Taxonomy & naming
Vaillantella cinnamomea was described by the Swiss-French ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 1994 in the Japanese Journal of Ichthyology (vol. 40, no. 4), placing it in the genus Vaillantella alongside a small number of congeners collectively called the long-fin or fork-tail loaches. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Vaillantella cinnamomea as the valid name and Kottelat as sole authority.
Vaillantella is the only genus in the family Vaillantellidae, a small Southeast-Asian family formerly placed within the broader Cobitidae but now recognised as its own lineage within Cobitoidea. The family name commemorates Léon Vaillant, a nineteenth-century French zoologist. The species epithet cinnamomea is Latin for 'cinnamon-coloured', referring to the plain brown body. The common trade name Brown Fork-Tail Loach describes both the colour and the forked tail that typifies the genus.
Morphology
Vaillantella cinnamomea is a very small, elongate loach reaching a maximum standard length of roughly 2 in. The body is plain cinnamon-brown without conspicuous banding or spotting, giving the fish a uniform, understated appearance. The tail fin is distinctly forked — the character that anchors the genus's common name — and the fins are generally well-developed and rounded. Vertebral count is 34–36 plus 16–17 caudal vertebrae, totalling 51–52, a diagnostic meristic character.
As a member of Cobitoidea the species carries a small, erectile suborbital spine beneath each eye, a shared trait across the loach superfamily that serves as a defensive structure. The body is effectively near-scaleless in the same manner as other loaches — the scales are tiny and deeply embedded — making the skin feel smooth to the touch and rendering the fish notably sensitive to medications and dissolved toxins. This is a physically delicate species that should be handled with care and only moved in a container rather than lifted in a net.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the Mahakam River basin in Kalimantan Timur (East Kalimantan), on the Indonesian portion of Borneo. It inhabits fast-flowing forest streams with clean, clear, well-oxygenated water — the kind of upland or foothill tributary that runs over leaf litter, bogwood and a substrate of sand and fine gravel beneath closed-canopy rainforest.
The habitat is characterised by pristine water quality: low nutrient load, relatively soft and slightly acidic conditions, high dissolved oxygen from the current, and abundant structural cover in the form of accumulated leaf litter and submerged wood. The fish is secretive and shelters among this organic debris. It is not a species of warm, still, tannin-stained blackwater pools but rather of actively flowing, cool-to-moderately-warm, stream water. The narrow endemic range and dependence on intact lowland forest make it inherently vulnerable to habitat disturbance.
Feeding
Vaillantella cinnamomea is a micro-invertivore, feeding on small aquatic invertebrates — zooplankton, insect larvae, small crustaceans such as cyclops and daphnia, and similar prey — picked from leaf litter and the substrate in its native streams. It is not a grazer of algae or detritus in any significant way.
In the aquarium this species is reported to be somewhat fussy and may refuse dry foods or pellets, at least initially. Small live and frozen foods — baby brine shrimp, cyclops, daphnia, bloodworm — are the recommended staples. Variety helps maintain condition. Because this is a shy, small fish, care is needed to ensure it gets enough food if kept with more assertive tankmates; feeding after lights-out or in the fish's preferred shelter area helps. Offer sinking foods that reach the bottom where the fish forages.
Mating
Almost nothing is documented about the reproductive behaviour of Vaillantella cinnamomea in the wild or in captivity. The species' rarity in the hobby and the scarcity of wild research mean that sexing criteria have not been published. In related loach families males and females may show slight differences in body depth or finnage at maturity, but no reliable dimorphism has been described for this species.
By analogy with other small Cobitoidea of fast-flowing Southeast-Asian streams, spawning is presumed to be linked to seasonal cues — changes in water temperature, flow, and water chemistry associated with the monsoon — but this remains unverified. The fish is not known to form any lasting pair bond, and there is no evidence of territory-holding or courtship display under aquarium conditions.
Breeding
Breeding Vaillantella cinnamomea in the home aquarium has not been documented. No verified spawning account appears in the hobbyist or scientific literature. Where data exist for related small Cobitoidea of clear forest streams, these fish are egg-scatterers that broadcast adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over fine substrate and leaf litter with no parental care thereafter; the fry must fend for themselves from hatching. This pattern is expected for this species, but it remains unconfirmed.
Keepers should not expect to breed this fish. The trade supply, where it occurs at all, is from wild-collected individuals from Borneo. Anyone interested in attempting captive breeding would need to replicate the seasonal triggers of its native streams — a significant undertaking for a species this rarely kept — and should regard any success as genuinely novel.
In the aquarium
Vaillantella cinnamomea is a specialist species best suited to a dedicated small-stream biotope or a quiet nano aquarium with a focus on water quality and appropriate companions. Because it is highly social and naturally shy, it should be kept in a group of at least five individuals; singly or in pairs it is likely to remain hidden and stressed. A well-filtered, clear-water tank with moderate to brisk flow, a soft sandy substrate, and generous leaf litter and bogwood replicates its home habitat and gives the group the cover it needs to feel secure and become visible.
The near-scaleless body makes Vaillantella cinnamomea sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many common treatments. It is often among the first fish in a tank to show signs of ich or other skin issues, yet must be treated at reduced doses and with gentle formulations. Filter intake pipes should be covered or guarded, as the slender body can be drawn into standard intakes. Keep it away from larger or boisterous fish; small, peaceful companions of similar water preferences are ideal. Water quality must be high and stable: this is not a fish that tolerates neglect. Temperature in the range of 72–79 °F and soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–6.8) suit it well.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Vaillantella cinnamomea as Data Deficient (2022.2), reflecting that insufficient information is available to determine its extinction risk. The designation is not reassuring: it signals that the species is too poorly known to evaluate, not that it is safe. As a narrow endemic of the Mahakam River basin in East Kalimantan, it is entirely dependent on the continued integrity of its lowland and foothill forest streams.
East Kalimantan has experienced extensive deforestation, agricultural conversion and mining activity over recent decades, all of which degrade the pristine, fast-flowing stream habitats this species requires. The fish is rarely imported and does not appear to be a significant trade target, but its low profile means that any population decline would go largely unmonitored. More fieldwork is needed both to establish its distribution with precision and to support a meaningful Red List assessment.
