Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus tristriatus was described by José Birindelli and Heraldo Britski in 2013 in the Journal of Fish Biology, from material collected at Cachoeira da Neblina on the Rio Peixoto de Azevedo, a tributary of the Rio Teles Pires within the greater Tapajós basin of Mato Grosso, Brazil. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within Characiformes, a family whose members are named for their oblique, head-down feeding posture, and to the large genus Leporinus, which the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises as holding dozens of valid species distinguished largely by body stripe pattern, tooth counts and scale-row counts.
The species epithet tristriatus is Latin for "three-striped," from tri- (three) and striatus (striped), referring to the three dark longitudinal stripes running along the body that distinguish it from other striped Leporinus in the same river systems. Diagnostic characters given in the original description include a subinferior (underslung) mouth, three teeth on the premaxilla, four teeth on the dentary, and twelve scale rows around the caudal peduncle — the kind of fine-grained counts that separate look-alike Leporinus species from one another.
Morphology
Leporinus tristriatus shows the elongated, moderately compressed body typical of the genus, with the underslung, subinferior mouth used for grazing surfaces rather than gulping open water. Its most visible field mark is the three dark longitudinal stripes running the length of the body, which give the species its name and separate it from co-occurring striped relatives in the Tocantins, Xingu and Tapajós system.
No published maximum length was found in the sources reviewed for this account, and the original description does not appear to report one in the material available. Related, better-documented Leporinus species from the same genus — L. fasciatus, L. friderici, L. maculatus and L. striatus among them — typically reach roughly 8–12 in as adults, and that range is a reasonable, genus-level expectation for L. tristriatus, but it should be treated as an inference rather than a confirmed figure for this species specifically.
Habitat
The species is known from the Tocantins, Xingu and Tapajós river basins in the southern Amazon region of Brazil, with its type locality on the Rio Peixoto de Azevedo, a Teles Pires tributary within the Tapajós system. These are clearwater and mixed clearwater/whitewater river systems draining the Brazilian Shield, characterised by rocky and sandy stretches, marginal vegetation and, at the type locality, a waterfall (cachoeira) reach — the kind of moving, well-oxygenated water where algae and biofilm build up on hard surfaces for a grazing headstander to work.
No specific water-chemistry readings for this species were found in the sources reviewed. As a general expectation for Amazonian Leporinus from this region, warm, soft-to-moderate, mildly acidic-to-neutral river water is typical, but precise temperature and pH figures for L. tristriatus itself are not documented here and should not be assumed beyond that general pattern.
Feeding
Leporinus tristriatus is presumed, on genus-level evidence, to be a head-down grazer or aufwuchs feeder — working algae and biofilm off submerged wood and rock in the characteristic oblique, nose-down posture that gives headstanders their common name, while also taking soft plant material and small invertebrates opportunistically. This diet pattern is well documented across Leporinus generally, including in related species such as L. fasciatus and L. friderici, though no species-specific dietary study of L. tristriatus was located.
In the aquarium, genus practice — feeding a vegetable-forward diet of blanched greens, algae wafers and spirulina-based foods supplemented with occasional protein such as bloodworm or brine shrimp — is the reasonable starting point for this species, pending any species-specific data.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour specific to Leporinus tristriatus was found in the sources reviewed for this account. Across the genus, Leporinus and its close relative Anostomus are egg-scatterers with no documented pair-bonding ritual beyond generalised chasing and releasing of eggs over open substrate or fine vegetation; there is no evidence of nest-building, mouthbrooding or bubble-nesting in this genus. External sexual dimorphism has not been documented for this species.
Breeding
Leporinus tristriatus is not documented as bred in the aquarium hobby, and no captive-breeding account for the species was found. Based on genus-level pattern, headstanders in Leporinus and Anostomus are egg-scatterers that release eggs over open substrate or fine-leaved vegetation with no parental care afterward; a handful of Leporinus species have been spawned incidentally by hobbyists and some are farmed commercially, but successful home breeding is rare across the genus and there is no indication L. tristriatus has been reproduced in captivity. Prospective keepers should not expect to breed this species and should treat any aquarium stock as wild-collected or farmed rather than captive-bred.
In the aquarium
Leporinus tristriatus is a recently described, poorly documented species in the trade, and firm aquarium guidance specific to it is not available. What can be said with confidence, drawn from the well-documented behaviour of its genus, is a cautionary one: Leporinus species are notorious fin-nippers and become increasingly territorial as they mature, and several members of the genus are unsuitable for peaceful community tanks once they approach adult size. A keeper should plan for a robust, mid-to-large tank with open swimming space, driftwood and rock offering grazing surfaces, and tankmates chosen to be too fast or too robust to be nipped — or should keep the species in a species tank or with similarly boisterous fish.
Given the genus's tendency toward soft plant grazing, tender aquarium plants are also at risk. Because size, temperament and exact husbandry needs for L. tristriatus itself are not documented in the sources reviewed, a cautious keeper should default to the more demanding end of genus expectations — larger tank, more cover, fewer delicate tankmates — rather than assume this species is gentler than its relatives.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Leporinus tristriatus as Least Concern, consistent with the general pattern of secure conservation status for characins with a multi-basin range in the southern Amazon. The species is known from the Tocantins, Xingu and Tapajós basins, but no detailed population trend or threat assessment beyond the Least Concern listing was found in the sources reviewed. As with many recently described Amazonian fish, it is not a species of particular conservation concern at present, though it shares its river systems with basins under increasing pressure from damming and land-use change, which are relevant long-term watch items for the region generally rather than documented threats to this species specifically.
