Spatuloricaria phelpsi is a large, spatula-headed whiptail from the Lake Maracaibo basin of Venezuela and Colombia — a distinctive drainage that forms one of South America's most geologically ancient lake systems. At nearly 13.5 in standard length and with a low population resilience rating, it is among the more substantial loricariin whiptails, assessed as Least Concern but deserving of attention as an endemic of a hydrologically unique basin.

Taxonomy & naming

Spatuloricaria phelpsi was described by Leonard Peter Schultz in 1944, with the original description published in the Proceedings of the United States National Museum (volume 94). The type locality is in the Lake Maracaibo drainage of Venezuela. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Spatuloricaria phelpsi Schultz, 1944 as the valid name, with CoF species ID 5943. The species belongs to the genus Spatuloricaria within the subfamily Loricariinae, family Loricariidae.

Ferraaris (2003), in the Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America, confirmed distribution in the Lake Maracaibo basin and maximum standard length of 13.5 in SL. The genus Spatuloricaria is characterised by a markedly depressed head that is spatula-shaped when viewed dorsally — broader anteriorly than posteriorly — which distinguishes it from the more uniformly tapered heads of Loricaria or Rineloricaria. Males develop pronounced hypertrophied odontodes on the head and pectoral regions during the breeding season.

The specific epithet phelpsi honours William Harry Phelps Sr. (1875–1965), an American ornithologist and naturalist who spent much of his life in Venezuela and assembled the largest ornithological collection in the country. Phelps collected extensively across Venezuelan habitats, and the Lake Maracaibo region was within his operational area; Schultz named the species to recognise this contribution to Venezuelan natural history.

Morphology

Spatuloricaria phelpsi is a large whiptail, reaching a maximum of 13.5 in standard length — one of the larger species in its subfamily. The body follows the characteristic loricariin plan: strongly dorsoventrally flattened, encased in overlapping bony scutes along the flanks and dorsum, with a naked or lightly scuted ventral surface. The caudal peduncle is long and slender, and the caudal fin bears filamentous extensions on both lobes.

The head is the most diagnostically important feature of the genus: viewed from above, it is spatulate — broad and rounded anteriorly, narrowing posteriorly — a shape from which both the genus name and the English 'spatula-head whiptail' appellation derive. The subterminal mouth is equipped with fine, multi-cusped teeth suitable for scraping biofilm and soft algae from submerged surfaces and sediment.

Breeding males develop conspicuous odontodes: enlarged, hook-like spines on the interopercular region (cheeks) and along the pectoral fin spines. These odontodes are prominent enough to be visible on the FishBase specimen photograph attributed to Galvis, Mojica & Camargo. Females lack this degree of odontode hypertrophy. FishBase records resilience as Low for this species (population doubling 4.5–14 years), suggesting relatively slow population turnover compared with many other loricariids.

Habitat

Spatuloricaria phelpsi is known from the Lake Maracaibo basin, which straddles the Venezuela–Colombia border in northwestern South America. Lake Maracaibo is one of the world's oldest lakes — geologically ancient — and drains northward through the Maracaibo Strait into the Gulf of Venezuela. Its catchment includes the Sierra de Perijá to the west and the Venezuelan Andes to the east and south, with rivers draining both ranges contributing to the lake.

No specific physico-chemical measurements (temperature, pH, conductivity) for S. phelpsi collection localities appear in the sources available. The Lake Maracaibo basin spans a range of elevations and water types; lowland reaches near the lake are typically warm (around 79–86 °F), with moderate conductivity and variable pH influenced by catchment geology. Rivers entering the lake from the Andes carry varying sediment loads. The species is described as demersal and freshwater; as a large loricariin it is expected to occupy firm substrates — sandy or gravelly riverbeds — with available biofilm and detrital food resources.

The Lake Maracaibo basin is subject to significant human pressure from oil extraction (Maracaibo is one of the world's great oil-producing regions), agricultural runoff, and urban development along the lake shores.

Feeding

Spatuloricaria phelpsi feeds on algae and detritus, as recorded on FishBase (Ref. 26543), with a trophic level of 2.0 — the lowest trophic level designation, indicating a diet almost entirely of plant material and fine organic matter with negligible animal prey component. This is consistent with a scraping and filtering forager: the spatulate head positions the subterminal mouth to sweep across the substrate surface, and the fine teeth rasp biofilm, diatoms, filamentous algae, and fine detrital particles from submerged wood, rock, and sediment.

In the aquarium, S. phelpsi should receive a diet dominated by algae-based sinking foods: algae wafers, spirulina-enriched pellets, and fresh or blanched vegetables including courgette, cucumber, peas, and leafy greens. Access to submerged wood supports biofilm growth and provides additional grazing surface. The species is not considered xylophagous (wood-eating) in the manner of Panaqolus.

Mating

Detailed observations of mating behaviour in S. phelpsi are absent from the published sources available. Based on genus-level and subfamily-level biology, males are territorial and compete using their hypertrophied interopercular and pectoral odontodes in lateral displays and physical sparring. The spatulate head of Spatuloricaria may play a role in combat or display, although this has not been specifically investigated.

The low resilience rating for this species (population doubling time 4.5–14 years) may reflect a relatively long inter-breeding interval or lower reproductive output compared with faster-recovering loricariids — factors that have not been formally studied in this species. Females in condition are expected to show greater body depth and girth than males, particularly across the pelvic region, when ready to spawn.

Breeding

Spatuloricaria phelpsi belongs to a genus in which males are the primary brooding parent. Like other loricariin whiptails, males are expected to guard and care for the egg mass following spawning, either through oral brooding or closely guarding the clutch in a selected substrate position. The precise mode of paternal care — full mouth-brooding, lip-attachment, or substrate-guarding — has not been described in published sources for this species.

No clutch size, incubation period, or fry development data specific to S. phelpsi have been published in sources available here. The species' relatively low resilience rating suggests that reproductive rates are not high, which may make population recovery from disturbance slower than for more fecund loricariids. Captive breeding records, if any exist in the hobby, have not entered the formal or semi-formal literature consulted.

In the aquarium

Spatuloricaria phelpsi is an uncommon species in the ornamental trade; it carries no L-number and the Lake Maracaibo basin is not a primary source of exported aquarium fish. At nearly 13.5 in SL, adults require a large aquarium — a minimum of 71–78.5 in in length — with ample bottom space, a sandy or fine-gravel substrate, and submerged wood and leaf litter to replicate the demersal microhabitat and provide grazing surfaces for biofilm.

Water parameters should reflect the warm, seasonally variable conditions of the Lake Maracaibo lowlands: temperature approximately 75–84 °F, pH near neutral to slightly alkaline, moderate hardness consistent with Andean-influenced water. Strong filtration and regular partial water changes are essential, as large demersal catfishes produce significant waste and are sensitive to accumulated nitrogenous compounds.

Breeding males develop pronounced interopercular odontodes that are visually dramatic and can cause minor abrasion to conspecifics or to soft-bodied tankmates during territorial encounters. Suitable tankmates are large, peaceful mid-water species; smaller or fin-nipping fish should be avoided. The long caudal filaments of Spatuloricaria are vulnerable to nipping and should be monitored.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Spatuloricaria phelpsi as Least Concern on 15 January 2021. The assessment reflects a judgement that available data do not indicate population-level decline meeting threatened thresholds, but the FishBase resilience rating — Low, with population doubling time estimated at 4.5–14 years — indicates this species is not highly productive and may be slower to recover from localised declines than many other loricariids.

The Lake Maracaibo basin, the only known range of S. phelpsi, is one of the most heavily industrialised freshwater systems in South America. Oil extraction has been conducted in and around Lake Maracaibo for over a century, with chronic impacts from spills and infrastructure on lake water quality. Agricultural runoff from both the Venezuelan and Colombian portions of the catchment drives eutrophication and sedimentation. Untreated municipal sewage from the cities of Maracaibo and surrounding towns further degrades water quality. Depletion of dissolved oxygen in stratified areas of the lake has been documented.

While S. phelpsi is not assessed as threatened, the combination of restricted range, low resilience, and severe basin-level stressors warrants monitoring. Updated population surveys and water-quality assessments in the river tributaries supporting this species would provide the data needed for a more robust threat evaluation at the next IUCN review.
