Pangio shelfordii, the Leopard Kuhli Loach, is a slender, eel-like Cobitid of Sundaland — a secretive burrower from the soft-bottomed, tannin-stained forest streams of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo. Where its more familiar cousin Pangio kuhlii wears bold orange-and-black stripes, shelfordii trades the bands for a mottled leopard pattern: brown saddles and blotches on a pinkish or pale-tan ground, with a striking vertical dark bar at the tail base. It reaches roughly 3 in, remains shy and near-scaleless throughout its life, and is almost never bred in the aquarium; the fish in the trade are wild-collected from Sundaland's still-threatened lowland forest waterways.

Taxonomy & naming

Pangio shelfordii was formally described by the Dutch zoologist Cora Anna Popta in 1903, based on material from the Sarawak River near Kuching in what is now the Malaysian state of Sarawak, Borneo. The parentheses around Popta's name signal that the species was not placed in Pangio by its author: for much of the twentieth century it was assigned to Acanthophthalmus, the genus that once held all of the eel-like Southeast Asian loaches. The Catalog of Fishes and contemporary ichthyological practice now place it in Pangio (Bleeker, 1860), family Cobitidae, alongside Pangio kuhlii and the other kuhli loaches of Sundaland and the Malay Archipelago.

The common names circulating in the trade — Leopard Kuhli Loach, Calico Kuhli Loach, Shelford's Loach, Borneo Loach — all refer to the same fish, and the epithet shelfordii honours Robert Walter Campbell Shelford, the British naturalist who collected extensively in Sarawak in the early 1900s. Older literature and retailer lists may still carry the combination Acanthophthalmus shelfordii; GBIF lists both forms under the same taxon record.

Morphology

Pangio shelfordii is a quintessential kuhli: elongate and cylindrical, with a blunt head, small subterminal mouth, and a body that tapers to a laterally compressed tail. Adults reach around 3 in standard length (roughly 3 in total length) — modest even by kuhli standards — and retain the near-scaleless skin characteristic of the genus, with tiny, deeply embedded scales that leave the body feeling smooth and almost naked.

The colour pattern is the quickest identifier: a pale pinkish or tan background carries irregular brown saddles and blotches along the dorsal midline, giving the leopard or calico effect for which the fish is named, and a bold vertical dark bar sits at the base of the tail. The fins are mottled tan rather than clear. Like other Pangio and Cobitidae generally, it carries a small erectile suborbital spine beneath each eye — barely visible unless flicked out — which can snag a net and cause minor injury to an unwary hand. This near-scaleless, thin-skinned build is as significant for the keeper as it is for taxonomy: medications and dissolved copper penetrate the body with unusual ease.

Habitat

In the wild, Pangio shelfordii inhabits shallow, slow-moving to virtually still forest streams, peat swamps and oxbow lakes across its Sundaland range, from Terengganu, Pahang and Johor on the Malay Peninsula south through Singapore, into Sumatra (Riau, Jambi, Bangka Island) and across Borneo (Sarawak, Kalimantan Barat and Kalimantan Timur). The type locality is the Sarawak River near Kuching. FishBase also records it from the Kapuas and Mahakam basins, two of Borneo's great river systems.

The water these fish live in is characteristically soft, acidic and dark with dissolved tannins and humic acids leached from leaf litter and peat — pH values of 4.0 to 7.0 are recorded, temperatures roughly 70–79 °F. The bottom is typically fine mud or sand overlain with a deep layer of decomposing leaves, providing both the soft substrate the fish digs into and the invertebrate life it hunts. Current is minimal to absent in most habitats; unlike hillstream loaches, kuhlis are fish of still or gently flowing waters.

FishBase notes an ability to breathe air facultatively — an adaptation common in loaches that share shallow, periodically deoxygenated tropical habitats.

Feeding

Pangio shelfordii is a micropredator and opportunistic sand-sifter. In the wild it forages nocturnally over and through the soft substrate, hunting insect larvae, small crustaceans and other tiny invertebrates hidden in leaf litter and mud. Its subterminal mouth and elongate body suit this mode of feeding: it works close to or partially through the bottom rather than picking food from the water column.

In the aquarium it accepts sinking foods — small sinking pellets, wafers and granules — as well as live or frozen Daphnia, Artemia, bloodworm (Chironomid larvae), Tubifex and similar items. As with most kuhlis, underfed fish are a common keeper failure: because this is a shy, nocturnal species that stays hidden during the day, it can easily go unnoticed at feeding time while more assertive tankmates consume everything. The reliable solution is to drop sinking food after lights-out, when shelfordii and its companions emerge to forage. A varied diet of invertebrate foods alongside a quality sinking staple keeps these fish in best condition.

Mating

Sexual dimorphism in Pangio shelfordii is subtle at best. As in other kuhli loaches, ripe females are reported to become noticeably plumper in the belly when in condition — the body cavity filled with eggs gives a rounded cross-section compared with the more uniformly cylindrical male — but outside of spawning condition the two sexes are very similar in appearance and are difficult to distinguish reliably in the aquarium.

Nothing is recorded about courtship or mating behaviour in this species specifically. By analogy with other Pangio kuhlis and the broader pattern in the group, any spawning activity in nature or in the aquarium would likely involve chasing and tumbling behaviour near the water surface or among floating plant roots, following changes in water conditions or daylength that trigger reproductive readiness. In practice, most keepers never witness any such behaviour because the fish are nocturnal and rarely observed actively during the hours they are most active.

Breeding

Pangio shelfordii is essentially unrecorded as a breeding subject in the aquarium. SeriouslyFish lists breeding as "unrecorded in aquaria," and this is the honest starting point: it is a fish kept for its appearance and behaviour, not for propagation. By analogy with the better-known Pangio kuhlii, spawning in kuhlis when it does occur reportedly involves the fish scattering small, greenish, adhesive eggs among the roots of floating plants near the water surface, with no parental care whatsoever once the eggs are deposited.

The trigger, where any home spawning has been noted, appears to be a change in water conditions simulating seasonal rain — a drop in temperature, increase in water volume or reduction in hardness mimicking the onset of monsoon. Even with deliberate effort to replicate these conditions, success is rare and unreliable. The Leopard Kuhli Loach available in the trade is wild-collected from its native Sundaland range, not captive-bred. Keepers acquiring this species should do so expecting to maintain it, not to breed it.

In the aquarium

Pangio shelfordii is a rewarding community fish for a soft-water, planted or leaf-littered aquarium, but several of its biological requirements are easy to miss. First and most important is substrate: it must have fine, soft sand — not gravel, not coarse substrate — to burrow into. This is not optional comfort but a genuine need; on hard or sharp substrate the fish cannot dig, rests on the surface or on decor it was not designed to rest on, and can abrade its scaleless skin. A deep layer of fine sand with scattered dried leaves mimics its natural habitat most closely.

This is a social species. Keeping a single specimen produces a fish that hides permanently and is rarely seen; a group of five or six allows the normal shuffling, stacking and occasional exploratory forays that make kuhlis interesting. A planted tank of at least 15 US gal with subdued lighting, dense cover and a soft water chemistry (pH 4.0–7.0, temperature 70–79 °F, soft and ideally slightly acidic) suits it well. Because the fish are scaleless and thin-skinned, they absorb copper and standard aquarium medications far more readily than scaled fish, and full-strength doses of many treatments can be lethal. Half-doses and copper-free medications are the rule whenever disease treatment is needed — and because kuhlis are often among the first fish in a tank to show ich, their care and the caution around treatment are closely linked. Feed sinking foods at night, after lights-out, to ensure the fish receive their share before bold daytime tankmates consume everything.

Compatible tankmates are small, peaceful fish that share the same warm, soft-water requirements: small tetras, rasboras, otocinclus, dwarf corydoras and similar species. Avoid large or predatory fish that will consume kuhli loaches, and avoid any species whose care requirements conflict with the soft, warm, acidic water this species needs.

Conservation

Pangio shelfordii is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2019 assessment), reflecting a range that spans several countries across the Malay Peninsula and Sundaland — Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra and Borneo — and that includes protected and relatively undisturbed forest watercourses alongside more degraded habitats. Its tolerance of peat-swamp conditions, which are poorly suited to most aquaculture and land uses, may offer some degree of incidental protection.

Nonetheless, the long-term trends that threaten most of Sundaland's freshwater fauna apply here too. Peat swamp drainage, deforestation, agriculture conversion, and the rapid development of the lowland landscapes of Sumatra and Borneo have reduced and fragmented the soft-bottomed, shaded streams and swamps this species inhabits. Singapore, which forms part of its type-locality range, has lost the vast majority of its original freshwater habitats. The aquarium trade relies on wild-collected fish; no captive-breeding supply exists at any meaningful scale. Although there is no documented population collapse, the pressures on its habitat remain real, and populations in the most heavily modified parts of its range are likely to have declined.
