Potamotrygon histrix, the porcupine river stingray, is a cartilaginous fish of the Paraná–Paraguay River basin in South America — not a bony fish but an elasmobranch, a freshwater cousin of the sharks and marine rays, with a skeleton of cartilage and skin studded with tooth-like denticles. Described by Müller and Henle in 1839, it is one of the older named species of the family Potamotrygonidae, the freshwater river stingrays endemic to South American rivers. It is a medium-sized species with a disc width reaching around 15.5–19.5 in, associated with sandy banks and slow tributaries of the southern river systems, and is now assessed as Near Threatened by the IUCN due to ongoing pressures from the ornamental trade, bycatch, and habitat change.

Taxonomy & naming

Potamotrygon histrix was described by Johannes Peter Müller and Friedrich Gustav Jakob Henle in 1839, making it among the earlier members of the Potamotrygonidae to receive a formal scientific name. It is placed in the family Potamotrygonidae, order Myliobatiformes — the stingrays — and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises it as a valid species in the core genus Potamotrygon. These are elasmobranchs: cartilaginous fish whose entire internal skeleton is composed of cartilage rather than bone, kin to the sharks and the marine rays and emphatically not related to any of the bony fishes that make up the rest of the aquarium hobby.

The species has accumulated synonyms over the years, in part because specimens from across the Paraná–Paraguay drainage were sometimes referred to it. A notable clarification came in 2016 when the Rio Negro population long associated with P. histrix was formally described as a distinct species, Potamotrygon wallacei, leaving P. histrix as a name properly applied to the Paraná–Paraguay basin material. The common name "cururu" derives from a Tupi word used in South America and appears in the scientific literature; "porcupine river stingray" is the English trade name.

Morphology

P. histrix has the typical form of its genus: a broad, nearly circular pectoral disc, greatly flattened for a life on the river bottom, with the eyes and paired spiracles set on the dorsal surface and the mouth, nares, and five pairs of gill slits on the underside. The disc width reaches around 15.5 in in published records, with some animals reported to approximately 19.5 in across; the tail adds substantially to total length. Published maximum weight is around 15 kg. The ground colour and patterning of P. histrix is distinctive enough among its relatives to have given rise to the "porcupine" common name, referring to a pattern of scattered, often star-shaped or spiny-looking markings on the dorsal surface.

The tail bears one or more serrated venomous spines near its base, modified dermal denticles sheathed in venom-producing tissue that are shed and regrown periodically; a wound from this spine causes intense pain and can be medically serious. The rest of the skin surface is covered in tiny tooth-like denticles — there are no true scales. Males carry paired claspers, the rod-like copulatory organs formed from the inner margins of the pelvic fins, which make sexing the animal straightforward; females tend to attain larger disc sizes.

Habitat

The porcupine river stingray is endemic to the Paraná–Paraguay River basin, a large southern South American drainage system that runs through parts of Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Argentina before flowing into the Río de la Plata. It is a benthic fish of lowland river habitats, recorded from sandy banks, slow-moving tributaries, and seasonally flooded forest — the kind of soft-bottomed, sheltered environment where it can lie partly buried with only its eyes and spiracles breaking the surface.

Water temperatures in the Paraná–Paraguay system are warmer in the Chaco lowlands and cooler in the southern reaches, with the range recorded for P. histrix cited at 75–79 °F; pH is broadly neutral to mildly acidic (around 6.0–7.0 in the softer reaches), and the system tends toward harder, somewhat more mineralised conditions than the acidic shield rivers further north. Like all potamotrygonids, P. histrix respires by drawing water in through the spiracles while buried — an adaptation that allows it to breathe without lifting its disc off the substrate and disturbing its ambush position.

Feeding

P. histrix is a carnivore and a benthic predator, hunting the invertebrates and small vertebrates of the river bottom. Its prey includes aquatic insect larvae, crustaceans, molluscs, annelid worms, and small fishes, which it locates using both vision and the electroreceptive system of ampullae of Lorenzini — sensory pores concentrated on the underside of the disc that detect the faint bioelectric fields produced by buried prey animals. Once located, the ray pins prey beneath its disc and works it back to the crushing tooth-plates of the jaws.

In captivity it accepts a varied carnivore diet: earthworms, whole prawns and mussel, fish pieces, bloodworm, and similar meaty items offered on or near the bottom. Meals are typically consumed quickly — often within a few minutes — and the ray produces substantial biological waste relative to its body size, which drives the demanding filtration requirements of keeping this species well. Like other rays it may learn to take food from the keeper's hand, an interaction that must be managed with extreme caution given the venomous sting.

Mating

River stingrays reproduce by internal fertilisation, as all elasmobranchs do. A male locates a receptive female and grips her disc margin with his mouth — courtship can be vigorous and males commonly bite the female's pectoral disc, leaving marks that heal over time. He then inserts one of his paired claspers, the rod-like copulatory organs derived from the inner margins of the pelvic fins, to transfer sperm directly into the female's reproductive tract. There is no external spawning, no nest, and no mating territory; fertilisation and the entirety of early development take place inside the female.

Captive reproduction of P. histrix has been documented, and the species is reported to breed in aquaria when conditions are suitable. As with all potamotrygonids there is no pair bond and no further parental investment by the male after mating; the relationship ends at copulation and all subsequent care of the developing embryos falls to the female's physiology.

Breeding

Potamotrygon histrix is viviparous, giving birth to live young rather than laying eggs. After the small initial yolk reserve of each embryo is exhausted, the developing pups are nourished inside the uterus by a secreted histotroph — a protein- and fat-rich "uterine milk" produced by specialised extensions of the uterine wall and taken up directly by the embryos. This matrotrophic histotrophy is the reproductive hallmark of the Potamotrygonidae and allows pups to grow substantially before birth.

Gestation in captivity has been recorded at approximately 9–12 weeks, producing a litter of 1–8 fully formed miniature rays; these are independent and capable of feeding immediately or within days of birth. There is no parental care after birth. The combination of small litter sizes, a gestation measured in months, and the time required to reach sexual maturity means that P. histrix, like all river stingrays, reproduces slowly — a life-history trait that makes any population unable to quickly recover from elevated mortality from fishing, capture for the trade, or habitat loss.

In the aquarium

The porcupine river stingray is kept by specialist ray-keepers but is not a fish for the unprepared. The single most important requirement is floor area: an adult with a 15.5–19.5 in disc needs a tank whose footprint spans several metres in each dimension, measured in square metres rather than litres alone; tall, narrow tanks are inappropriate. The substrate must be a deep bed of soft, fine sand — the ray buries routinely and coarse gravel or bare glass will abrade its disc and stress it chronically. A minimum tank volume of around 130 US gal is sometimes cited for juveniles, but that figure should be understood as an entry point, not a permanent home.

Water quality is the second critical axis. River stingrays are scaleless, with delicate skin and a high metabolic output; they are exquisitely sensitive to ammonia at any detectable concentration and to accumulated nitrate, and they will decline quickly in poor water. Heavy, mature biological filtration and large, frequent water changes are mandatory, not optional. No salt should be added; this is a true freshwater fish. Medications containing copper are acutely toxic, and most other treatments should be used at reduced doses and with caution. Tankmates must be placid, similarly sized, and non-aggressive; fin-nippers or boisterous bottom-dwellers will injure the ray or compete with it for food.

The venomous tail spine is a serious hazard: a stingray wound is intensely painful, may require medical treatment, and in rare cases has caused fatalities in humans. Keepers must develop safe handling practices and be alert when working in the tank. P. histrix is subject to Brazilian export regulations via IBAMA, and no wild-caught freshwater ray species can be legally exported from Brazil; in practice, most animals entering the hobby should be captive-bred stock, which is both more sustainable and better acclimated to aquarium conditions. Many jurisdictions require a permit or prohibit private ownership.

Conservation

Potamotrygon histrix is assessed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List (assessment dated 28 December 2024, criterion A2ce), reflecting evidence of population decline driven by commercial exploitation and habitat degradation. The Paraná–Paraguay basin has undergone substantial modification through dam construction, water abstraction for agriculture, pollution, and the annual flood-pulse disruption that affects floodplain habitats; these changes reduce the sandy, slow-moving habitat that P. histrix depends on.

As with all river stingrays, the slow reproductive rate of P. histrix — small litters, months-long gestation, and late maturity — means that populations recover poorly from elevated removal. Wild individuals have historically entered the ornamental trade, and the species is taken incidentally in fishing gear and killed deliberately out of fear of its sting. Brazil, a significant part of its range, now controls all freshwater ray exports through IBAMA, effectively ending the legal wild trade from Brazilian waters; this is a meaningful protection measure. Several Potamotrygon species are also listed under CITES Appendix III by range states. Continued monitoring of wild populations, enforcement of trade controls, and promotion of captive-bred animals in the aquarium hobby are the practical conservation priorities for this species.
