Potamotrygon rex, the king river stingray, is a freshwater stingray of the Amazon basin described by Marcelo Carvalho in 2016. Like all members of family Potamotrygonidae, it is not a bony fish but a cartilaginous one — a close relative of the sharks and marine rays, with a skeleton of cartilage, tooth-like denticles in place of scales, and a venomous serrated tail spine. It glides across sandy bottoms in the warm, soft waters of the Amazon, spending much of its time buried with only its eyes and spiracles visible. A recently described species with limited published data, P. rex remains poorly known in the scientific literature and has been assessed as Near Threatened by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Potamotrygon rex was described by Marcelo de Brito Carvalho in 2016 and is placed in the genus Potamotrygon, family Potamotrygonidae, order Myliobatiformes — the stingrays. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid name. Potamotrygonidae is the only family of stingrays to have colonised fresh water permanently, and Potamotrygon is its largest genus, encompassing the bulk of the family's South American river diversity.

These are elasmobranchs: cartilaginous fish whose skeleton is formed entirely of cartilage, not bone. They are closer kin to the sharks and the marine rays than to any of the bony fishes that fill the rest of this atlas. The name rex — Latin for 'king' — gives the fish its English common name, the king river stingray. As a species described only recently, its full range and the details of its taxonomy remain under active study, and published data on this species are sparse.

Morphology

Potamotrygon rex has the characteristic form of its genus: a rounded, nearly circular pectoral disc flattened for benthic life, with the eyes and the paired spiracles set on top of the head and the mouth, nostrils, and five pairs of gill slits located on the underside. The spiracles are paired openings just behind the eyes, used to draw water in for respiration while the animal lies buried, bypassing a mouth pressed against the substrate.

The skin is covered in tiny tooth-like denticles — modified placoid scales — rather than the smooth scales of bony fishes. Males are distinguished by paired claspers, rod-like copulatory organs formed from the inner edges of the pelvic fins, which are absent in females. The tail carries one or more serrated venomous spines near its base; these are periodically shed and replaced. As with all the Potamotrygon, the body plan is optimised for a life pressed against soft sediment, with the sensory and respiratory openings positioned on the dorsal surface to remain functional while buried.

Habitat

Potamotrygon rex is endemic to the Amazon basin. The Amazon system encompasses a broad range of water chemistries, from the turbid, moderately mineralised white-water of the main stem and its major white-water tributaries, to the soft, acidic clear- and blackwater of the shield rivers. Data on the specific microhabitat preferences of P. rex are sparse in the published literature, but by genus-level pattern, Potamotrygon species are predominantly found on sandy and silty substrates in slow-flowing and marginal habitats — river beaches, shallow inshore margins, floodplain lakes, and areas of flooded forest — where they lie partly buried and hunt benthic prey.

The Amazon white-water system is warm (roughly 75–82 °F), has moderate mineral content, and is close to neutral in pH. The ray's anatomy is adapted for this buried lifestyle: the spiracles on top of the head allow it to breathe while fully concealed beneath sand, and the electrosensory pores (ampullae of Lorenzini) on the underside of the disc allow it to detect the bioelectric fields of hidden prey.

Feeding

Like its congeners, Potamotrygon rex is a benthic carnivore. The family feeds on bottom-dwelling prey items — aquatic insect larvae, crustaceans, molluscs, worms, and small fishes — detected in part through the ampullae of Lorenzini, the electrosensory system distributed across the underside of the disc that can sense the faint electrical fields emitted by living prey even when completely buried in sediment. Prey is pinned against the substrate with the disc and manoeuvred back to the crushing tooth-plates in the mouth.

In the aquarium, Potamotrygon species accept a meaty diet — earthworms, prawn, mussel, fish flesh, and similar whole foods — presented on or near the substrate. They are active feeders that produce considerable metabolic waste, which sets the water-quality bar high: a species eating well is simultaneously a species generating ammonia at a rate the filtration must keep pace with.

Mating

River stingrays reproduce by internal fertilisation, as do all elasmobranchs. When a male detects a receptive female, he pursues and grips the margin of her disc with his teeth — bite marks on the disc are a normal feature of sexually active females — and inserts one of his paired claspers to transfer sperm. The claspers are rod-like extensions of the pelvic fins, present only in males; females lack them entirely.

There is no external spawning, no nest, and no pair bond. Fertilisation and all subsequent development are internal. Females can store sperm and there is no fixed external cue triggering breeding in the wild, although seasonal water-level fluctuations in the Amazon likely influence reproductive cycles. In aquaria, large animals with good conditions will mate without any intervention.

Breeding

Potamotrygon rex is viviparous, giving birth to live young, and nourishes its developing pups by matrotrophic histotrophy — a mechanism shared by all members of the family. After the small yolk supply of the initial egg is exhausted, the embryos are sustained inside the uterus by histotroph: a protein- and fat-rich 'uterine milk' secreted by projections of the uterine wall and taken up directly by the developing pups. This allows the young to grow substantially before birth.

Litter sizes across the genus are small — typically a handful of pups per gestation, commonly in the range of one to four — and gestation lasts several months. Pups are born as fully formed miniature rays, independent and capable of feeding almost immediately. There is no parental care after birth. The combination of slow maturity, long gestation, and small litters means that river stingray populations are inherently slow to recover from any significant level of harvest or mortality, a fact that underpins their conservation vulnerability.

In the aquarium

Potamotrygon rex, like all Potamotrygon, is a demanding species that is unsuitable for the general community aquarium. The overriding requirement is floor area: the aquarium must be wide and long rather than tall, with a footprint measured in square metres for an adult ray. A deep layer of fine, soft sand is essential — the fish buries routinely, and coarse or sharp substrate will abrade the disc. Gravel, pebbles, and similar rough materials are unsuitable.

Water quality is the central challenge. River stingrays are scaleless, with thin delicate skin, and they are acutely sensitive to ammonia and accumulated nitrate. At the same time, they are heavy feeders that produce a large bioload. This combination demands powerful filtration and regular, substantial water changes; neglect in either area results in rapid deterioration. No salt should be added; they are fully freshwater animals. Copper-based medications are toxic and must be avoided entirely. Tankmates should be peaceful, of similar size, and not inclined to nip at fins or investigate the disc. The venomous tail spine is a genuine hazard: a stingray wound is intensely painful and potentially medically serious. For this reason P. rex is not appropriate in households with young children, and its keeping is restricted or subject to permit in a number of jurisdictions. Captive-bred animals are strongly preferred over wild-caught stock for both ethical and husbandry reasons.

Conservation

Potamotrygon rex was described only in 2016, and published data on its distribution, abundance, and ecology remain sparse. The IUCN now lists the species as Near Threatened, indicating genuine, if moderate, conservation concern rather than mere data absence.

The pressures bearing on this species are those shared by the whole family. River stingrays are targeted for the ornamental trade, killed deliberately because of their sting, and taken incidentally in food fisheries. Habitat degradation across the Amazon basin — including dams, deforestation and associated sedimentation, and mercury contamination from artisanal gold mining — affects the sandy-bottomed marginal habitats these rays depend on. Potamotrygonidae as a family is not listed under CITES, but Brazil restricts the commercial export of native freshwater stingrays under domestic regulations. The slow reproductive rate of the family (small litters, long gestation, late maturity) means that populations cannot recover quickly from elevated mortality, making precautionary management essential even in the absence of robust population data.
