Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa lihuensis was formally described by Wu, Yang & Lan in 2012 from specimens collected in a cave near Renguang Village, Lihu Town, Nandan County, Guangxi, China — the source of its species epithet. It was originally placed in the family Balitoridae, the older, broader grouping once used for many hillstream and stone loaches; subsequent revision of the superfamily Cobitoidea has moved it, along with the rest of Triplophysa, into the family Nemacheilidae, the true stone and brook loaches, which is now the accepted classification.
The genus Triplophysa is one of the largest in the loach world, with well over 150 recognized species concentrated on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and in the karst cave systems of southern China. Several sister species from similar limestone regions are likewise blind and cave-restricted, suggesting T. lihuensis is part of a broader pattern of independent cave colonization within the genus rather than an isolated case.
Morphology
This is a small loach, reaching only about 2.5 in in standard length. Its defining feature is the complete absence of functional eyes — a classic case of regressive evolution seen repeatedly in cave-adapted Triplophysa, where eyes are of no use in permanent darkness and are lost over generations in favor of other senses. Like other members of the genus it is an elongate, cylindrical, near-scaleless loach built for moving over rock and sediment rather than through open water.
Detailed morphological description beyond the original species account is limited; the original description was based on a small series of holotype and paratype specimens taken from the type cave. Males in the genus Triplophysa typically develop breeding tubercles when reproductively mature, a pattern reported for the species, though a full account of external sexual dimorphism in T. lihuensis has not been documented.
Habitat
Triplophysa lihuensis is known only from a cave system near Lihu Town in Nandan County, Guangxi, in the karst limestone country of southern China. As an obligate cave fish it lives permanently underground, in the dark, oxygen-bearing groundwater and subterranean streams typical of this region's extensive limestone cave networks — habitat that is cool, clear and stable in temperature and chemistry compared to surface streams.
Guangxi's karst landscape hosts numerous blind, cave-restricted fish species, many known from a single cave or a small cluster of connected systems, and T. lihuensis fits that pattern. Because it has only been documented from its type locality, its habitat requirements and any wider distribution within the cave network are not well characterized in the available literature.
Feeding
Data on the diet of Triplophysa lihuensis specifically has not been published in detail, but its estimated trophic level (around 3.1) places it as a low-level micro-predator, consistent with other stone loaches that forage over the substrate for small invertebrates. Cave-dwelling fish of this kind typically feed on whatever organic material and small invertebrate life reaches them in the water column or settles on the cave floor — a food supply that is sparser and less predictable than in a sunlit surface stream.
Nothing has been recorded about its feeding behavior or preferences in captivity, since the species is not established in the aquarium trade. Related surface-dwelling Triplophysa, such as the Tibetan stone loach T. stolickai, are known to take sinking foods readily in captivity, which may offer a loose guide, but this should not be taken as established fact for T. lihuensis itself.
Mating
No specific account of courtship or spawning behavior in Triplophysa lihuensis has been published. Within the genus, males are reported to develop breeding tubercles as a sign of reproductive readiness, and related surface Triplophysa species are egg-scatterers that pair or group-spawn over gravel in flowing water. Whether — or how — this pattern carries over to a permanently dark, cave-dwelling species with no light cues to synchronize reproduction is simply not documented.
Breeding
This species has never been bred in the aquarium, and there is no published account of its reproductive biology in the wild beyond its placement in a genus of egg-scattering stone loaches. The reasonable expectation, based on its relatives, is an egg-scatterer that broadcasts eggs over gravel or rock in flowing water with no parental care — but this is inference from the genus, not a documented observation for T. lihuensis. Data on this species is genuinely sparse, and it should not be assumed to breed readily, or at all, outside its native cave.
In the aquarium
Triplophysa lihuensis is not established in the aquarium hobby and is not a fish a keeper is likely to encounter for sale; it appears to be effectively unknown in trade, and the honest position is that this profile cannot recommend husbandry parameters from direct experience with the species. Cave-adapted blind loaches in general are considered delicate and highly specialized, adapted to stable, cool, clean, well-oxygenated water quite unlike an average community tank, and are far better appreciated as a case study in cave adaptation than pursued as an aquarium subject.
As with all near-scaleless loaches, any specimen that did enter captivity would be expected to be sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications, warranting the same cautious, reduced-dose approach used for its stone-loach relatives. Given the total absence of hobby data, this species is best regarded as a scientific curiosity rather than an aquarium fish.
Conservation
Triplophysa lihuensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category here; we record it as Not Evaluated rather than guess. As a species known only from a single cave system in Guangxi, it fits the profile of many Chinese cave loaches — narrow-range endemics that are inherently vulnerable to any disturbance of their specific water source, including groundwater pollution, cave tourism development, or extraction, even though no formal assessment has quantified the risk.
There is no evidence of an aquarium trade in this species, so collection pressure is not a documented concern; any conservation risk would stem from habitat-level threats to its single known cave rather than from the ornamental fish trade.
