Hoplias teres is a Neotropical wolf fish from the Lake Maracaibo basin of Venezuela — a cylindrical, heavy-jawed ambush predator in the trahira family, Erythrinidae. It is a modest member of its genus by the standards of Hoplias, with a maximum recorded length of only about 6 in standard length, far short of the metre-plus bulk of its giant relative Hoplias aimara, but it is built on exactly the same plan: a solitary lie-in-wait hunter with a mouthful of heavy conical teeth that will take any fish or animal it can fit in its jaws. Almost nothing has been published specifically on this species beyond a bare taxonomic and size record, so this account leans heavily on what is documented for the genus as a whole and is honest about the gaps. It is not a community fish, and anyone considering it should plan around a solitary predator, not a shoaling or mixed-species tank.

Taxonomy & naming

Hoplias teres was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1847, as part of the wave of Neotropical ichthyological description that ran through the mid-nineteenth century Histoire naturelle des poissons. It belongs to the family Erythrinidae — the trahiras or wolf fishes — within the characiform order, and to the genus Hoplias, whose valid species are governed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences). Hoplias has historically been a taxonomically difficult genus, with the wide-ranging H. malabaricus long suspected of concealing a complex of cryptic species; H. teres is one of the more geographically restricted, distinct species recognised within it.

FishBase records the species from the Lake Maracaibo basin of Venezuela, which sets it apart from the far larger, more widely distributed relatives most aquarists associate with the genus, such as the Amazonian/Guianan H. aimara and the wide-ranging H. malabaricus. Little else has been published specifically on H. teres beyond taxonomic and distributional records; there is no substantive dedicated literature on its ecology or reproductive biology, so much of what follows about its biology is inferred from better-studied congeners rather than confirmed for this species directly.

Morphology

Like other trahiras, Hoplias teres has the unmistakable wolf-fish build: an elongated, sub-cylindrical body, a broad, flattened head, and a large mouth armed with heavy, conical, interlocking teeth suited to gripping and holding prey rather than shearing it. FishBase's maximum recorded length for the species is 6 in standard length, which is small for the genus — a fraction of the size reached by the largest Hoplias — making H. teres one of the more modestly proportioned wolf fish rather than a giant.

No specific data has been documented on colouration, fin structure or other morphological detail unique to this species beyond the generic Erythrinidae body plan; the family as a whole is typically mottled brown, olive or grey, providing camouflage for an ambush lifestyle among submerged structure. Trahiras, including Hoplias, are also known to be facultative air-breathers, able to gulp air at the surface to supplement gill respiration in low-oxygen water, a trait typical of the family.

Habitat

Hoplias teres is recorded from the Lake Maracaibo River basin in Venezuela, a tropical freshwater system distinct from the Amazon, Orinoco and Guiana drainages that host most of its better-known relatives. FishBase classifies it as a benthopelagic tropical freshwater species, consistent with the ambush, structure-oriented habits typical of Hoplias — lying in wait near cover such as submerged wood, roots or dense marginal vegetation rather than actively cruising open water.

Specific water chemistry data for H. teres has not been documented. Related, better-studied Hoplias such as H. malabaricus are found across a range of warm tropical conditions, generally in the region of pH 6.0–7.5 and around 75–82 °F, and it is reasonable to expect similar conditions in the Maracaibo basin, but this should be treated as an inference from the genus rather than a confirmed figure for this species.

Feeding

Hoplias teres is a piscivorous ambush predator, in keeping with every other member of its genus. Wolf fish typically lie motionless against cover and strike explosively at passing prey, relying on a powerful gape and a grip of heavy conical teeth rather than pursuit speed. FishBase notes low fishing vulnerability and high population resilience for the species, both consistent with a hardy, opportunistic predator rather than a specialised feeder.

No dedicated dietary study has been published for H. teres specifically, but the genus as a whole feeds primarily on fish, taking any tankmate it can engulf, and will also opportunistically take crustaceans and other animal prey. In the aquarium, related Hoplias are fed on live or frozen whole fish, prawn and other meaty foods; tankmates must be sized well beyond anything the fish could swallow, and mixed-species keeping should be considered predator risk, not companionship.

Mating

No courtship behaviour has been documented specifically for Hoplias teres. In the better-studied H. malabaricus, ripening and pairing are associated with the onset of the rainy season and a rise in temperature, with adults becoming notably more territorial as spawning approaches. Whether H. teres follows a comparable seasonal pattern in the Maracaibo basin has not been recorded, and no external sexual dimorphism has been documented for this species — data on how to distinguish the sexes is simply not available.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented for Hoplias teres itself, and captive-breeding records for the species appear to be essentially nonexistent. What is known comes from the related and much better-studied H. malabaricus, which is a substrate nest-spawner: pairs excavate a shallow pit or depression in the substrate near shore, the female releases several thousand adhesive eggs roughly 0.5 in in diameter, and the male guards the nest and fry, chiefly during the rainy season from around April to June in the parts of its range where this has been studied.

It is plausible that H. teres follows a broadly similar substrate-spawning, male-guarding pattern typical of Erythrinidae, but this is an inference from the genus, not a confirmed account for the species, and this is not a fish with an established aquarium breeding history. Prospective keepers should not expect to breed it and should treat any attempt as unexplored territory rather than a documented protocol.

In the aquarium

Hoplias teres should be kept and planned for as a solitary predator. Even at its comparatively modest maximum recorded length of 6 in SL — small by the standards of the genus, where relatives such as H. aimara exceed a metre — it is a heavy-jawed ambush hunter that will kill and eat any tankmate small enough to fit in its mouth, and larger fish risk a serious bite from those conical teeth if handled or netted carelessly. A single-specimen tank with solid cover (driftwood, roots or dense planting) to give it an ambush point, stable warm water, and strong filtration to handle a predator's bioload is the realistic setup; this is a specialist's fish, not a community or mixed-predator tank.

Because so little has been published specifically on this species' aquarium requirements, keepers should extrapolate cautiously from the wider genus rather than assume specifics, and should be prepared for a fish that is rarely, if ever, seen in the trade and for which husbandry information is genuinely sparse.

Conservation

Hoplias teres has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and currently carries a status of Not Evaluated. FishBase notes low fishing vulnerability and high population resilience, which are index scores rather than a conservation assessment, but they suggest a species not inherently fragile to the modest documented threats.

As a range-restricted species tied to the Lake Maracaibo basin — a system under substantial pressure from pollution, watershed development and altered hydrology around the lake — its conservation status would benefit from a formal assessment rather than remaining an open question. Data on this species is genuinely sparse, and no specific population trend or threat data has been documented.
