Taxonomy & naming
Loricariichthys ucayalensis was described by Charles Tate Regan in 1913, the same year in which several other loricariid taxa from South American river expeditions were formalised in the scientific literature. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises it as a valid species under the combination Loricariichthys ucayalensis Regan, 1913, with type locality cited as the Ucayali River, Peru.
The genus Loricariichthys is placed within the subfamily Loricariinae — the whiptail catfishes — one of the major lineages in Loricariidae. Loricariinae is characterised by a highly depressed body, a flattened head with elaborate lip structures, and a long, thread-like caudal filament in many species. Within the genus, the remarkable lower-lip hypertrophy seen in brooding males is a diagnostic and reproductive hallmark. Ferraris (2003), the standard regional checklist reference, provides the primary systematic treatment of the tribe.
Morphology
Like all members of its genus, L. ucayalensis has the strongly depressed, elongate body plan typical of Loricariinae. The head is broad and flattened, the snout rounded, and the entire dorsal and lateral surface is encased in keeled bony scutes. The ventral surface is partly plated in the trunk region. The mouth is subterminal and ventrally oriented, equipped with short, fine teeth suited to scraping biofilm and organic detritus from hard substrates.
The most distinctive feature of the genus is the lower lip of breeding males: it becomes greatly thickened and expanded, forming a fleshy pad capable of holding an egg clutch against its surface. Outside the breeding season the lip still shows a typically broad, fleshy profile compared with relatives, but the extreme hypertrophy is a reproductive condition. Maximum recorded total length is 8.5 in (FishBase, Ref. 36389, Ferraris 2003), making it a medium-sized member of its genus.
Mature males also develop elongated odontodes (tooth-like denticles) on the head and along the pectoral-fin spine, traits common to Loricariinae males approaching or entering breeding condition.
Habitat
Loricariichthys ucayalensis is known from the upper Amazon drainage, specifically the Ucayali River basin of Peru. The Ucayali is a large, sediment-rich whitewater river originating from Andean tributaries and carrying a high load of fine particulate matter. It flows through lowland Amazonian floodplain, with a dynamic mosaic of channels, oxbows, flooded forest margins, and sandy or silty benthic habitats.
FishBase records water parameter tolerances for the species of pH 7.0 or above and hardness up to 20 dH, with a temperature range of 75–82 °F — consistent with the warm, moderately hard, near-neutral to slightly alkaline conditions found in many Ucayali tributaries. Like other members of the genus, it is facultatively able to breathe atmospheric air, an adaptation valuable in oxygen-poor floodplain environments.
Feeding
Based on trophic level (2.6) and the general biology of Loricariinae, L. ucayalensis is a detritivore and biofilm grazer. The ventrally oriented mouth is well adapted to grazing microalgae, fine detritus, and associated microbial mats from sand, silt, and submerged surfaces. The Ucayali's rich organic sediment load would provide abundant organic-detritus input year-round.
Specific gut-content data for this species are not published in accessible literature. By analogy with studied congeners, the diet likely includes diatoms, filamentous algae, fine particulate organic matter, and invertebrate fragments ingested incidentally with sediment. Species-specific dietary studies are lacking.
Mating
The mating biology of Loricariichthys is among the most unusual of any loricariid genus. Males develop a pronounced hypertrophy of the lower lip as a prelude to and during the breeding season. It is on this expanded lip surface that the female deposits eggs and to which they adhere, transferring the clutch to the male at or shortly after spawning.
Male readiness for spawning is signalled by the degree of lower-lip development and, in common with other Loricariinae, by elongated odontodes on the head and pectoral girdle. Females are typically slightly broader-bodied when gravid. Species-specific observations on courtship behaviour in L. ucayalensis in the wild are not documented in published sources.
Breeding
After the eggs are transferred to the male's lower lip, the male carries the attached clutch through incubation — a genuinely mobile form of paternal egg-brooding unusual even within Loricariidae. The eggs are held against the lip surface, kept aerated by the male's movements and the water current passing over them. The male continues to feed and move through the habitat while brooding.
This lip-brooding strategy contrasts with the cave-guarding behaviour seen in many other loricariid genera and has been interpreted as an adaptation to the open, shifting substrates of large floodplain rivers where fixed nest sites may be scarce or frequently disturbed. Published accounts of clutch size and incubation duration for L. ucayalensis specifically are not available in the accessible literature. Details come from the broader genus literature, including aquarium observations of related lip-brooding Loricariichthys species.
In the aquarium
Loricariichthys ucayalensis is not established in the ornamental trade and is rarely if ever encountered in hobby sources. What can be inferred from genus biology applies: the species would require a large, well-filtered aquarium with a fine sand or silt substrate over which it can graze, and a warm temperature (75–82 °F) consistent with Ucayali basin conditions. pH near neutral to slightly alkaline (7.0–7.5) and moderate hardness suit the documented tolerances.
As a mid-sized loricariid reaching 8.5 in TL, a tank of at least 40 US gal would be appropriate for an adult. Open sandy areas are important for natural foraging behaviour. The lip-brooding reproductive behaviour would make for exceptional observation if the species were ever bred in captivity, though no such accounts are known. Tankmates should be peaceful species that do not compete aggressively for bottom space.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Loricariichthys ucayalensis as Least Concern, with the assessment published on 25 April 2014. The species occupies the upper Amazon drainage, a region where significant natural habitat remains. No major documented threats are noted in the assessment, and its distribution within the broad Ucayali basin encompasses a substantial geographic extent.
The wider Amazon basin faces continuing pressure from deforestation, sedimentation, and agricultural runoff affecting water quality and benthic habitats important to detritivorous loricariids. At present, L. ucayalensis is not considered to face significant threat at the population level.
