Taxonomy & naming
Brycon pesu was described by Johannes Müller and Franz Hermann Troschel in 1845, part of the same wave of nineteenth-century German ichthyological work that named many of the Amazon basin's characins. It belongs to the genus Brycon, a large assemblage of silvery, laterally compressed characins placed in the family Bryconidae — a family that, along with Serrasalmidae (piranhas, pacus and silver dollars), sits within the broader characin radiation of the order Characiformes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid name and combination.
Specimens sold in the aquarium trade are frequently labelled "Brycon cf. pesu" — the "cf." (confer) flag signalling that traders and even exporters are not fully confident the fish in hand matches the described species rather than a closely related, as-yet-unresolved population, which is common across this genus given how many similar small silver Brycon species share overlapping ranges. The type locality is given as Laguna Pampano in the Río Inírida region, a blackwater tributary system of the Orinoco in Colombia, and the species is also recorded from Araguaia/Tocantins basin populations in Brazil that some sources treat as part of the same species complex.
Morphology
Brycon pesu shows the classic Brycon silhouette in miniature: a streamlined, laterally compressed, torpedo-shaped body built for sustained fast swimming, a deeply forked caudal fin, and a terminal mouth armed with the small, sharp, multicuspid teeth typical of the genus. FishBase records a maximum size of 6.5 in standard length, making it the smallest described species in a genus whose other members — game fish targeted by anglers across South America — commonly reach 12–19.5 in or more.
Colouration is understated and functional rather than showy: a bright silver body typical of open-water schooling characins, without the bold banding or fin colour of many tetras. This plain, reflective silver flank is shared across most small Brycon and Hemiodus-type characins and likely serves the same purpose it does in open-water baitfish generally — disrupting a predator's ability to track and single out one fish within a moving shoal.
Habitat
The species is distributed across the Amazon and Orinoco river basins, with records spanning Brazil, Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela — one of the broader ranges recorded for a small Brycon species, though much of that range is built from scattered museum and survey records rather than dense population data. The type locality, Laguna Pampano in the Río Inírida system, is a blackwater lagoon environment, and Brazilian populations referred to the B. pesu complex are documented from the Araguaia/Tocantins basin.
Water across this range runs warm and naturally soft and slightly acidic, consistent with the blackwater and clearwater tributary systems typical of much of the Amazon and Orinoco interior. FishBase gives a temperature range of roughly 72–77 °F for the species, cooler than the upper end tolerated by many lowland Amazonian characins, and aquarium importers echo the same soft, slightly acidic water chemistry for wild-collected stock.
Feeding
Brycon pesu is recorded as an omnivore, taking both plant and animal material in the wild — a diet pattern typical of small-to-mid-sized Brycon species, which sit somewhere between the strict detritus-and-algae grazing of hemiodontids and curimatids and the more overtly predatory habits of larger Brycon and the golden dorado, Salminus. Falling fruit, seeds, insects and other invertebrates likely make up a meaningful share of its natural diet, following the pattern documented for related Brycon species in flooded-forest habitats.
In the aquarium, importer accounts describe the species as an easy, unfussy feeder that accepts common ornamental fish foods without difficulty — a useful trait given how sparse the rest of the husbandry record is. Offering a varied diet of quality flake or pellet alongside occasional live or frozen invertebrate foods and some plant matter is a reasonable, cache-consistent approach until more is documented.
Mating
No courtship behaviour has been documented for Brycon pesu in the sources available. The wider genus Brycon is not known for parental care or elaborate pair-bonding; most species are open-water spawners, and several economically important larger Brycon species are managed as migratory, hormone-induced spawners in aquaculture rather than fish that pair and court in the way substrate-spawning cichlids or catfish do.

Importer notes single out its jumping ability specifically: this is described as an excellent jumper, and any aquarium housing it must be well and securely covered, a warning worth taking literally given how often open-topped tanks lose fast, easily startled characins this way.
As a schooling species it should be kept in a group rather than alone, in a long aquarium that gives it space to swim rather than just depth. Water should be kept soft and slightly acidic, at a moderate 72–77 °F — on the cooler side relative to many Amazonian characins — with strong filtration and clean water, consistent with its blackwater and clearwater tributary origins. Feeding is straightforward, as it accepts standard aquarium foods readily. Because it is a relatively recent and limited import with little long-term care history in the hobby, keepers should treat husbandry recommendations as provisional and watch the individual fish's condition closely rather than relying on an established track record.

Brycon pesu has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so no formal conservation status or population trend exists for the species. Because no captive-breeding program is documented, any aquarium supply of this species depends on wild collection from its native range.
