Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa moquensis was described by the Chinese ichthyologist Ding in 1994. It sits in the genus Triplophysa, part of the family Nemacheilidae (stone or brook loaches) within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. Nemacheilidae is the largest of the loach families, with roughly 790 recognized species, the great majority of them Eurasian; Triplophysa itself is centered on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and adjacent highlands of Central and East Asia, where dozens of narrow-range species have been described from individual lakes, springs and stream systems.
Older literature on this genus sometimes used Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus as a catch-all name before the group was split into the modern genera — Triplophysa, Schistura, Barbatula and others — so historical references to a "Nemacheilus" from the same region may refer to what is now placed in Triplophysa. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the current combination, Triplophysa moquensis, and that is the name used here.
Morphology
No detailed morphological description of Triplophysa moquensis is available in the English-language sources consulted for this profile; the original 1994 description by Ding, published in Chinese, would hold the diagnostic measurements, fin-ray counts and colour pattern, but that paper was not accessible here. What can be said comes from the genus: Triplophysa species are elongate, cylindrical stone loaches, generally small, with reduced or embedded scales rather than the fully naked skin of some other loach groups, and — in many but not all species — a pair of small barbels around the mouth used to feel out prey on the streambed.
Given the family, it is reasonable to expect this species to carry the erectile suborbital spine that helps define the wider loach superfamily Cobitoidea, though this has not been separately confirmed for T. moquensis in the sources reviewed. Triplophysa as a genus are coldwater fish, typical of the fast, clear, well-oxygenated streams and lakes of high plateau country. This is not a warm lowland or blackwater environment; it is cool, often glacially or snowmelt-fed water running over gravel and stone. Nothing in the available sources suggests T. moquensis departs from that pattern, and this profile treats it as a coldwater stone loach unless better information emerges.
Feeding
