Potamotrygon magdalenae, the Magdalena river stingray, is the only freshwater stingray known from the Magdalena River system of Colombia — a geographically isolated basin west of the Andes where the rest of its family never established a foothold. Like all its kin it is not a bony fish but a cartilaginous one, a true elasmobranch whose skeleton is formed entirely of cartilage and whose nearest relatives are the sharks and the rays of the sea rather than any creature in the rest of this atlas. It is a bottom-dweller that buries in sand, detects prey through electrosense, bears live young, and defends itself with a venomous serrated tail spine. Endemic to a single river drainage in a heavily modified landscape, it is poorly documented by science — its disc width and litter size remain imprecisely known — and the pressures of habitat loss, dams, and limited range have earned it a Near Threatened listing on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Potamotrygon magdalenae was described by Auguste Duméril in 1865 and is placed in the family Potamotrygonidae, order Myliobatiformes, by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences). Potamotrygonidae is a family of exclusively South American freshwater stingrays that diverged from marine ancestors — most likely stock related to the whiptail stingrays (Dasyatidae) — after entering freshwater via the Atlantic coast, probably during periods of ancient continental flooding. The genus Potamotrygon is the largest of the family and encompasses the great majority of its species diversity.

These animals are elasmobranchs: their skeleton is wholly cartilaginous, and they share their basic body plan and reproductive strategy with the sharks and the marine rays rather than with any of the bony fishes (Osteichthyes) elsewhere in this atlas. The epithet magdalenae is a Latinised genitive referring to the Río Magdalena, the Colombian river where Duméril's type specimens were collected. Unlike most Potamotrygon, which inhabit the Amazon or Orinoco drainages on the east side of the Andes, P. magdalenae is an Andean-isolated endemic — its ancestor presumably colonised the Magdalena basin at a time when the river had a different connection to the broader South American drainage network, and it has been separated from its congeners long enough to be recognised as a distinct species.

Morphology

Potamotrygon magdalenae has the characteristic form of its genus: a rounded, nearly circular pectoral disc, strongly flattened for life on the substrate, with the eyes and paired spiracles positioned on the dorsal surface of the head. The mouth, nostrils, and five pairs of gill slits are located on the ventral surface. The tail is whip-like and bears one or more serrated venomous spines near its base — modified dermal denticles enclosed in venom-producing integumentary sheaths, shed and regrown periodically. The skin is covered throughout in small tooth-like denticles rather than scales.

Precise disc-width figures for the species are sparsely documented in the primary literature, reflecting how poorly studied this endemic remains. Sexual dimorphism follows the family pattern: males possess a pair of claspers — rod-like copulatory organs formed from the modified inner edges of the pelvic fins — and tend to be smaller than adult females. The dorsal colouration and precise pattern of P. magdalenae are inadequately photographed in published sources, but the genus typically shows a combination of a brownish or greyish disc with darker or paler patterning; no definitive description of the species-specific pattern is available in the sources underlying this article.

Habitat

The Magdalena River is the principal drainage of interior Colombia, running northward between the Cordillera Central and the Cordillera Oriental of the Andes before emptying into the Caribbean. It is a warm, lowland river in its lower and middle reaches, carrying moderately turbid water with near-neutral to slightly acidic pH and soft to moderate mineral content — broadly comparable to Andean-fed Amazonian rivers rather than the extremely soft blackwater of the Guiana Shield tributaries. Potamotrygon magdalenae inhabits the sandy and silty margins, floodplain lakes, and slower side channels of this system, where it lies partially buried in fine sediment.

Like all members of its family it breathes by drawing water in through the spiracles on top of the head — an adaptation that allows it to respire while buried on the bottom, with the ventral gill slits sealed against the substrate. The Magdalena basin has been extensively modified by agriculture, urbanisation, deforestation, and damming, making it one of the more degraded large river systems in South America, which is a significant concern for a ray with nowhere else to go.

Feeding

Potamotrygon magdalenae is a benthic carnivore, hunting invertebrates and small vertebrates on and within the soft substrate. Like all Potamotrygonidae it uses a well-developed electrosensory system — the ampullae of Lorenzini, a network of pore-like electroreceptive organs distributed over the ventral disc surface — to detect the faint bioelectric fields emitted by buried prey, allowing it to locate animals invisible to sight or smell. Once over its target it pins prey against the bottom with its disc and draws it to the crushing molariform tooth-plates in the jaw.

Natural prey in the Magdalena system is not well documented specifically for this species, but the genus as a whole takes aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, molluscs, and small fish where available. In captivity, rays of this genus accept earthworms, prawn, mussel, pieces of fish fillet, and similar meaty items delivered to the substrate; feeding by the keeper should be managed carefully given the venomous sting on the tail.

Mating

River stingrays reproduce by internal fertilisation, as do all elasmobranchs. A male locates a receptive female and grips the edge of her disc with his mouth, manoeuvring alongside her so that one of his paired claspers can be inserted to transfer sperm into the female's cloaca. Courtship and mating can be vigorous — males commonly bite at the female's disc margin — and the bites leave temporary marks that heal over subsequent weeks. The encounter is relatively brief; there is no pair bond, no shared territory, and no prolonged association between the animals.

The reproductive biology of P. magdalenae specifically has not been studied in detail in the published literature, but all members of the family Potamotrygonidae are known to breed this way, and the mating mechanics are consistent across the genus. Fertilisation is internal, and all subsequent development takes place inside the female.

Breeding

Potamotrygon magdalenae is viviparous, giving birth to fully formed live young rather than laying eggs — a trait shared by the entire family Potamotrygonidae. After fertilisation, the embryos initially draw on a small yolk supply, but once that is exhausted they are sustained throughout the remainder of gestation by a protein- and fat-rich secretion produced by specialised extensions of the uterine wall. This material — called histotroph or colloquially "uterine milk" — is taken up directly by the developing pups, making the species matrothically histotrophic, a form of viviparity found across the family.

Litter size is small — estimated at perhaps one to four pups for this species, consistent with the broader pattern in moderate-sized Potamotrygon — and gestation lasts several months. The pups are born as miniature, independently functioning rays. There is no parental care after birth; the mother's investment is complete at delivery. This slow reproductive pace — small litters, long gestation, and the late age at sexual maturity typical of elasmobranchs — means that wild populations of P. magdalenae can sustain only limited mortality before declining, a conservation concern for a species limited to a single, heavily modified river basin.

In the aquarium

Potamotrygon magdalenae is rarely encountered in the ornamental trade compared with the widespread P. motoro or the boldly patterned species of the Xingu, a consequence of both its narrow range and the regulatory framework governing Colombian wildlife exports. Any specimen in the hobby is likely to be wild-caught and should be handled with the full suite of precautions applicable to all river stingrays: quarantine, close observation for parasites (these rays harbour their own specialised elasmobrach-specific pathogens quite different from bony fish diseases), and immediate professional veterinary attention for any sting injury.

The care requirements follow those of the genus: an extremely large, wide-footprint aquarium (floor area measured in square metres, several times the disc width in both length and width); a deep bed of soft, fine sand for burying; and water quality maintained at near-zero ammonia, very low nitrate, and no salt. Powerful biological filtration and large, regular water changes are essential — these are scaleless animals with thin, delicate skin that produces a heavy waste load and is acutely sensitive to its own pollution. Copper-based medications are toxic and must never be used; all medications should be researched for elasmobranch safety before administration. Tankmates must be peaceful and not inclined to nip at the disc. The venomous tail spine constitutes a genuine medical hazard, making these fish unsuitable for households with children and illegal to keep without permits in several jurisdictions. Captive-bred individuals are strongly preferred if available.

Conservation

Potamotrygon magdalenae is endemic to the Magdalena River system of Colombia and has no other range to fall back on. The Magdalena basin is one of the most human-modified large rivers in South America: it is heavily dammed (the dam at El Quimbo and the Betania reservoir among others block migration corridors and alter the hydrology of large sections of the river), its floodplains have been converted to agriculture and cattle pasture at very high rates, and the river receives pollution from urban areas, mining, and agrochemical runoff across much of its length. These pressures directly degrade the sandy, slow-water habitats in which the ray lives.

The species is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, reflecting the pressures described above rather than any assurance of stability — for a narrow-range endemic confined to a single degraded basin, Near Threatened is a meaningful warning. The slow reproductive pace of the family (small litters, months-long gestation, late sexual maturity) means that even moderate levels of bycatch, targeted harvest for food or skin, or killing out of fear because of the sting can depress populations faster than they recover. Better baseline survey data, assessment of population trends, and habitat management within the Magdalena system remain pressing needs. Any trade in this species should be approached with caution given its restricted single-basin range and Near Threatened status.
