Pangio semicincta, the half-banded kuhli loach, is a slender, eel-like burrower from the tannin-stained blackwater streams and swamps of Sundaland — the Malay Peninsula, Borneo and Sumatra — where it threads through leaf litter and roots under cover of darkness. It reaches around 4 in in standard length, wears a pattern of dark saddles that do not quite wrap the pale belly (hence the name semicincta, 'half-banded'), and has been a fixture of the aquarium trade for generations, sold alongside and often confused with its closest relatives. A peaceful, soft-skinned, scaleless fish, it needs fine sand to burrow into, a well-established tank with abundant cover, and the company of its own kind; kept singly in a bare, bright aquarium it wastes away unseen. Like all kuhli loaches it is rarely bred in captivity — the greenish, adhesive eggs it scatters among floating plant roots are seldom seen in a home tank — and most fish in the trade are wild-collected.

Taxonomy & naming

Pangio semicincta was described by Alec Fraser-Brunner in 1940, originally placed in the genus Acanthophthalmus — the 'thorn-eye' genus, named for the defensive suborbital spine visible below each eye. For decades the kuhli complex was sold and catalogued under that name, so any older reference to Acanthophthalmus semicinctus refers to this fish. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) now places it in Pangio, the current valid genus for the kuhli loaches within the family Cobitidae, and the authority combination is accordingly parenthesised to show the original genus has changed.

The species epithet semicincta is Latin for 'half-girded' or 'half-banded', describing the diagnostic feature that separates it from the superficially similar Pangio kuhlii: the dark transverse bands reach down the flanks but do not fully encircle the pale belly, leaving the underside largely unpigmented. This incomplete banding can be difficult to see in a dimly lit tank, and the two species are frequently mixed in trade shipments and sold interchangeably. Pangio semicincta is the more consistently smaller and more slender of the two, and its banding, when the fish is resting on a pale substrate, is clearly incomplete ventrally.

The genus Pangio belongs to the family Cobitidae, one of the two core cobitoid families alongside Botiidae. Kuhli loaches were long classified in Acanthophthalmus; the transfer to Pangio reflects a broader taxonomic reorganisation of the cobitoid families that has stabilised since the early 2000s.

Morphology

Pangio semicincta is a distinctively elongate, laterally compressed loach with a body that tapers towards both ends, giving it an eel-like silhouette that it uses to slip between plant stems and through narrow gaps in roots and substrate. Adults typically reach 3–4 in in standard length, with females somewhat larger and more robust-bodied than males in condition. The fins are small and set far back, and the tail is rounded.

The ground colour is pale yellowish to cream, crossed by 10–15 dark brown to blackish saddles on the dorsal surface that extend partway down the flanks but stop before reaching the belly — the 'half-banding' that names the species. The belly and lower flanks remain pale, distinguishing it from Pangio kuhlii where the bands reach further around. Around the snout are three pairs of short barbels used to probe the substrate for food.

Like all kuhli loaches, Pangio semicincta carries a small but sharp bifid suborbital spine beneath each eye — a defensive structure shared across Cobitidae that can snag nets and inflict minor cuts. The body surface is nearly scaleless; the skin is smooth to the touch and the embedded scales are tiny and deeply set. This near-scalelessness is a defining care consideration: the fish absorbs medications directly through the skin and is correspondingly sensitive to chemical treatments.

Habitat

In the wild, Pangio semicincta inhabits calm, shallow, tannin-stained blackwater forest streams, swamps and oxbow lakes across the Malay Peninsula, Borneo and Sumatra. The water is typically soft, low in dissolved minerals, warm and distinctly acidic — pH values of 6.0 or below are not unusual in the peat-influenced blackwater streams of Sundaland — and heavily shaded by overhanging riparian forest. The substrate is fine sand or soft mud overlaid with fallen leaves, root masses and submerged wood that provide the cover under which the fish shelters by day.

Flow is gentle to negligible; this is not a fast-water hillstream fish. The tannins and organic acids leaching from the leaf litter maintain the low pH and very soft water conditions characteristic of the habitat. Current is minimal, oxygen levels are moderate, and the fish spends the daylight hours hidden under leaf packs, in root tangles or buried shallowly in the substrate.

The species is strictly a lowland freshwater fish of tropical Sundaland. It does not occur in brackish or marine environments, and it is not a coldwater fish — the streams it inhabits are warm year-round, with little seasonal temperature variation.

Feeding

Pangio semicincta is a micro-omnivore and substrate-sifter that feeds primarily at night. In the wild it forages through leaf litter, fine sand and detritus after dark, extracting small invertebrates — midge and mosquito larvae, small worms, microcrustaceans and similar soft-bodied prey — along with organic detritus. Its three pairs of barbels around the snout are sensory organs well adapted to locating food by touch and smell in the low-light conditions of a shaded forest stream.

In the aquarium it accepts a range of sinking foods: small sinking pellets, wafers, thawed frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and mysis shrimp are all taken readily. Being nocturnal, it often goes unseen at feeding time and is one of the most commonly underfed aquarium fish. The keeper should add sinking food after lights-out rather than during the daytime feeding window, and verify that the loaches are actually reaching the food before tankmates consume it all. In a heavily planted or decorated tank with surface-feeding community fish, a kuhli loach can be present for months without receiving meaningful nutrition.

Mating

Sexual dimorphism in Pangio semicincta is subtle and not always reliable. Females in breeding condition are notably more round-bodied and heavy-bellied than males, and in some accounts the pectoral fins of males are described as slightly broader or more muscular — a difference that is all but invisible in a moving fish or outside of spawning season. Determining the sex of individual fish with confidence is difficult, which is part of why deliberate pairing is rarely attempted.

Very little is known about mating cues and courtship in this species under aquarium conditions. Where spawning has been observed or inferred, it appears to be associated with water-quality and temperature manipulation — simulating a rainy-season influx of cooler, softer water — and with the presence of fine-leaved floating plants whose root masses the fish use as a spawning substrate. The courtship itself, if it follows the pattern reported in closely related kuhli loach species, involves the male chasing or entwining with the female near the surface among floating plant roots.

Breeding

Pangio semicincta is very rarely bred in home aquaria. It is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: where spawning has been reported, the fish scatter small, greenish, adhesive eggs among the roots of floating plants — Java moss or fine-leaved surface vegetation — and take no further interest in the clutch. The eggs and newly hatched fry are tiny and easily missed or eaten by tankmates. There is no nest, no guarding behaviour and no pair bond; the adults should ideally be removed after spawning.

The great majority of fish in the aquarium trade are wild-collected, not captive-bred. Reliably triggering spawning requires mature, well-conditioned fish, soft and acidic water, and typically a simulated rainy-season trigger — a period of slightly cooler water followed by large water changes with very soft, acidic water, combined with the presence of appropriate floating plant cover. Even with these conditions met, documented successes are uncommon and not easily repeatable. A keeper should not expect to breed kuhli loaches as a matter of course, and should enjoy them for what they are rather than for reproductive potential.

In the aquarium

Pangio semicincta is a rewarding fish to keep once its three non-negotiable requirements are understood. First, it must have fine, soft sand as its substrate. Kuhli loaches burrow routinely — retreating beneath the surface during the day and moving through the upper sand layer at night — and sharp gravel or coarse substrate will damage the barbels, abrade the near-scaleless skin and prevent the natural burrowing behaviour that keeps the fish settled and secure. Play sand or similar fine-grade aquarium sand is the correct choice.

Second, it needs the company of its own kind. Pangio semicincta is a social species; a single fish in a large tank becomes timid and is rarely seen. A group of six or more produces a genuinely interactive group that moves together at night, emerges at feeding time and piles into a shared retreat during the day — a normal and healthy kuhli-loach behaviour that looks alarming to new keepers but is simply social resting. A minimum of three is sometimes quoted, but six is a more satisfying number for the keeper and a more natural group for the fish.

Third, medication must be handled carefully. The near-scaleless skin absorbs chemical treatments directly, making this species sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many standard aquarium remedies. It is also, paradoxically, one of the first fish in a community tank to show signs of ich — the white-spot parasite finds the exposed skin readily. When treatment is needed, use copper-free medications and reduce doses to half the standard rate, watching closely for signs of stress. Beyond these points, the species adapts well to a mature, planted community tank with warm, soft, slightly acidic water, gentle filtration and subdued lighting, and will be a long-lived and characterful resident.

Conservation

Pangio semicincta is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2019), reflecting its wide distribution across the Malay Peninsula, Borneo and Sumatra and the absence of evidence for a range-wide population decline. It is a broadly distributed species within Sundaland, occupying a range of still and slow-moving lowland freshwater habitats, and it tolerates a degree of habitat modification provided water quality and soft substrate remain available.

The species is collected for the aquarium trade, and most fish in the hobby are wild-caught rather than captive-bred. At present the volume of collection is not considered a threat at the population level, but the long-term picture is tied to the fate of Sundaland's freshwater ecosystems more broadly. Deforestation, conversion of peat swamp forest, agricultural drainage and the alteration of stream hydrology across Borneo, Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula represent the principal pressures on the blackwater stream habitats that kuhli loaches depend on. These are diffuse, landscape-scale processes rather than species-specific threats, but they are relevant to the outlook of the species and to the wider community of lowland freshwater fish that share its range.
