Potamotrygon schuhmacheri is a small, poorly known freshwater stingray of the Paraná–Paraguay basin in Argentina and Paraguay — one of the smallest members of its genus, reaching a disc width of roughly 10 in. Like all members of the family Potamotrygonidae, it is not a bony fish but a cartilaginous one: an elasmobranch, kin to the sharks and the marine rays of the sea rather than to the cichlids or tetras that share South American rivers with it. Known primarily from a handful of specimens collected from dark channels and sandy substrates in Argentina and Paraguay, it remains so rarely encountered that the IUCN assessed it Data Deficient in 2004 — the science simply lacks the population data to say how it is faring.

Taxonomy & naming

Potamotrygon schuhmacheri was described by Castex in 1964, with type specimens deposited at the Museo Provincial de Ciencias Naturales in Santa Fe, Argentina, and at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) in Washington. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) places it in the genus Potamotrygon, family Potamotrygonidae, order Myliobatiformes — the stingrays.

Potamotrygonidae are elasmobranchs: cartilaginous fish whose skeleton is composed of cartilage rather than bone. They are more closely related to the sharks and to the marine stingrays than to any bony fish. The family comprises a group of stingrays that became isolated in South American fresh water — geologically recent isolation given the family's marine origins — and diversified into the many species of rivers and floodplains recognised today. Potamotrygon is the largest genus in the family and its core.

The specific epithet schuhmacheri honours a personal namesake of the describer; the derivation is not a descriptive Latin or Greek term. The species has no widely established common name in the aquarium trade, partly because it is rarely collected and seldom offered commercially.

Morphology

P. schuhmacheri has the body plan shared by all river stingrays: a rounded, nearly circular pectoral disc — flattened for benthic life — with the eyes and spiracles set on the dorsal surface and the mouth, nostrils, and gill slits on the underside. A maximum disc width of approximately 10 in makes it one of the smallest species in the genus, compact enough to bury completely in sandy substrates.

The tail bears one or more serrated venomous spines near the base — modified dermal denticles sheathed in venom-producing tissue that are periodically shed and replaced. The skin is covered in tooth-like dermal denticles rather than scales; there are no true scales anywhere on the body. This scaleless skin is thin and sensitive, which has direct consequences for husbandry.

As in other Potamotrygon, males bear paired claspers — rod-like copulatory organs formed from the inner edges of the pelvic fins — making sex determination straightforward in adults. Females are typically the larger sex, a pattern common across the family. Detailed colour pattern data for P. schuhmacheri are sparse in the published record; the species has been noted from dark river channels in Argentina, but no systematic description of its dorsal patterning has been widely circulated.

Habitat

The type locality of Potamotrygon schuhmacheri is the Río Colastiné Sur, a tributary of the Paraná River in Santa Fe Province, Argentina. The species is known from the Paraná–Paraguay basin across Argentina and Paraguay, with the possibility of occurrence into southern Brazil. GBIF records indicate a fragmented range and suggest a preference for dark channels within the river system.

Like other Potamotrygon, P. schuhmacheri favours slow to moderately flowing lowland waters over sandy or muddy substrates, where it lies partly buried with only its eyes and spiracles exposed. It breathes by drawing water in through the spiracles atop the head — the spiracles, paired openings located just behind the eyes, allow the ray to respire while buried and while feeding, without drawing substrate-laden water across the gill slits. The species is a true freshwater fish; no occurrence in brackish or marine environments has been recorded.

The Paraná–Paraguay system is warm, moderately mineralised, and near-neutral — distinct from the soft, acidic blackwaters of Amazonian shield rivers. Species-specific temperature and pH data for P. schuhmacheri have not been published, but the wider basin supports the family at roughly 75–82 °F (75–82 °F) and a pH around neutral.

Feeding

Potamotrygon schuhmacheri, like its relatives, is a benthic carnivore. River stingrays detect buried prey using the ampullae of Lorenzini — a network of electrosensory pores scattered across the underside of the disc that sense the faint bioelectric fields generated by hidden invertebrates and small fishes. Prey is pinned against the substrate by the disc and manoeuvred to the crushing tooth-plates of the mouth.

No species-specific dietary studies for P. schuhmacheri appear in the literature, but the feeding biology of the genus is reasonably well characterised: the diet consists of benthic invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, crustaceans, worms, small molluscs — supplemented by small fishes. The small disc width of this species likely constrains prey size relative to larger Potamotrygon such as P. motoro.

In captivity, the family generally accepts earthworms, prawn, mussel, and similar meaty foods offered on the substrate. A small species like P. schuhmacheri will feed at the scale appropriate to its size, but the metabolic load — and thus the filtration burden — is proportionally real even for a compact ray.

Mating

River stingrays reproduce by internal fertilisation, as all elasmobranchs do. Fertilisation is achieved when the male inserts one of his paired claspers into the female's cloaca to transfer sperm; courtship in Potamotrygon typically involves the male pursuing the female and gripping the disc margin with his mouth, which can leave heal-over bite marks on the female's disc edge.

There is no nest, no spawning site, and no broadcast of eggs into the water: the entire process of fertilisation and development is internal. For P. schuhmacheri specifically, courtship and mating behaviour have not been described in published studies; the reproductive biology is inferred from the family pattern.

The slow pace of the reproductive cycle — small litters, long gestation — means that pairs of river stingrays do not produce offspring quickly even when conditions are right, and there is no pair bond persisting after mating. The male's contribution ends at fertilisation; all subsequent development occurs inside the female.

Breeding

Potamotrygon schuhmacheri is viviparous, as all members of Potamotrygonidae are. After the small yolk supply of the egg is exhausted, the developing embryos are nourished inside the uterus by a protein- and fat-rich uterine secretion — "uterine milk" or histotroph — taken up through structures associated with the uterine wall. This matrotrophic histotrophy allows the pups to grow substantially before birth, and is described for the family in the reproductive literature.

The specific litter size for P. schuhmacheri has not been published; across the genus, litters are small — commonly only a few pups, and seldom exceeding a dozen even in larger species. Gestation lasts several months and is tied to the hydrological cycle of the river system. Pups are born as fully formed miniature rays capable of independent existence within days of birth; there is no parental care after delivery.

This slow reproductive rate — late maturity, small litters, long gestation — is a critical vulnerability for the family when populations face sustained harvest pressure. Even modest removal of adults, whether for the ornamental trade, for food, or through bycatch, can outpace a population's capacity to replace itself.

In the aquarium

Potamotrygon schuhmacheri is rarely available in the aquarium trade; its small disc width of approximately 10 in makes it theoretically less demanding on tank space than the largest Potamotrygon species, but it shares all the fundamental husbandry requirements of its family. A wide-footprint aquarium with substantial floor area — not a tall, narrow tank — is the correct form factor: stingrays live on the substrate and need space to turn and bury, not vertical swimming room. A deep bed of fine, soft sand is mandatory; coarse or sharp gravel abrades the disc skin and introduces infection risk.

Water quality is non-negotiable. Scaleless with thin skin and a high sensitivity to its own waste products, P. schuhmacheri cannot tolerate accumulated ammonia or nitrate at the levels many bony-fish keepers accept. Heavy biological filtration, large frequent water changes, and zero salt are the baseline. Copper-based medications are toxic to elasmobranchs and must never be used. Tankmates should be peaceful species that will not nip at the disc or compete aggressively at the substrate.

The venomous tail spine is a real hazard. Stingray wounds from freshwater rays are intensely painful and can require medical attention; keepers must handle these fish with appropriate caution and should be aware that possession and keeping of live freshwater stingrays is regulated or prohibited in several jurisdictions. Captive-bred specimens, when obtainable, are strongly preferred over wild-caught animals, particularly given the conservation concerns attached to the family.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Potamotrygon schuhmacheri as Data Deficient in 2004, reflecting how little is known: the species is rarely collected, distribution data are fragmentary, and no population trends have been established. Type specimens were described from the Río Colastiné Sur in Santa Fe Province, Argentina, and subsequent records are sparse. The lack of data should not be mistaken for abundance — Data Deficient is a statement about knowledge gaps, not population health.

The pressures on the species are those affecting the whole family and the Paraná–Paraguay basin: commercial and subsistence fishing (stingrays are caught for food and for skins, and are frequently killed on sight because of the sting), collection for the ornamental aquarium trade, and large-scale river modification. The Paraná is one of South America's most hydrologically engineered rivers, with major dams and impoundments that alter floodplain dynamics and fragmented connectivity. Mercury contamination from mining is less acute in the Paraná–Paraguay than in parts of Amazonia, but broader water quality degradation from agriculture and urbanisation is a documented concern.

Several Potamotrygon species are listed under CITES Appendix III by Brazil and Colombia, which requires export permits and documentation. Brazil has regulated the commercial collection and export of freshwater stingrays through IBAMA quotas since 1990. The slow reproductive biology of the family — small litters, long gestation, late maturity — means that sustainable harvest quotas must be conservative, and that any population reduced by heavy collection or bycatch will recover very slowly. Better survey data on P. schuhmacheri's actual distribution and abundance would be a prerequisite for any meaningful reassessment.
