Prochilodus lacustris was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1907. It belongs to the genus Prochilodus within the family Prochilodontidae, a distinct characiform lineage of migratory, detritus-feeding "flagtail" fishes closely related to the curimatas (Curimatidae) and separate from the piranha-and-pacu family Serrasalmidae. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid name and combination; this account follows that placement and does not alter the genus.
Prochilodus and the related genus Semaprochilodus are frequently confused with one another in both scientific and hobby literature, since both groups share the same deep body, small downturned mouth and grazing habit.
