Taxonomy & naming
Potamotrygon ocellata was described by Engelhardt in 1912 and is placed in the genus Potamotrygon, family Potamotrygonidae, order Myliobatiformes. Potamotrygonidae is a monophyletic family of wholly freshwater rays confined to the rivers of South America, and Potamotrygon is its largest and most species-rich genus. These are elasmobranchs — cartilaginous fish whose skeleton is composed of cartilage rather than bone — placing them in the class Chondrichthyes alongside the sharks and marine rays, and wholly apart from the bony fishes (Osteichthyes) that make up every other family on this site.
The species sits in a taxonomically difficult corner of the genus. FishBase notes it as tentatively valid on the basis of a single specimen with slight coloration differences from closely related rays, and it has at times been treated as a synonym of Potamotrygon motoro. Modern molecular studies have established that what was long called P. motoro is in fact a species complex containing multiple distinct lineages, and P. ocellata is retained as a separate species within that complex pending molecular confirmation. No molecular data specific to this species are yet available. The type locality is the Pedreira River, south of Mexiana Island, in the state of Pará, Brazil.
The species epithet ocellata is Latin for 'furnished with eyes' or 'ocellated', referring to the eye-like spot markings (ocelli) on the disc — a common naming theme in Potamotrygon, where several species carry ocellate or spotted patterns.
Morphology
Potamotrygon ocellata has the characteristic body plan of its family: a rounded, nearly circular pectoral disc, dorso-ventrally flattened for a life spent on the substrate, with the eyes and paired spiracles positioned on the upper surface and the mouth, nostrils, and five pairs of gill slits on the underside. The maximum recorded disc width is 8 in — making this a small species by the standards of the genus — and total length including the tail is considerably greater.
The original description distinguishes the species by its coloration, described as red-blotched markings on the disc; it is this patterning that prompted both the species name and the vernacular 'red-blotched river stingray'. However, because the taxon is known from extremely limited material, a full morphological description is not available, and colouration-based distinctions within Potamotrygon are notoriously unreliable given high individual and regional variation in other members of the genus.
The tail bears one or more serrated venomous spines near its base — modified dermal denticles enveloped in venom-producing tissue, periodically shed and regrown. These are a defensive structure and an injury risk to anyone handling the animal. The skin is covered in tiny tooth-like denticles rather than true scales. Males possess paired claspers — rod-like copulatory organs derived from the inner margins of the pelvic fins — by which sex can be readily determined; females of most Potamotrygon grow larger than males at maturity.
Habitat
The known distribution of Potamotrygon ocellata is narrow: FishBase lists it from the Pedreira River system and the area south of Mexiana Island in the state of Pará, Brazil, placing it in the lower Amazon basin drainage. Mexiana Island is a large Amazon delta island in the Marajó Archipelago, and the Pedreira River is a river system draining into the delta region — low-lying, tropical, freshwater habitat.
As a benthopelagic species it occupies the bottom and lower water column of rivers, likely resting partly buried in soft sediment — sand or fine mud — as all members of its family do. It draws water in through the spiracles on top of the head (rather than over the mouth) to irrigate the gills while buried, allowing it to respire without emerging from the substrate. The warm, tropical, freshwater character of the lower Amazon basin suggests conditions typical for the genus: slow to moderate current, sandy or muddy margins, and warm, relatively soft freshwater.
Beyond this very limited distributional data, the habitat requirements of P. ocellata specifically have not been documented in the available literature, and information on its depth preferences, seasonal movements, or micro-habitat use is absent from current sources.
Feeding
No specific feeding data are published for Potamotrygon ocellata. The feeding biology of the genus as a whole, however, is well understood from better-studied members, and P. ocellata, as a benthic ray occupying riverine habitats, would be expected to share the same general strategy.
Potamotrygon species are benthic carnivores that hunt bottom-living invertebrates and small fish. Prey is detected using the ampullae of Lorenzini — a dense array of electroreceptive pores on the ventral disc surface that sense the faint bioelectric fields emitted by buried or sheltering prey. The ray pins prey against the substrate with the leading edge of its disc and manoeuvres it back to crushing tooth-plates in the jaws. Prey across the genus typically includes aquatic insect larvae, crustaceans, molluscs, annelid worms, and opportunistically small fishes. In the aquarium, members of the genus are fed a meaty diet of earthworms, prawn, mussel, and whole frozen marine and freshwater foods offered on or near the tank floor.
Mating
Like all elasmobranchs, Potamotrygon ocellata reproduces by internal fertilisation. A male approaches and grips the female's disc, typically biting at its margin, and uses one of his paired claspers — rod-like organs formed from the inner edge of the pelvic fins and unique to male cartilaginous fish — to deliver sperm directly into the female's cloaca. There is no external spawning, no nest, and no eggs deposited in the environment; fertilisation is entirely internal from the outset.
Courtship in Potamotrygon species can be persistent and physically demanding on the female; male bite marks along the disc margins are a common finding in both wild-caught and aquarium animals and heal readily. The relationship between the sexes is brief and non-bonding — after mating the male takes no further role, and the female carries the developing young alone. No specific mating observations exist for P. ocellata in the literature, but the mechanism is uniform across the family and is not in doubt.
Breeding
Potamotrygon ocellata is viviparous — it gives birth to live, fully formed young — as are all members of the family Potamotrygonidae. After internal fertilisation, the small egg yolk is consumed early in development, and the embryos are then sustained inside the uterus by a protein- and fat-rich secretion called histotroph, informally 'uterine milk', produced by specialised cells of the uterine wall and ingested directly by the developing pups. This mode of nourishment is matrotrophic histotrophy and is the reproductive hallmark of the family.
Gestation spans several months, during which pups grow from tiny embryos to miniature rays capable of independent life. At birth they are fully formed, venomous (the sting spine is present from birth), and immediately self-sufficient — the mother provides no care after delivery. Litter size across the genus is small, commonly just a few pups per female, though larger species can produce somewhat larger litters.
No reproductive data specific to P. ocellata are available; FishBase lists its reproductive biology as unknown. The slow reproductive rate of the genus — small litters, long gestation, and late sexual maturity — means that populations recover slowly from exploitation and are intrinsically vulnerable to overharvest.
In the aquarium
Potamotrygon ocellata is rarely if ever offered in the aquarium trade as a named species; where it appears it would most likely be traded under a generic 'Amazon ray' label or confused with related small Potamotrygon. As a small species — maximum disc width around 8 in — its adult footprint is considerably more manageable than the large members of the genus, but the fundamental demands of river stingray husbandry apply regardless of size.
The tank must be wide rather than tall, with a floor area large enough for the animal to turn freely and extend its tail without restriction; a deep bed of fine, smooth sand is essential since the ray buries regularly and coarse substrate abrades the disc. Filtration must be powerful and water changes large and frequent: river stingrays are scaleless, with thin, delicate skin and a high metabolic rate, and they are exquisitely sensitive to ammonia and elevated nitrate — their own waste output can harm them in an under-maintained system. No salt, no copper-based medications. Tankmates must be chosen with extreme care; fin-nippers and aggressive bottom fish are entirely unsuitable.
The venomous tail spine is a genuine hazard. A Potamotrygon wound delivers intense, burning pain that can persist for hours and may require medical attention. These animals should never be kept in households where children or unsupervised adults may reach into the tank. Legal status varies by jurisdiction and should be checked before purchase. Captive-bred specimens are strongly preferred over wild-caught, both on welfare and conservation grounds.
Conservation
Potamotrygon ocellata is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (2023), reflecting the paucity of information about the species rather than an absence of concern. It is known from very limited material — in essence a single original specimen — and has no published population data, range surveys, or trend information. This near-total absence of baseline data means its actual status could range from common and overlooked to genuinely rare; no inference is possible from what is currently available.
The species' apparent narrow range — the Pedreira River and the area south of Mexiana Island in the Amazon delta — would, if confirmed, make it a range-restricted endemic. In such cases, even modest local pressures can have disproportionate population impacts. The pressures facing Potamotrygonidae across South America — collection for the ornamental trade, incidental capture in food fisheries, deliberate killing because of the sting, habitat degradation, dam construction, and mercury contamination from gold mining — are well documented, and a narrow-range species is inherently more exposed to any of them than a widespread one.
Brazil regulates the export of freshwater stingrays through IBAMA's quota system for the ornamental trade, and Potamotrygonidae as a whole has attracted CITES attention because of trade volumes across the genus. Given the lack of data, the priority for P. ocellata is fundamental: survey work to establish whether the species is real and distinct, where it actually occurs, and in what numbers. Until that work is done, precautionary management and preference for captive-bred animals in the trade are the most defensible positions.
