Vaillantella maassi is a small, slender loach from the clear-water streams of the Sunda region of Southeast Asia, described in 1912 by the Dutch ichthyologists Max Weber and Lieven Ferdinand de Beaufort. It belongs to the family Vaillantellidae — a small, taxonomically isolated family of eel-bodied loaches from Borneo and Sumatra that sits apart from the mainstream botiid and cobitid loaches familiar to most hobbyists. Taxonomy & naming

Vaillantella maassi was described by Max Weber and Lieven Ferdinand de Beaufort in 1912. The genus Vaillantella is named in honour of the French zoologist Léon Vaillant (1834–1914), who contributed to the study of Southeast Asian fishes; the species epithet maassi commemorates G. A. F. Molengraaff and refers to a collector or patron associated with the original type material from Borneo.

Vaillantella belongs to the family Vaillantellidae, a small and taxonomically isolated family within the superfamily Cobitoidea — the broader loach lineage that also contains the botiids, cobitids (spined loaches), nemacheilids (stone and brook loaches) and balitorids (hillstream loaches). The family Vaillantellidae holds only the genus Vaillantella, which contains a handful of species from the streams of Sundaland. The old literature sometimes places these fish within broader cobitid or balitorid groupings; the Catalog of Fishes recognises Vaillantellidae as the current family for the genus.
