Potamotrygon scobina, the mosaic stingray or raspy river stingray, is a mid-sized freshwater stingray of the Amazon basin, recorded from the middle and lower Amazon, the Tocantins, the Pará, and the Trombetas rivers of Brazil. It is not a bony fish but a cartilaginous one — a true elasmobranch, close kin to the sharks and marine rays — and one of the roughly 40 species in the family Potamotrygonidae that are trapped, some millions of years ago, permanently in South American fresh water. Adults reach around 17.5 in disc width, carry a venomous serrated tail spine, and belong to a genus that remains the subject of ongoing taxonomic revision.

Taxonomy & naming

Potamotrygon scobina was described by Samuel Garman in 1913 and is placed in the genus Potamotrygon, family Potamotrygonidae, order Myliobatiformes. The Potamotrygonidae are the South American river stingrays — a natural group of elasmobranchs, cartilaginous fishes whose skeleton is built of cartilage rather than bone. They share a common ancestor with the marine rays and the sharks, not with any bony fish, and are radically different in biology and care requirements from every other group covered in this atlas.

The specific epithet scobina refers to a rasp or file — an allusion to the notably rough texture of the skin, covered in densely packed, coarser-than-usual dermal denticles (the tooth-like structures that replace the scales of bony fish in all elasmobranchs). The holotype is catalogued at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard (MCZ 602-S). A 2017 systematic revision of the P. scobina species-complex described several new species from Brazil, indicating that what has long been called P. scobina may represent a group of related but distinct forms; P. scobina sensu stricto may have a narrower range than the name has historically covered.

Morphology

Like all members of its family, P. scobina has the flat, rounded pectoral disc that is the defining feature of the stingrays: a nearly circular plate formed by the hugely expanded pectoral fins fused to the head, with the eyes and paired spiracles (the respiratory openings used to draw water over the gills while the ray is buried) positioned on the dorsal surface and the mouth, nostrils, and five pairs of gill slits on the underside. Adults reach approximately 17.5 in disc width, with males reportedly to around 17.5 in and captive individuals often remaining somewhat smaller.

The dorsal patterning that gives the ray its "mosaic" common name consists of pale spots or irregular reticulations on a darker ground, though colour and pattern vary individually and between populations. The skin texture is distinctively rougher than many congeners — the dermal denticles are more prominent, accounting for the "raspy" name and the Latin epithet. The tail is slender and moderately long, bearing one or more serrated venomous spines near the base; these spines are periodically shed and regrown. Males are identified by their paired claspers, the rod-like copulatory organs formed from the medial edges of the pelvic fins; females, which carry the energetic burden of gestation, grow somewhat larger.

Habitat

Potamotrygon scobina is endemic to the Amazon basin of Brazil, with records centred on the middle and lower Amazon, the lower Tocantins, the Pará, and the Trombetas rivers. It inhabits the benthos of lowland freshwater rivers, favouring sand banks, shallow river margins with soft mud or sand substrate, and slow-moving tributaries. Like other members of its family it is potamodromous — making seasonal movements within fresh water rather than migrating to the sea — and it enters flooded forest and marginal lakes during the wet season when river levels rise.

The rivers it occupies include both white-water systems (the turbid, moderately mineralised Amazon mainstem) and clear-water tributaries, so the species spans a range of water chemistry, though always within the warm, soft-to-moderately-mineralised, neutral-to-acidic envelope typical of lowland Amazonian rivers. The ray lies partly buried in soft substrate during the day, drawing water through its spiracles to breathe, and is most active at dusk and at night.

Feeding

P. scobina is a carnivore and a benthic forager. Like all potamotrygonids it hunts bottom-dwelling invertebrates and small fish using a combination of vision, olfaction, and — critically — the ampullae of Lorenzini: electroreceptive pores distributed across the underside of the disc that detect the faint bioelectric fields generated by buried prey animals. It pins prey beneath the disc before manoeuvring it to the crushing tooth-plates of the lower jaw.

In the aquarium it accepts a variety of meaty foods: earthworms, prawns, mussel, pieces of fresh fish, and other invertebrate items. Like all river stingrays it is a heavy feeder relative to its body size, producing a correspondingly large waste load, which drives the stringent filtration and water-change requirements that define the keeping of this family. Food should be presented at or near the substrate; individuals often become accustomed to feeding from the keeper's hand, though this habit should be approached with care given the venomous spine.

Mating

River stingrays reproduce by internal fertilisation, as do all elasmobranchs. The male locates and pursues a receptive female, gripping the margin of her disc with his mouth — a behaviour that typically leaves bite marks on her disc, which heal — and inserts one of his paired claspers into the female's cloaca to transfer sperm. Claspers are a diagnostic feature of male elasmobranchs; they are modified extensions of the pelvic fin and are absent in females, making sex determination straightforward.

Captive breeding of P. scobina has been documented in suitably large aquaria, but it is not an everyday achievement and requires excellent conditioning and water quality. Courtship and mating can be rough and should be monitored; the female should have room to retreat. As in the rest of the family there is no pair bond and no territorial attachment — after mating the animals go their separate ways and development proceeds entirely within the female.

Breeding

Potamotrygon scobina is viviparous — it bears live young — and shares the distinctive reproductive mode of the entire family: matrotrophic histotrophy. After the small yolk of each embryo is consumed, the developing pups are nourished inside the uterus by a rich, protein- and fat-laden secretion (histotroph, sometimes called uterine milk) produced by specialised extensions of the uterine wall, which the pups absorb directly. This allows the embryos to grow substantially beyond what their small egg yolk could support.

Litter size is modest: reports indicate 1–8 pups per litter, with gestation lasting roughly 9–12 weeks (Seriously Fish) to 3–4 months depending on temperature and individual variation. Pups are born as fully formed miniature rays, independent from the first moments and capable of burying and feeding within a short time. There is no parental care after birth. This reproductive strategy — small litters, long gestation, and the late age at first maturity typical of elasmobranchs — means P. scobina is extremely vulnerable to over-exploitation; populations cannot recover quickly from heavy removal.

In the aquarium

Potamotrygon scobina is kept in the specialised freshwater-stingray hobby but is not commonly encountered and is considered an intermediate to advanced species. The requirements are those of the family: an aquarium dominated by floor area rather than height, sized so that an adult can turn and move freely — in practice this means several square metres of floor space for a full-grown individual. A deep bed of soft, fine sand is essential; the ray buries routinely, and coarse gravel abrades the delicate underside of the disc.

Water quality must be excellent at all times. River stingrays are scaleless elasmobranchs with thin skin, a high metabolic rate, and acute sensitivity to dissolved wastes; even moderate ammonia concentrations or elevated nitrate cause rapid decline. Heavy biological and mechanical filtration combined with large, frequent water changes is the baseline, not an aspiration. No salt should be added. Medications containing copper or other metals typically toxic to invertebrates are dangerous; treatment of disease requires specialist veterinary advice. Tankmates must be peaceful bottom-dwellers that will not nip the disc or fins.

The venomous tail spine is a serious hazard — stingray wounds are acutely painful and can require medical treatment. This makes P. scobina and its relatives emphatically unsuitable for households with children who might reach into the tank, and keeping freshwater stingrays is restricted or licensed in a number of jurisdictions. Captive-bred stock should be sought wherever possible: wild-caught rays often arrive stressed, parasitised, and accustomed to conditions very different from those in the hobbyist tank.

Conservation

Potamotrygon scobina is assessed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. As an Amazon-basin endemic with a distribution centred on the middle and lower Amazon, Tocantins, Pará, and Trombetas, it faces the full suite of threats affecting freshwater stingrays in the region: habitat degradation from dam construction (including the Belo Monte dam complex on the Xingu, which affects connected lowland river systems), mercury contamination from artisanal gold mining, deliberate killing because of the venomous sting, bycatch in commercial fisheries, and collection pressure from the ornamental trade.

The slow reproductive rate of the species — small litters of 1–8 pups, gestation measured in months, and elasmobranch-typical late sexual maturity — means that populations recover very slowly from any significant removal. Brazil has moved to restrict the export of wild-caught Potamotrygon, and P. scobina falls under those restrictions. The species is listed under CITES Appendix III (listed by Colombia). The 2017 revision of the P. scobina species-complex, recognising several new species within what had been treated as one variable taxon, may shift the conservation picture: if the "true" P. scobina occupies a narrower geographic range than previously understood, its status could warrant a more precautionary assessment. Better distributional surveys and clearer taxonomic boundaries are conservation priorities.
