One of the few genuine wood-eaters in the large genus Hypostomus, this upper-Amazon catfish was originally described in the genus Cochliodon on the strength of its spoon-shaped, cochleariform teeth — the same rasping tools that make it a dedicated xylivore across the rivers of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Its status as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List reflects how little field survey effort has reached its remote forest-stream haunts.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus oculeus was formally described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1943 in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (volume 95, page 256), placed in the genus Cochliodon — itself at the time a receptacle for loricariids bearing spoon-shaped teeth. The valid combination Hypostomus oculeus dates from a new combination made by Weber and Montoya (2001, in press), as the genus Cochliodon was subsumed into the broad genus Hypostomus following phylogenetic revision. The earlier combination Cochliodon oculeus (Fowler, 1943) and the subsequent aquarium trade name Panaque oculeus are both treated as synonyms in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).

Armbruster (2003, Zootaxa 249) placed H. oculeus within the H. cochliodon species-group — a cohesive clade of Hypostomus united by a suite of derived characters: cochleariform (spoon-shaped) teeth suited for rasping wood, and pronounced keels along the lateral plate series. Within this group, H. oculeus can be distinguished from the closely related H. ericius and H. hemicochliodon by details of tooth morphology. Museum specimens from the Río Aguarico and Río Payamino (Zawadzki et al. 2013) confirm that the species is present across a wider slice of the upper Amazon drainage than the FishBase range statement (upper Japurá only) implies; the full supported distribution spans the Río Caquetá/Japurá system in Colombia, several Ecuadorean tributaries of the Río Napo (Ríos Aguarico, Payamino, Due, Corrientes), and the Río Cenepa in the Río Marañón drainage of northern Peru.

Morphology

The most distinctive feature of H. oculeus, and the one that originally placed it in Cochliodon, is its cochleariform dentition: the teeth are broad and spoon-shaped rather than the narrower bicuspid form typical of most Hypostomus. This tooth shape, shared with Panaque and a handful of other xylivore loricariids, represents a convergent adaptation for scraping cellulose-rich material from submerged wood. The lateral plate series bears conspicuous keels, another diagnostic character of the H. cochliodon group as defined by Armbruster (2003).

FishBase records a maximum standard length of 8.5 in SL for an unsexed or male specimen. Field experience and aquarium sources suggest total length approaches 10 in TL. The body plan follows the typical Hypostomus pattern: robust, dorsoventrally flattened, armoured with overlapping bony scutes, and equipped with a large sucker mouth positioned ventrally. Ground colouration and precise spotting or pattern details are not captured in available sources; data are sparse.

Habitat

The type locality is the Río Orteguaza (also spelled Orteguasa) near Florencia, in the Caquetá department of Colombia — coordinates approximately 1.5°N, 75.5°W. The Río Orteguaza is a blackwater to mixed-water tributary of the Río Caquetá, which in turn drains eastward into the Amazon as the Río Japurá. Museum specimens from Ecuador extend the known range to Río Aguarico and Río Payamino localities near the Colombia–Ecuador border.

Water parameters recorded from the region vary appreciably between sources. FishBase lists a temperature range of 64–75 °F, which is at the cool end for upper Amazonian lowland rivers; the German wels-database suedamerikafans.de records 75–84 °F for this species, a range more consistent with tropical lowland conditions. The discrepancy likely reflects either different altitude/locality combinations or data-source differences; the warmer range is more plausible for the Caquetá lowlands. A pH range of 5.5–7.0 spans the blackwater and mixed-water chemistry typical of these upper Amazon tributaries. The species is sympatric with Cochliodon ericius and Cochliodon hemicochliodon at some localities.

Feeding

Hypostomus oculeus is a xylivore — a wood-eating catfish. Its spoon-shaped teeth, the evolutionary signature of the H. cochliodon group, are adapted for rasping the surface of submerged timber and ingesting wood fibres together with the biofilm (bacteria, fungi, and detritus) colonising those surfaces. Plants are consumed as a dietary supplement; the fish is reported to eat aquatic vegetation in addition to wood.

In captivity, driftwood must be treated as a dietary necessity rather than merely decorative. Supplementary plant-based foods — algae wafers, spirulina tablets, blanched courgette, cucumber, and similar vegetables — should complement the wood. Given the broader Hypostomus cochliodon group biology, heavy protein feeding is not appropriate and may cause metabolic stress over time.

Mating

No specific data on mating behaviour in H. oculeus are available in the sources consulted. Given its placement in Hypostominae and its general Hypostomus biology, courtship likely follows the typical loricariid pattern: males become territorial around preferred refuge sites, and sexually mature individuals are distinguishable by differences in odontode development and body proportions. Beyond these general inferences, data are sparse.

Breeding

No captive breeding of H. oculeus has been documented in the sources available. Whether the species has been successfully spawned in aquaria remains unknown. Cave-spawning with paternal brood guarding is the norm across Hypostomus, and the same is likely true here, but specifics for this species — clutch size, incubation period, fry development — cannot be stated without reliable records. Data are sparse.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus oculeus is infrequently traded and is not a common aquarium fish, though it appears occasionally in specialist imports from Colombia and Ecuador. It is sympatric in the wild with other wood-eating loricariids, suggesting it occupies a genuine xylivore ecological niche rather than being an opportunistic wood-rasp. Accordingly, driftwood must be available in any long-term setup.

Adult size of up to 8.5–10 in TL demands a spacious aquarium of at least 55 US gal, with robust filtration to handle the significant waste production associated with a large wood-rasping catfish. Water chemistry should reflect the soft, slightly acidic conditions of upper Amazonian tributaries: pH 5.5–7.0, temperature in the 75–82 °F range (the warmer end is better supported by regional data). Regular partial water changes and good oxygenation are essential.

The fish should be kept with ample hiding places constructed from driftwood and sturdy rockwork. It is not recommended to house two large males together in a standard home aquarium, as territorial conflicts are likely. Peaceful mid-water community fish from the same biozone — small characins, smaller cichlids tolerant of soft water — are appropriate tankmates. Because captive breeding records are absent, little practical guidance on reproduction in aquaria can be offered.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus oculeus as Data Deficient, with the assessment dated 24 April 2014. This designation reflects insufficient information to determine whether the species is threatened, not a judgement of safety. The remote, forested upper Amazon watersheds it inhabits have seen relatively little ichthyological survey effort, and the species' depth of distribution, population size, and sensitivity to habitat change are all poorly known.

Deforestation in the Colombian and Ecuadorean Amazon continues to accelerate, with consequences for river sedimentation, wood input, and water chemistry — all parameters of relevance to a xylivore specialised on submerged timber. Until adequate survey data exist, the conservation status of H. oculeus must remain uncertain.
