Curimata vittata was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1858 as Curimatus vittatus, based on material now held as the lectotype (NHMW 68805.1) at the Natural History Museum Vienna. It sits in the genus Curimata within the family Curimatidae, a large Neotropical group of small to medium detritivorous characins — distinct from the toothy predatory piranhas (Serrasalmidae) and the large migratory Prochilodus/Semaprochilodus "flannelmouths" that also appear in this section, though all three families are grouped loosely under the "Hemiodus & minor characins" umbrella used here for the smaller, non-piranha, non-pacu characiforms of South America.
The genus was revised systematically by Vari (1989), whose treatment remains the standard reference for curimatid taxonomy and is cited by the Encyclopedia of Life and other aggregators for this species. As with many curimatids, older literature and some trade sources may still use the now-outdated genus spelling Curimatus; the valid combination is Curimata vittata (Kner, 1858).
Morphology
