Prochilodus reticulatus, the netted prochilod, is not a fish most keepers picture when they think of a South American characin: it is a large, silvery, sucker-mouthed detritivore that grows to roughly 11 in and spends its life migrating in dense schools through the rivers of the Lake Maracaibo basin in Venezuela and Colombia. Like its relatives across the genus Prochilodus, it feeds by grazing detritus and biofilm off the substrate with fleshy, sucking-disc lips rather than hunting or grazing plants, and it undertakes long-distance spawning migrations timed to the flood pulse — a life history built around river-scale movement, not aquarium-scale breeding. It occasionally appears in the trade as the "redfin prochilodus," a big, peaceful, algae-grazing showpiece for oversized community tanks, but it is not a fish that gets bred at home.

Taxonomy & naming

Prochilodus reticulatus was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1850. It belongs to the family Prochilodontidae, a small family of detritus-feeding Neotropical characins closely allied to Curimatidae and placed within the broader superfamily of characiform fishes that also contains the piranhas and pacus (Serrasalmidae); Prochilodontidae is distinguished by its highly modified, protrusible sucking lips. The genus Prochilodus currently holds around a dozen valid species distributed across South American river basins, per the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), which remains the governing authority for the valid name and combination used here.

Prochilodus reticulatus is notable among its genus for a restricted range: rather than occurring across the Amazon, Orinoco or Paraná systems like most of its relatives, it is essentially endemic to the Lake Maracaibo basin straddling Venezuela and Colombia. In the aquarium trade it is sometimes sold under the common name "redfin prochilodus," a name that, as with many Prochilodus species, is applied loosely and can be a source of confusion with other similar-looking schooling detritivores in the same genus.

Morphology

Prochilodus reticulatus has the classic prochilodontid silhouette: a moderately elongate, laterally compressed, silvery body with a small head and a distinctively blunt, protrusible mouth ringed by thick, fleshy lips adapted into a sucking disc. FishBase records a maximum size of 11 in standard length, a substantial adult size that places this species firmly outside the range of typical small community-tank characins.

The body is countershaded silver, often with a faint reticulated (netted) scale pattern that gives the species its common name, and the fins — particularly in trade specimens sold as "redfin" — can show a reddish or orange cast. As in other Prochilodus, the mouth is the most functionally important feature: the lips can be everted into a disc-like sucking structure used to graze detritus and biofilm from submerged surfaces, a feeding morphology shared with its close relatives in Curimatidae.

Habitat

This species is restricted to the Lake Maracaibo basin of Venezuela and Colombia, where it inhabits the rivers and tributary systems draining into the lake rather than the lake's brackish-influenced open waters themselves. Like other Prochilodus, it is a river-channel and floodplain fish, moving between main-channel habitat and flooded margins as water levels rise and fall seasonally.

In the aquarium trade, redfin prochilodus are typically kept on a diet of sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based foods and vegetable matter alongside standard flake or pellet foods, echoing their natural grazing habit. They are not predatory and pose no threat to tankmates on that front, though their large adult size and heavy bioload are the more relevant husbandry concerns.

Mating

No species-specific courtship or pairing behaviour for Prochilodus reticulatus was found in the sources consulted. A redfin prochilodus is a large-growing, peaceful showpiece fish, not a nano-tank or standard community species: at up to 11 in, it needs a genuinely large aquarium — the trade recommendation is 70 US gallons (roughly 70 US gal) or more — with open swimming space, a sandy substrate suited to its grazing habit, and driftwood or rocks it can graze biofilm from. It is not aggressive toward tankmates and does well with other robust, similarly sized community fish, but its adult bulk and bioload rule it out for smaller setups.

Documented aquarium care information for this species is comparatively sparse compared with more commonly kept characins, and breeding guidance in the aquarium literature is essentially nonexistent — consistent with its status as a migratory, not home-bred, species. Prospective keepers should plan for its eventual large size from the outset rather than upgrading tanks reactively, and should offer a diet weighted toward algae wafers, spirulina and vegetable matter alongside standard foods to match its natural detritivorous habit.
