Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa fengshanensis was described by Lan in 2013, with its name referencing Fengshan County in Guangxi, China, the type locality. It sits in the genus Triplophysa within the family Nemacheilidae, the true stone loaches — the largest and most diverse loach family, spread across Central, South and East Asia. Its validity is confirmed in the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) taxonomic database and in Wikispecies, and it is catalogued on FishBase.
Triplophysa is a genus that has absorbed many species once placed under the older, now largely obsolete genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus, and it includes a substantial number of cave- and spring-adapted species described from the karst regions of southern China over the past few decades. T. fengshanensis is one of these recent, narrowly-distributed cave-stream descriptions rather than a widely known or long-established name.
Morphology
This is a small loach: FishBase records a maximum standard length of about 3 in, well within the modest size range typical of Nemacheilidae. The original description notes lips with shallow furrows and a dorsal-fin origin set opposite the pelvic-fin origin — fine anatomical details used to separate it from closely related Triplophysa species in the same karst region.
Like many cave-adapted Triplophysa, the specialist Cave Fishes UK database records this species as troglomorphic — showing the reduced pigmentation and other adaptations typical of fish that live permanently without light. Beyond these points the published morphological detail is sparse; no comprehensive description of colouration, fin counts or other diagnostic features beyond the type description is available in the sources consulted here.
Habitat
Triplophysa fengshanensis is known only from Guangxi, China, in the band of karst terrain roughly between 24°N and 25°N and 106°E to 108°E — the limestone cave country of southern China that has yielded a great many narrowly endemic Triplophysa in recent decades. FishBase describes it as a freshwater, benthopelagic cave-inhabitant of the subtropical zone, and the Cave Fishes UK database lists it specifically as a cave-stream species.
Cave streams in this karst belt typically run stagnant to slow rather than fast and turbulent, with moderate rather than high dissolved oxygen, in complete or near-complete darkness. This is a genuinely different habitat template from the clear, fast, oxygen-rich open streams that many stone and brook loaches occupy — no temperature or pH data for this species' water has been published in the sources reviewed, and none is asserted here.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Triplophysa fengshanensis an estimated trophic level of about 3.1, consistent with a secondary consumer that feeds on small benthic invertebrates and organic material rather than on other fish. This fits the general Nemacheilidae pattern of a benthic micro-predator working the stream floor for food, though in this species' case that floor is a cave-stream substrate rather than open gravel.
No direct observations of its diet or feeding behaviour have been published; the trophic-level estimate is a modelled figure rather than a field study, so specific prey items and foraging habits should be treated as unconfirmed.
Mating
No published account of courtship, spawning triggers or sexual dimorphism exists for Triplophysa fengshanensis in the sources available. As a small, obligate cave-dweller from a subtropical karst system, any prospective care would need to replicate low light, moderate rather than fast flow, and modest oxygen levels rather than the bright, high-flow setups typical for open-stream Triplophysa — but this is inference from its habitat, not a tested aquarium record, and it is not a species to source or keep casually.
As with all Nemacheilidae, it is reasonable to assume the same near-scaleless skin and general medication sensitivity that runs through the loach group, though this has not been specifically documented for this species. Given its restricted, cave-only range, there is no ethical basis for collecting or trading this fish for the hobby.
Conservation
Triplophysa fengshanensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category here — it is recorded as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status.
