intact forest-stream habitat and a small body size that limits dispersal, these trends represent a genuine long-term threat. The wild-collection trade adds pressure on wild populations, though the scale relative to habitat loss is unclear. Keepers who source this species from reputable suppliers using responsibly collected stock contribute modestly to keeping the trade sustainable; aquarium breeding, though rare, would further relieve pressure on wild populations.
