Taxonomy & naming
Ancistrus cirrhosus was described by Achille Valenciennes in 1836, in the monumental work Voyage dans l'Amérique méridionale by Alcide d'Orbigny, from specimens collected in the Paraná River basin of South America. Catalog of Fishes records the original combination as Hypostomus cirrhosus; the species was later transferred to the genus Ancistrus, so its authority is written in parentheses — (Valenciennes, 1836) — to reflect the genus change. The species epithet cirrhosus derives from the Latin cirrhus (a curl, a lock of hair, or a tendril), a reference to the fleshy tentacles on the face. The name has also appeared in combination with Chaetostomus in the older literature; listed synonyms include Chaetostomus cirrhosus maculatus and Hypostomus cirrhosus.
The genus Ancistrus was erected by Kner in 1854, with the name from Greek agkistron (hook), referring to the interopercular odontodes — recurved, hook-like spine-groups on either side of the head that the fish can evert defensively. Ancistrus belongs to subfamily Hypostominae of the family Loricariidae, and FishBase confirms A. cirrhosus in Hypostominae.
The taxonomy of Ancistrus as a whole is in a difficult state. The genus contains well over 100 nominal species and — crucially for hobbyists — many commonly traded 'bristlenose plecos' are undescribed forms or poorly characterised species that have accumulated under the informal banner 'Ancistrus sp.' FishBase notes explicitly that 'the numerous references must be taken with care until a revision of species with designation of a neotype.' The true A. cirrhosus is almost certainly the Paraná-basin species; the widespread aquarium bristlenose that has been captive-bred for decades likely represents one or more distinct species (often tentatively labelled Ancistrus sp. 'albino', Ancistrus sp. 'longfin', and so forth). Hobbyists and retailers who label their bristlenose fish as 'Ancistrus cirrhosus' are following a reasonable convention, but they should understand it is a shorthand for the Ancistrus sp. complex rather than a precise identification. A comprehensive revision of the genus is needed to resolve this.
Morphology
Ancistrus cirrhosus reaches a maximum size of approximately 3.5 in SL according to FishBase; PlanetCatfish records 3.5 in SL. The captive-bred bristlenose that circulates in the hobby typically grows to 4–5 in TL, perhaps slightly larger for well-fed females.
The body is broadly typical of the Loricariidae: dorso-ventrally flattened, fully armoured in bony scutes arranged in longitudinal rows, with a large sucker-disc mouth bearing spatulate teeth suited to rasping algae and biofilm. The head is broad and the eyes relatively small and set high. Coloration in the wild species is brown to grey-brown with scattered pale spots or a mottled pattern; the many captive-bred morphs include albino (yellowish-white with pink eyes), 'super red' (orange-red), 'longfin' (with dramatically extended fin rays), and combinations of these traits.
The genus's most famous feature is the facial tentacles — fleshy, soft, unbranched or branched protrusions that sprout from the snout and around the front of the head in mature males. PlanetCatfish notes: 'Mature males develop soft tentacles on the head and while sometimes females also do, it is never to the grand extent of those found on that of the conspecific male.' In large, old males these tentacles can become spectacular, resembling a cluster of small worms or antlers. They are unique within the Loricariidae to the genus Ancistrus and serve as the definitive identification feature for any species in this group. The function of the tentacles is uncertain; suggestions include mimicry of invertebrate food items to attract females, or a role in tactile communication within caves.
Habitat
The true Ancistrus cirrhosus (sensu stricto) is native to the Paraná River basin of South America, including parts of Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and southern Brazil — the La Plata system. FishBase records its distribution as the Paraná River basin. This is a large, slow-to-moderately flowing river system with turbid to moderately clear water over gravel, sand, and rock substrates; it is quite different from the fast Amazonian torrents where many other loricariids are found.
FishBase records the species from 'streams, from highly turbid standing water over a heavy clay substratum to free flowing clear water over gravel' — underscoring the ecological flexibility of the species, which occupies a wide range of flow regimes and water types. Water temperatures in the Paraná basin range seasonally from around 64–82 °F; the fish are notably cold-tolerant compared with many Amazonian relatives.
The captive-bred 'bristlenose' of the hobby, which may represent one or more distinct Amazonian Ancistrus species, is equally flexible in practice — a property that has made it exceptionally easy to maintain and breed in aquaria. These fish tolerate a broad pH range (6.0–7.8), moderate hardness, and temperatures from about 68–82 °F. They are facultative air-breathers, surfacing occasionally to gulp atmospheric air in warm or oxygen-depleted water.
Feeding
Ancistrus cirrhosus is a primary aufwuchs grazer. Aufwuchs (from German: that which grows upon) is the community of algae, diatoms, bacteria, biofilm, microinvertebrates, and organic detritus that coats submerged hard surfaces in rivers. The spatulate multicuspid teeth of Ancistrus are well adapted to rasping this material from rocks, wood, and plant stems.
In aquaria, Ancistrus species are indispensable aufwuchs consumers: they graze algae from glass, rocks, wood, and broad-leaved plants with evident enthusiasm, and are among the most effective biological algae-control animals in the hobby. PlanetCatfish recommends feeding 'mainly on vegetarian foods': algae wafers and spirulina-based sinking pellets form the dietary backbone, supplemented with fresh or blanched vegetables (courgette/zucchini, cucumber, spinach, lettuce, green beans, carrot). A small amount of meaty food — bloodworm, brine shrimp, or sinking carnivore wafers — provides protein variety but should not dominate the diet.
Driftwood is often recommended in bristlenose tanks. While Ancistrus is not an obligate wood-eater in the manner of Panaque (which relies on bacteria in its gut to digest cellulose), it does rasp and ingest some wood, possibly for the microbial communities living within it. Whether driftwood is nutritionally essential for A. cirrhosus sensu stricto is unclear, but it is widely reported to benefit bristlenose generally.
Mating
Ancistrus cirrhosus is a substrate-spawning cave-breeder with strong sexual dimorphism in the spawning system: the male selects, defends, and maintains a cave, then courts females into it to deposit eggs. The male's facial bristles and broad head are thought to be sexually selected traits used in male–male competition and female choice, though direct experimental evidence is limited.
In courtship, a receptive female approaches the male's cave and the male displays at the entrance. The male may nudge the female repeatedly; if she accepts, she enters and spawns inside. Unlike the corydoradine T-position (where the female forms a basket with her pelvic fins), spawning in Ancistrus takes place within the enclosed cave with eggs deposited directly onto the cave wall or ceiling. The male remains inside with the eggs immediately after spawning.
Multiple females may spawn with the same male in succession, potentially producing overlapping clutches if the cave is large enough. Males can be aggressive toward each other over cave ownership, especially where suitable sites are scarce.
Breeding
Ancistrus cirrhosus — or more accurately, the hobbyist 'bristlenose' Ancistrus sp. — is among the easiest loricariids to breed in captivity, a principal reason for its global popularity. PlanetCatfish lists four breeding reports specifically for A. cirrhosus, though the total captive-breeding literature for the genus Ancistrus in aquaria is vast.
After spawning, the male remains in the cave to guard and aerate the eggs, fanning them continuously with his pectoral fins and tail to maintain oxygen flow. Eggs are orange-yellow to amber, adhesive, and deposited in a tight cluster on the cave wall or ceiling. Clutch sizes are typically 20–150 eggs depending on the female's size and condition. Incubation takes roughly 5–10 days at 75–79 °F; at higher temperatures incubation is faster.
The male continues to guard the larvae after hatching until the yolk sac is absorbed (a further 5–8 days). The fry emerge from the cave as free-swimming juveniles and are immediately self-sufficient feeders on algae and biofilm. They accept fine sinking powder foods, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables from first feeding. The male may spawn again within weeks if additional ripe females are present.
For breeders, a simple PVC or terracotta cave of appropriate diameter (internal width just comfortable for one adult fish), warm clean water with weekly partial water changes, and a good algae-heavy diet for the female are usually sufficient to induce spawning. Bristlenose are prolific in captivity; a productive pair can produce hundreds of fry per year.
In the aquarium
The bristlenose pleco is justifiably one of the first fish recommendations for a beginner wanting an algae-cleaning catfish. Unlike the 'common pleco' (Hypostomus plecostomus or, more likely, Pterygoplichthys species) that outgrows most home aquaria within a year or two, bristlenose remain small — 4–5 in TL — and are genuinely manageable in tanks of 15 US gal and upwards.
They are peaceful toward most tankmates except other males of their own species; males in the same tank may fight over caves, so provide one cave per male or keep a single male. Females and males of different sizes coexist reasonably well. The species is compatible with most tropical community fish, cichlids of similar temperament, and other loricariids, as long as competition for caves is managed.
Caves are important: like all Ancistrus species, the bristlenose is a cave-obligate for spawning and for security during daylight hours. Provide at least one cave per fish, oriented horizontally. PVC pipe sections, terracotta flower-pot halves, commercially made pleco tubes, or slate-built caves all work. The fish is primarily nocturnal but becomes more active during the day when kept in dim conditions or a well-planted tank with significant cover.
Water requirements are flexible: the captive-bred bristlenose tolerates pH 6.0–8.0, temperatures 68–82 °F (with 72–79 °F optimal), and a wide hardness range. Good filtration and regular water changes are necessary — bristlenose are prodigious producers of organic waste relative to their size. Avoid very high temperatures; at 82–86 °F, growth is faster but lifespan may be shortened.
Hobbyists should be honest about identification: if the bristlenose in their tank was bought from a typical retail shop, it is almost certainly not Ancistrus cirrhosus but an undescribed or trade-Ancistrus. This does not affect care requirements but it should inform the scientific claims attached to it.
Conservation
Ancistrus cirrhosus is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List, last evaluated in September 2020. The species has a substantial distribution in the Paraná River basin, one of South America's major river systems, and faces no acute species-level threat at present.
The broader Ancistrus sp. complex traded in the hobby is overwhelmingly captive-bred and has been for decades; there is no significant wild-collection pressure on the aquarium trade for 'bristlenose plecos.' Wild populations of various Ancistrus species in the Amazon and La Plata face the broad pressures of deforestation, agricultural runoff, river damming, and water pollution that threaten freshwater biodiversity across South America.
The taxonomic uncertainty around the genus is itself a conservation concern: until the full Ancistrus species complex is revised and named species are given formal range descriptions, it is difficult to identify which populations (if any) are at particular risk. Several undescribed Ancistrus species may occupy narrow endemic ranges and could be threatened without this being captured in any current assessment.
