Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa dongganensis was described by Yang in 2013, one of a wave of eyeless Triplophysa species named from the karst caves of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China over the last two decades. The genus Triplophysa is placed in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — the largest of the loach families — though older literature on Chinese cave loaches sometimes filed these fish under the now-obsolete family name Balitoridae; the Catalog of Fishes governs the current placement and this article follows it.
The species epithet references Dongsheng or a similarly named karst locality in Guangxi (the precise etymology of "dongganensis" is not confirmed in the sources at hand, and is best read simply as a place-name derivation typical of these narrowly endemic cave fish). It is one of several closely related congeners named from the same limestone belt, including T. anshuiensis and T. macrocephala, all sharing the eyeless, depigmented cave-adapted body plan that has evolved repeatedly within this genus.
Morphology
This is a small, elongate stone loach reaching a maximum of about 4 in standard length. Like its cave-dwelling relatives, it shows the classic troglobitic (obligate cave-dweller) suite of adaptations: functional eyes are absent or vestigial, and pigmentation is reduced, leaving the body pale. In place of vision, cave Triplophysa rely on an enhanced lateral line and dense fields of cutaneous sensory papillae to navigate and find food in total darkness.
As a nemacheilid it carries the family's slender, near-cylindrical body, small paired fins and a subterminal, downturned mouth suited to picking food from rock and sediment surfaces. The skin is thin and largely scaleless in the way typical of small loaches, a point that matters for any handling or medication, though in practice this species is not held in captivity.
Habitat
Triplophysa dongganensis is endemic to karst cave systems in Guangxi, China, known from a tight cluster of coordinates roughly between 25°N and 26°N and 107°E to 108°E. It lives in subterranean cave streams and groundwater pools within limestone caverns — permanently dark, cool, clear, fast-flowing water with no light penetration and, being flowing groundwater, typically well oxygenated.
Cave streams like this tend to be thermally stable year-round, buffered from surface temperature swings by the surrounding rock, though exact temperature and pH figures for this species have not been published in the sources reviewed here. What is certain is that this is a specialist of a single, fragile underground habitat type, not a surface stream or pond fish, and its entire known range appears to be confined to one karst system in Guangxi.
Feeding
FishBase records a trophic level of about 3.1 for this species, consistent with a micro-predatory to omnivorous diet — small invertebrates and insect larvae taken from the substrate of its cave stream, likely supplemented by whatever organic material washes into the cave system from above. Cave ecosystems are generally food-poor, so cave loaches like this one are presumed to be opportunistic, energy-conserving feeders rather than active hunters.
No aquarium feeding data exists for this species. By analogy with other small benthic Triplophysa it would be expected to take small live or frozen invertebrate foods and sinking foods off the bottom, but this is inference from the genus rather than a documented fact for T. dongganensis itself.
Mating
Direct data on courtship in T. dongganensis has not been located. In the closely related cave species T. anshuiensis, also a blind Guangxi loach from the Xijiang River system, males develop breeding tubercles on the head and pectoral fins and become territorial around a breeding season in late spring to early summer, when cave water presumably warms slightly. It is reasonable to expect a broadly similar pattern in T. dongganensis given the shared genus, habitat and geography, but this should be read as an informed inference from a relative, not a confirmed observation of this species.
Breeding
As a stone and brook loach, Triplophysa dongganensis is presumed to be an egg-scatterer, releasing eggs over gravel or cave-stream substrate in current with no parental care — the pattern typical of Nemacheilidae generally and reported for its close relative T. anshuiensis. There is no record of this species being bred, or even held, in the aquarium hobby.
Given its extreme habitat specialization — permanent darkness, cool stable subterranean water, and a food-poor cave ecosystem — reproducing the conditions needed to spawn it in captivity would be exceptionally difficult even if live specimens were available. Data on this species is genuinely sparse, and any breeding account beyond that of its congeners would be speculation rather than fact.
In the aquarium
Triplophysa dongganensis is not a hobby fish. It has not been recorded in the aquarium trade, and nothing in the sources reviewed here suggests it is collected, exported or kept by aquarists. As a troglobite adapted to permanent darkness and stable cool cave water, it would in any case be an exceptionally poor candidate for typical aquarium conditions, which involve light, temperature swings and food regimes wholly unlike its cave-stream home.
The honest statement for this species is that it belongs in the category of scientifically described but functionally unavailable fish — of interest to ichthyologists studying cave adaptation and to conservationists tracking Guangxi's karst biodiversity, but not a fish that can currently be recommended, sourced or cared for by hobbyists.
Conservation
Triplophysa dongganensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. Its known distribution is confined to a single karst cave system in Guangxi, China, which by itself is a red flag: species restricted to one cave are inherently vulnerable to any disturbance of that specific groundwater system, from quarrying and cave tourism to pollution and changes in the surrounding watershed.
As with many of the roughly dozen eyeless Triplophysa cave endemics described from Guangxi in recent years, the absence of a Red List assessment likely reflects how recently the species was described (2013) and how little survey effort karst cave systems generally receive, rather than any evidence that the population is secure. There is no indication of aquarium-trade pressure on this species; its conservation concerns, where they exist, are tied entirely to its subterranean habitat rather than to collection.
