Taxonomy & naming

Curimata ocellata was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Rosa Smith Eigenmann in 1889, part of the wave of Neotropical ichthyology the pair conducted around the turn of the twentieth century. It belongs to the family Curimatidae — the toothless characins, so called because most species in the family lack the jaw teeth found throughout the rest of Characiformes — within the broader order Characiformes that also contains the piranhas, pacus and silver dollars of Serrasalmidae.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) lists Curimata ocellata as a valid name, with its lectotype (MCZ 20339, from the Rio Xingu) and paralectotypes (MCZ 60884, MCZ 87453) selected by Vari in 1989 as part of a broader revision of the genus. The genus Curimata remains valid and is not one of the combinations recently split apart, unlike some of its Serrasalmidae relatives (silver dollars moved out of Myleus into Myloplus and Tometes, and the pacus out of a broader Colossoma) — Curimata ocellata keeps its original generic placement to this day.

Morphology

Curimata ocellata reaches a maximum recorded length of 9 in standard length, a modest size consistent with the genus generally — Curimata species are elongate, laterally compressed, silvery fish built for steady, unhurried grazing rather than speed or predation. As members of Curimatidae, they lack the pronounced dentition of predatory characins; the mouth is small, subterminal or ventrally positioned, and adapted to scraping algae and biofilm from submerged wood, rocks and sediment rather than seizing prey.

Detailed morphological description beyond the type material and basic FishBase data is sparse for this species; much of what is documented comes from the original 1889 description and the lectotype series held at the Museum of Comparative Zoology. As with many Curimatidae, coloration is typically a plain silver flank without the bold patterning seen in showier tetras and characins — data on this species' specific markings is limited in the sources available.
