Taxonomy & naming
Characidium chupa was described by Leonard P. Schultz in 1944. It belongs to the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters and sailfin characins — within the order Characiformes, and to the large genus Characidium, whose species share the darter body plan and bottom-perching habit rather than the free-swimming, shoaling behaviour typical of most tetras.
FishBase recognises a subspecific form, C. c. torbesensis, from the Rio Torbes in the Orinoco drainage, distinct from the nominate form in the Rio Chama of the Lake Maracaibo basin. Characidium is a taxonomically active genus with many superficially similar, geographically restricted species, so identification in the trade is unreliable without locality data; keep the name Characidium chupa tied to its Maracaibo/Orinoco origin rather than assuming any darter characin sold generically as a "Characidium sp." is this species.
Morphology
Characidium chupa is a small, elongate, roughly cylindrical fish rather than the laterally compressed, deep-bodied shape typical of tetras — an adaptation shared across the darter characins for holding position against current on the stream bed. FishBase records a maximum size of 3 in standard length and a maximum weight of about 11.2 g, placing it firmly among the nano-sized Crenuchidae.
Colouration in Characidium generally runs to cryptic browns, olives and silvers with a dark lateral stripe or series of blotches that break up the outline against gravel and sand — camouflage suited to a fish that relies on stillness and short darts rather than open-water speed to avoid predators. Darter characins in this genus characteristically inhabit clear, fast-flowing streams with gravel, sand and pebble substrates and strong oxygenation — moving water that a slow-swimming, bottom-perching fish can hold position in only by hugging the substrate and darting rather than cruising. Feeding

The fish is a strong jumper, so a tight-fitting cover is essential. Because it is a micro-predator that often ignores flake, keepers need to commit to small live or frozen foods to keep it in good condition, and because it perches and rests on the bottom rather than schooling actively in open water, tankmates should be calm, similarly small species that will not out-compete it at feeding time or disturb its resting spots. As with other darter characins, this is a specialist's fish for a dedicated biotope rather than a drop-in community addition.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Characidium chupa as Least Concern, an assessment dated 1 November 2020, reflecting a range across the Maracaibo basin and Orinoco tributaries that is relatively widespread even though the species is localized to smaller streams and tributaries within that range.
