Curimata vittata is a small, quiet detritus-grazer from the Amazon, upper Orinoco and Essequibo basins — a slim, silver-flanked characin marked with an irregular tiger-striped saddle pattern along the back and a golden-yellow band running down the middle of the flank. It belongs to Curimatidae, a family of toothless or near-toothless characins built to sift fine organic sediment (aufwuchs) and algae from riverbeds and sandy margins rather than to hunt, and it grows to a modest maximum of about 7.5 in standard length. It has none of the size or drama of its more famous serrasalmid relatives in this section — no piranha jaws, no pacu bulk — and it turns up only occasionally in the aquarium trade, imported alongside other South American characins rather than kept as a hobby staple. Taxonomy & naming

Curimata vittata was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1858 as Curimatus vittatus, based on material now held as the lectotype (NHMW 68805.1) at the Natural History Museum Vienna. It sits in the genus Curimata within the family Curimatidae, a large Neotropical group of small to medium detritivorous characins — distinct from the toothy predatory piranhas (Serrasalmidae) and the large migratory Prochilodus/Semaprochilodus "flannelmouths" that also appear in this section, though all three families are grouped loosely under the "Hemiodus & minor characins" umbrella used here for the smaller, non-piranha, non-pacu characiforms of South America.

The genus was revised systematically by Vari (1989), whose treatment remains the standard reference for curimatid taxonomy and is cited by the Encyclopedia of Life and other aggregators for this species. As with many curimatids, older literature and some trade sources may still use the now-outdated genus spelling Curimatus; the valid combination is Curimata vittata (Kner, 1858).

Morphology

Curimata vittata is a slender, laterally compressed characin reaching a modest maximum recorded length of 7.5 in standard length — small even by the standards of minor characins, and tiny next to the pacus and true piranhas that share this atlas section. The most distinctive feature noted by aquarium importers is its patterning: an irregular, tiger-like striped or blotched pattern across the back, set against silver flanks with a greenish-to-golden sheen, and a golden-yellow stripe running along the middle of the body from roughly behind the gill cover toward the tail.

Like other curimatids, the mouth is small, underslung and adapted for grazing rather than grasping prey — curimatids characteristically lack functional oral teeth and instead rely on pharyngeal structures to process fine detritus and algae scraped or sifted from the substrate.
