Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus tigrinus was described by the Russian-American ichthyologist Nikolai Borodin in 1929. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Leporinus, one of the largest genera in the family. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) lists Leporinus tigrinus Borodin, 1929 as the valid name, with a type locality in Goyaz (Goiás), Brazil.
The genus name Leporinus derives from the Latin lepus ("hare"), an old reference to the group's split, hare-like upper lip; the species epithet tigrinus is Latin for "tiger-striped", describing the bold dark bars on an orange-to-yellow ground that are the fish's most obvious field mark. Leporinus and the closely related Anostomus are often confused in the aquarium trade — both share the head-down grazing posture and barred patterning — but they are distinguished on close inspection by head and mouth shape and by the precise number and arrangement of body bars, which in L. tigrinus runs to two bars on the head and eight on the trunk.
Morphology
The tiger headstander has the elongated, torpedo-shaped body typical of Leporinus, with a small, slightly upturned mouth adapted for grazing surfaces rather than seizing prey. FishBase records a maximum size of 11.5 in standard length in females, with males somewhat smaller at around 8.5 in SL — a genuinely large fish for a community aquarium, not the compact nano species the trade often implies.
Ground colour is bright orange to yellow, countershaded with a lighter belly and a richer yellow dorsum, over which run bold, dark transversal bars — conspicuously black on live specimens — that bifurcate (split) dorsally. Two bars cross the head and eight more cross the trunk, giving the tiger-striped pattern the species is named for. This barred pattern can fade or intensify with mood, age and water conditions, and is most vivid in well-conditioned, undisturbed fish.
Habitat
Leporinus tigrinus is native to Brazil, recorded from the Tocantins, Xingu and Tapajós river basins within the wider Amazon drainage, and has also been documented as an occurrence in the upper Paraná basin. Across this range it occupies benthopelagic positions in tropical freshwater river channels, holding station near submerged wood, rock and vegetation that it grazes for algae and biofilm.
Water across its native range is warm tropical freshwater; FishBase-derived aquarium guidance suggests a workable pH range of roughly 6.0–8.0 for captive care. As with many Amazonian river characins, well-oxygenated, flowing water is preferred over still conditions, consistent with its benthopelagic, current-adapted lifestyle.
Feeding
Leporinus tigrinus is an omnivorous aufwuchs grazer, feeding in the characteristic oblique, head-down posture of the genus as it picks algae and biofilm from wood, rock and other submerged surfaces. This grazing habit extends to soft aquarium plants, which the species will readily strip or shred given the chance, and it will also take small invertebrates opportunistically.
In the aquarium it accepts a broad diet: blanched vegetables such as spinach and zucchini, quality pellets, and frozen foods. A vegetable-forward diet with only modest protein supplementation best matches its natural grazing habit, and keepers should not expect it to leave live or delicate plants alone.
Mating
Documented reproductive behaviour in Leporinus tigrinus is limited. FishBase notes that breeding occurs in distinct pairs within weedy habitat, implying at least a loose pair-bonding behaviour around spawning rather than open shoal spawning, but detailed courtship description is not available in the sources consulted here. No reliable external sexual dimorphism has been documented for this species beyond the general size difference noted above (females reaching a larger maximum length than males).
Breeding
Leporinus tigrinus is best treated as an egg-scattering species that is rarely bred in the home aquarium; FishBase's note of pair-spawning in weedy places is consistent with the broader Leporinus/Anostomus pattern of scattering eggs among fine-leaved vegetation rather than building or guarding a nest. Some Leporinus species are farmed commercially in South America, but aquarium-hobbyist breeding reports for this particular species are sparse.
No parental care beyond the act of pairing and spawning in cover has been documented for the species. Prospective breeders should expect this to be a difficult, opportunistic proposition rather than a routine aquarium project, and should not assume any of the nest-building or brood-guarding behaviour seen in other characin groups.
In the aquarium
The tiger headstander is a striking fish that is frequently under-housed: at up to nearly 12 in SL it needs a genuinely large, long aquarium (a mature specimen is not a 20-gallon fish), with open swimming space, strong water movement and well-oxygenated water, alongside wood and rock surfaces to graze. It is a known fin-nipper and becomes more territorial and quarrelsome with age and in cramped quarters, so tankmates should be robust, fast-moving fish that are not slow or long-finned, and stocking density should err generous rather than crowded.
Expect soft, leafy plants to be grazed or shredded — this is a plant-eating, not a plant-safe, species. Individual temperament varies: some specimens stay relatively calm toward conspecifics while others turn quarrelsome, so keepers should watch behaviour closely as the fish matures and be prepared to separate persistent aggressors. It is not a beginner community fish despite its attractive colouring.
Conservation
Leporinus tigrinus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, with no major documented threats to the species. It occupies a reasonably wide native range across several major Amazonian tributaries (Tocantins, Xingu, Tapajós), which likely contributes to its stable status.
As with many characins from these basins, the general long-term pressures on Amazonian freshwater habitats — damming, deforestation-linked sedimentation and water-quality change — are relevant background context even though the species is not currently considered threatened.
