Taxonomy & naming
Prochilodus mariae was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1922 and placed in the family Prochilodontidae, a small Neotropical characiform family of migratory detritivores that also includes the closely related Semaprochilodus (the flagtail/silver prochilodus of the Amazon and Orinoco). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises Prochilodus mariae as a valid species within the genus Prochilodus, distinct from its more widely distributed Amazonian relative Prochilodus nigricans and from the several other Prochilodus species described across South American river systems.
The genus name Prochilodus derives from the Greek pro- ("before" or "in front") and cheilos ("lip"), referring to the fleshy, protrusible lips characteristic of the genus; the species epithet mariae is a Latinized personal name, following the common nineteenth- and early twentieth-century practice of honouring a collector or associate. In the aquarium trade the species circulates under the common names "flagtail prochilodus" and "redfin prochilodus," names shared loosely with related Prochilodus and Semaprochilodus species and a frequent source of misidentification between them.
Morphology
Prochilodus mariae has the classic prochilodontid body plan: deep-bodied and laterally compressed, with a small head dominated by thick, fleshy, downturned lips that can be protruded to form a disc-like sucking mouth adapted for rasping algae and biofilm from hard surfaces and picking detritus from sediment. FishBase lists a maximum standard length of 16 in, making this one of the larger fish likely to be encountered in the non-piranha characin trade and well beyond the size most home aquarists anticipate from a juvenile.
Colouration is silvery overall, with the diagnostic field mark being the tail fin: bold, contrasting black and white (or reddish-orange) bands cross the caudal fin, giving rise to the "flagtail" and "redfin" common names. The dorsal and other fins may also show reddish tinges in good condition. Juveniles sold in the trade are considerably smaller and less strikingly marked than mature wild fish, and the sucker-mouth is often the most reliable way to distinguish young Prochilodus from superficially similar silver characins.
Habitat
Prochilodus mariae is native to the Orinoco River basin of Venezuela and Colombia, where FishBase and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service both describe it as benthopelagic and potamodromous — that is, it lives near the bottom and mid-water of large rivers and undertakes migrations entirely within fresh water rather than to the sea. It is a schooling species, often encountered in large aggregations, and its life history is tightly bound to the Orinoco's seasonal flood pulse: fish move between main channels, floodplains and tributaries to feed and spawn as water levels rise and fall through the year.
The available cached sources do not report a specific temperature or pH range for the species; FishBase notes only that it inhabits tropical freshwater without listing precise chemistry parameters. Given its Orinoco basin range, it can be assumed to experience the generally warm, seasonally fluctuating conditions typical of that system, but keepers should not treat an absence of documented figures as licence to guess — specific temperature and pH data for this species is sparse.
Feeding
Prochilodus mariae is a detritivorous omnivore, and this is one of the better-documented aspects of its biology: a feeding-ecology study published in the journal Orinoquia describes its diet as centred on algae, biofilm, detritus and plant matter scraped from submerged surfaces and sediment, with juveniles in particular showing a markedly herbivorous feeding pattern in their first life stage. This grazing strategy, carried out by huge migratory schools, makes the species an important link in nutrient cycling within the Orinoco basin, redistributing organic material as fish move along the river during their seasonal runs.
In the aquarium this diet translates into a fish that does best on a plant- and detritus-leaning menu: high-quality algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, blanched vegetables and other vegetable-forward foods should form the bulk of the diet, supplemented by general omnivore flake or pellet. It is not a predatory or fin-nipping species and poses little direct threat to tankmates, though its size and grazing habits mean it will happily strip algae and biofilm from any surface, including ornaments and driftwood, in a large planted or decorated tank.
Mating
Prochilodus mariae is a migratory food fish, and its reproduction in the wild is tied to long-distance spawning migrations timed to the Orinoco's flood pulse rather than to any fixed territorial courtship of the kind seen in substrate-spawning aquarium fish. Cached hobby and aquaculture sources describe natural breeding conditions as extremely difficult to replicate outside a free-flowing river system, since the cues that trigger spawning readiness are believed to include seasonal changes in water level, flow and temperature across hundreds of kilometres of river, not conditions that can be reproduced in a static aquarium.
No external sexual dimorphism is documented in the cached sources for this species, and none should be assumed; distinguishing males from females in Prochilodus mariae is not reliably reported in the available literature.
Breeding
This is a migratory food-fish species, and it should be stated plainly: Prochilodus mariae is not bred in the home aquarium. Cached sources describing its breeding and aquarium behaviour are explicit that captive breeding is "rare to impossible" outside specialised conditions, because the species relies on long-distance river migrations and flood-pulse cues to spawn. Where reproduction of Prochilodus and related prochilodontids is achieved outside the wild, it is through commercial or hormone-induced spawning at aquaculture and fisheries-research facilities aiming to support stocking programs or food-fish production, not through hobbyist breeding setups.
There are no reliable home-aquarium breeding records for this species, and prospective keepers should not expect or attempt to breed it; its place in the aquarium is as a large, actively grazing schooling fish rather than a breeding project.
In the aquarium
Prochilodus mariae is frequently sold small and undersized relative to its adult potential, and this is the single most important thing for a keeper to understand: at a documented maximum of 16 in SL, this is a large fish that requires a correspondingly large aquarium — several hundred litres at minimum for an adult — with strong filtration to handle both its size and its grazing, detritus-stirring habits. It is a schooling species in the wild, and while solitary specimens are often kept, a group in a suitably large system will show more natural behaviour and reduced stress.
As a peaceful, non-predatory grazer, Prochilodus mariae is compatible with a wide range of similarly sized community fish and does not pose the fin-nipping or predation risks associated with true piranhas or larger predatory characins. Its constant grazing on algae and biofilm makes it a useful (if large) tank cleaner, but it will also disturb loosely rooted plants and fine substrate while foraging. Because it cannot realistically be bred at home and grows well beyond the capacity of most standard tanks, prospective keepers should plan for its eventual size before acquiring one and should never release surplus or overgrown fish into local waterways.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Prochilodus mariae as Least Concern, but the cached 2022.2 assessment notes a decreasing population trend, attributing the decline to habitat loss from dam construction, overfishing and water pollution across the Orinoco basin — the same pressures affecting many large migratory fish in that system. As a full migrant dependent on connected river reaches for its seasonal spawning runs, the species is particularly vulnerable to the kind of river fragmentation that dams introduce, even though its overall range and population currently keep it out of a threatened category.
Prochilodus mariae supports commercial and subsistence fisheries within its native Orinoco range in Venezuela and Colombia, where it is an important food fish; this fisheries pressure, combined with ongoing habitat change, is worth watching even though the species is not currently classified as threatened.
