Taxonomy & naming
Hypostomus carinatus was formally described by Steindachner in 1881 in the Denkschriften der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften Wien, Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Classe (volume 43, page 108 [8], Plate 4, figure 2). The original combination was Plecostomus carinatus; the species was subsequently transferred to Hypostomus, which the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises as the valid genus. The full valid name is therefore Hypostomus carinatus (Steindachner, 1881), with Plecostomus carinatus as the basionym.
In the aquarium hobby, this species is best known as L166 — the code assigned under the DATZ L-number system for wild-caught specimens imported from the middle Amazon region. The L-number predated formal scientific identification of the trade fish; once the identity of L166 was confirmed as H. carinatus, the name and code became linked. Common names in circulation include Blackspotted Orange Pleco and, in Danish records, Sortplettet Appelsinsugemalle.
The genus Hypostomus is one of the largest within Loricariidae, encompassing well over 100 valid species and representing a major challenge for taxonomy. Hypostomus sits within subfamily Hypostominae, tribe Hypostomini.
Morphology
Hypostomus carinatus reaches a maximum recorded length of 10 in standard length (SL), placing it in the mid-size range for the genus. The species name carinatus — Latin for 'keeled' — refers to the pronounced lateral keels, ridges running along the bony scute rows on the flanks, which are a diagnostically useful character.
The most distinctive aspect of this species is its colouration: a warm orange to yellow-orange base overlaid with numerous dark brown to black spots of variable size, giving rise to the trade name Blackspotted Orange Pleco. This colour pattern is atypical within Hypostomus, where most species are grey, brown, or tan with dark spotting against a paler ground — making L166's orange ground colour immediately recognisable.
The ventrally placed mouth is disc-like and suctorial, suited for grazing hard surfaces. The body is encased in five lateral rows of bony scutes with the characteristic keels noted in the species name. Sexual dimorphism data for this species are not detailed in the available sources beyond the general Hypostomus pattern, in which mature males may develop odontodes on the pectoral spines and flanks.
Habitat
Hypostomus carinatus has a broad distribution across the central Amazon basin in Brazil. FishBase records the species from the Middle Amazon River basin; PlanetCatfish documents occurrences across a wide range of major drainages including the Middle Amazon (Solimões), Rio Negro, Lower Amazon, Nhamundá, Madeira (dos Marmelos and Branco tributaries), Tapajós, Trombetas, Uatumã, Juruá, and Japurá river systems. Like virtually all members of Hypostomus, this species is benthopelagic, living close to or on the substrate in freshwater tropical rivers. The genus is broadly associated with rocky, sandy, or muddy river margins, submerged wood, and root systems, depending on regional habitat availability. The Amazon basin drainages it occupies experience significant seasonal water-level fluctuation — the flood pulse — which influences availability of food and shelter.
Specific physical and chemical water parameters measured at collection sites for H. carinatus are not available in the cached sources. The broad Amazon basin distribution implies tolerance of a range of conditions typical of that system: soft to moderately hard, warm tropical freshwater.
Feeding
Hypostomus carinatus is an omnivorous grazer in the broad sense typical of large Hypostomus: the suctorial disc-mouth scrapes algae, biofilm, detritus, and associated invertebrates from submerged hard surfaces including rocks, woody debris, and submerged roots. Large Hypostomus are not primarily xylophages in the manner of Panaque but do incorporate wood-associated biofilm and detritus as part of a generalist scraping diet.
In captivity, Hypostomus of this size class are fed a varied diet of algae-based sinking wafers, spirulina pellets, blanched vegetables (courgette/zucchini, cucumber, sweet potato), and occasional protein items such as sinking carnivore pellets or defrosted bloodworm. Natural algae growth on tank glass and décor provides supplementary foraging.
At up to 10 in SL, H. carinatus is a substantial fish with a correspondingly significant bioload; filtration and water change regimens must be sized accordingly.
Mating
Specific courtship observations for Hypostomus carinatus in captivity are not documented in the available sources. The general Hypostomus breeding biology involves males taking ownership of cavities — holes in earthen banks, crevices in submerged root masses, or hollow logs — and attracting or coaxing females to deposit eggs within the defended site.

Breeding

Based on the biology of the genus, the expected reproductive mode is cave spawning with the male guarding a clutch of adhesive eggs within a defended burrow or natural cavity. Paternal care — the male fanning and defending eggs through incubation — is standard for Hypostomus. Clutch sizes in larger Hypostomus species typically number in the hundreds of eggs.
Successful captive breeding in large Hypostomus generally requires a spacious tank with robust filtration, a prepared clay bank or deep cavity for spawning, and sustained conditioning on a nutritious diet with water parameter cycles mimicking seasonal change.
In the aquarium
Hypostomus carinatus is an uncommon species in the hobby despite its recognisable colouration. Only two registered keepers are noted on PlanetCatfish, and the species appears infrequently in trade outside of specialist importers offering wild-caught Amazon catfishes.
At a maximum of 10 in SL, this fish requires a spacious aquarium — a minimum of 80 US gal is a reasonable starting point for a single adult, with larger volumes strongly preferred. Décor should include substantial cave or crevice options (large ceramic tubes, hollowed bogwood, clay pipe) and the tank should be well-filtered with good oxygenation. Water temperature in the range typical of central Amazon lowland rivers — approximately 75–86 °F — is appropriate, with soft to moderately hard water and near-neutral to mildly acidic pH.
The distinctive orange-and-black colouration makes L166 an attractive display fish for a dedicated large-catfish or South American biotope aquarium. Its substantial adult size and waste production make it incompatible with small community tanks. Tankmates should be robust, large-bodied fish that will not be bullied or outcompeted for food at the substrate.
No captive-bred specimens appear to be available in the trade, so any fish encountered will typically be wild-caught imports from Brazilian river fisheries.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus carinatus as Least Concern in an assessment dated 30 October 2020. The wide distribution across the central Amazon basin — encompassing multiple major drainage systems — was the primary basis for this assessment. No major threats were identified at the time of the evaluation, and the species is not a target of commercial fisheries.
The Amazon basin remains subject to broad deforestation, mercury pollution from artisanal gold mining, large-scale dam construction on major tributaries, and the ecological consequences of the annual flood-pulse disruption. While these pressures do not currently appear to threaten H. carinatus at a species level given its broad range, localised population impacts in heavily impacted drainages cannot be ruled out. Continued monitoring is appropriate given the pace of habitat change across Amazonia.
