Potamotrygon orbignyi, the smooth back river stingray, is a flat, disc-shaped cartilaginous fish — not a bony fish at all, but an elasmobranch, a close relative of the sharks and marine rays — that glides over the sandy floors of the Amazon and Orinoco river systems. Described by Castelnau in 1855, it is one of the smaller members of the family Potamotrygonidae, the South American freshwater stingrays, a group that colonised fresh water millions of years ago and has never returned to the sea. It carries the family's characteristic venomous tail spine, buries in sand by day, and navigates its turbid world through an electrosensory system that detects the faint electrical fields of buried prey. Like all its kin it is live-bearing, slow-reproducing, and poorly known — the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient, a status that reflects the near-total absence of population data rather than any assumption of safety.

Taxonomy & naming

Potamotrygon orbignyi was described by the French naturalist Francis de Laporte de Castelnau in 1855, based on material collected during his South American expedition. It is placed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) in the genus Potamotrygon, family Potamotrygonidae, order Myliobatiformes. The Potamotrygonidae are elasmobranchs — cartilaginous fish whose skeleton is built entirely of cartilage rather than bone — and are therefore far more closely related to the sharks and the marine rays than to any bony fish in this atlas. They represent an ancient marine lineage that invaded the rivers of South America and became isolated in fresh water.

The genus Potamotrygon is the largest in the family and contains many species, some broadly distributed and others restricted to a single river system. Potamotrygon orbignyi belongs to the widespread end of that spectrum, occurring across both the Amazon and the Orinoco drainages. The species epithet honours Alcide d'Orbigny, the French naturalist whose Neotropical collections contributed enormously to nineteenth-century zoology, even though d'Orbigny himself is not the author of this particular species. The taxonomy of the genus is complex and several species boundaries remain under discussion; some synonyms have been applied to forms that overlap with orbignyi's range.

Morphology

Potamotrygon orbignyi has the hallmark shape of a river stingray: a broad, roughly oval to subcircular pectoral disc flattened for a benthic life, with the eyes and paired spiracles on the dorsal surface and the mouth, nostrils, and five pairs of gill slits on the ventral side. The disc reaches approximately 23 in in width in large animals, making this a medium-sized member of the genus; total body length with the tail is substantially greater but disc width (DW) is the standard measurement used for this family. The dorsal ground colour is brownish to greyish, and the species is named 'smooth back' in reference to a comparatively plain dorsal surface lacking the bold ocelli of relatives such as P. motoro — though faint patterning of spots or reticulations may be present depending on the individual and population.

The tail is whip-like, moderately long, and armed near its base with one or more serrated venomous spines — modified denticles sheathed in venom-secreting epithelium, which are shed and replaced periodically. The skin is covered not in scales but in tiny dermal denticles (placoid scales), a trait shared with the sharks, and the disc margin is thin and delicate. Sexual dimorphism is expressed primarily through the presence of paired claspers in males — rod-like copulatory organs formed from the modified inner edges of the pelvic fins — while females are generally larger and lack them. The ampullae of Lorenzini, electroreceptive pores concentrated on the underside of the disc, are a key sensory structure used to detect prey buried in the substrate.

Habitat

Potamotrygon orbignyi is recorded from the Amazon and Orinoco river basins — two of the largest river systems in South America — and appears to tolerate a range of water conditions within those drainages, occurring in both white-water and clear-water rivers. It is a benthic species that favours sandy substrates and the slow or moderate flows of river margins, floodplain lakes, and sandy beaches where it can bury and ambush prey. Like all members of the family it spends much of its time lying partly submerged in fine substrate with only the eyes and spiracles exposed.

The preferred water is warm, soft to moderately mineralised, and near-neutral to slightly acidic, consistent with the general character of lowland Amazonian and Orinoco river water. FishBase reports a temperature range of 75–82 °F for the species. The spiracles — paired openings on the dorsal surface of the head — allow the ray to draw in respiratory water while fully buried, without disturbing the substrate with gill-driven currents, an adaptation that also makes burying effective for both concealment and foraging. Its presence across both the Amazon and Orinoco systems suggests a greater distributional breadth than many Potamotrygon species, though the actual population structure across this range is poorly documented.

Feeding

Potamotrygon orbignyi is a carnivorous benthic predator that feeds on bottom-living invertebrates and small fishes. The hunting strategy is characteristic of the family: the ray lies buried or rests on the substrate, detecting prey items — aquatic insect larvae, crustaceans, worms, molluscs, and small fishes — through the ampullae of Lorenzini, electroreceptive organs distributed across the underside of the disc that sense the weak bioelectric fields produced by living animals hidden in the sand. Prey is pinned under the disc and worked toward the ventrally placed mouth, where crushing tooth-plates process hard-bodied invertebrates.

In aquarium care the species accepts a varied meaty diet including earthworms, whole shrimp, mussel, and other wet or frozen invertebrate and fish foods presented on the bottom. It is a substantial feeder, and its metabolic output — in the form of ammonia and waste — is proportionally high relative to its body size, which is one reason that pristine water quality is not a luxury but a biological necessity for keeping this species alive. Feeding in the aquarium should ideally be observed carefully, both to confirm that individuals are eating well and to monitor the interaction, since hand-feeding any stingray carries risk.

Mating

Like all elasmobranchs, Potamotrygon orbignyi reproduces by internal fertilisation. A male initiates courtship by following the female and biting at the margin of her disc — the bite-marks left on the disc edge are a common sign of recent breeding activity and heal over time. Once the male has grasped the female, he inserts one of his paired claspers into her cloaca and transfers sperm directly. The claspers are paired, but only one is used per mating event; they are formed from the modified inner edges of the pelvic fins and are a defining anatomical feature that allows males to be distinguished from females at a glance.

There is no courtship territory, no nest, no spawning site, and no pair bond. Fertilisation is entirely internal and development proceeds wholly inside the mother. The interest of the reproductive biology lies not in an external event but in what follows internally — a prolonged gestation during which the embryos are sustained by maternal secretions rather than yolk alone.

Breeding

Potamotrygon orbignyi is viviparous, giving birth to fully formed live young. After the embryonic yolk is exhausted in early development, the growing pups are sustained entirely by uterine milk — a protein- and fat-rich histotroph secreted by specialised villi lining the uterine wall — in a process called matrotrophic histotrophy. The embryos absorb this secretion directly rather than depending on a placenta in the mammalian sense, but the nutritional transfer from mother to offspring is substantial and supports the large pup size at birth.

Litter sizes in Potamotrygon orbignyi are small — typically one to four pups per pregnancy, consistent with the family pattern — and gestation lasts approximately three to four months. Pups are born as miniature but fully independent rays, already capable of feeding within days of birth and carrying functional venomous spines. There is no parental care after birth; the female's investment ends with gestation. This combination of small litter size, prolonged gestation, and late sexual maturity means the species has a very low intrinsic rate of increase, making populations slow to recover from depletion.

In the aquarium

Potamotrygon orbignyi is kept by experienced stingray hobbyists but is an advanced species that demands substantial infrastructure and commitment before the first animal is purchased. The minimum aquarium is wide and shallow — floor area measured in square metres for an adult, with a disc-width footprint of at least three times the animal's DW in both length and width. Height matters less than horizontal space; the ray needs room to glide, turn, and bury. The substrate must be a deep layer of fine, smooth sand: coarse gravel or sharp substrate abrades the thin disc tissue, leading to infection.

Water quality is the central challenge. River stingrays are scaleless and exquisitely sensitive to dissolved ammonia and accumulated nitrate; they lack the mucus layer that gives bony fish some buffering against water-quality lapses. Heavy biological filtration, supplemented by large and frequent partial water changes, is non-negotiable. No salt should be added — these are obligate freshwater animals. Many standard aquarium medications are harmful or lethal, particularly those containing copper or organophosphates. Tankmates must be non-aggressive bottom-dwellers that will not nip at the disc; most hobbyists keep rays species-only or with peaceful mid-water fish that ignore the bottom.

The venomous spine is a serious-injury hazard that cannot be overstated. A puncture wound from a stingray spine delivers venom and causes intense, lasting pain that may require medical treatment; fatalities, while rare, are documented. The animals are not aggressive and do not strike voluntarily, but any sudden movement in the tank — reaching in to clean, a startled fish, moving decor — can trigger a reflexive spine strike. Many jurisdictions require a permit or licence to keep Potamotrygon species; prospective keepers should verify their local regulations before acquiring any animal. Captive-bred specimens from reputable breeders are strongly preferred over wild-caught animals both for acclimation reasons and to reduce pressure on wild populations.

Conservation

Potamotrygon orbignyi is assessed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List (2016), a designation that honestly reflects how little is known about the species' population size, trends, and structure across its Amazon–Orinoco range. Data Deficient is not a reassuring status — it means that the information needed to make a meaningful threat assessment does not exist, not that the species is secure. The threats that face it are shared with much of the Potamotrygonidae: ornamental fish collection for the international aquarium trade, incidental capture in artisanal fisheries, killing by fishers and bathers who fear the venomous spine, habitat degradation from dam construction, and pollution including mercury contamination from informal gold mining that spreads through the river basins.

The species' reproductive biology compounds the concern. A slow-reproducing animal with litters of one to four pups and a gestation of several months has almost no capacity to absorb sustained harvest pressure; even modest removal rates can depress populations that take years to recover. Several Potamotrygon species and their range states have sought protective measures through CITES, and Brazil in particular has imposed domestic regulations on the collection and export of freshwater stingrays, though enforcement and monitoring across remote Amazonian and Orinoco river systems remain difficult. Better baseline population data — ideally through systematic environmental-DNA surveys or mark-recapture studies — is the most urgent research need for this species.
