Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Copadichromis chizumuluensis is a small, open-water utaka cichlid endemic to a single rocky island in Lake Malawi. Like the rest of its genus it makes a living straining zooplankton from the water column, but it does so within an area of just a few square kilometres off Chizumulu Island, where breeding males build sand bowers at the interface of sand and rock and don a blue-breasted nuptial dress. Known in the hobby for years only as 'Copadichromis sp. chizumulu blue', it was formally named in 2006 in Stauffer and Konings' revision of the genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Copadichromis chizumuluensis was described by Jay R. Stauffer Jr. and Ad F. Konings in 2006, in their review of the genus Copadichromis (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 17(1): 9-42), a paper that erected a new genus and six new species drawn from the lake's utaka radiation. The type locality is Chizumulu Island in Lake Malawi, the small island after which the fish is named, and the species has been recognized as valid in that combination ever since; FishBase and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes both carry the authority as Stauffer & Konings, 2006, and the species record has no synonyms. Within Copadichromis it falls in the Copadichromis mbenjii species group, a cluster of utaka separated largely on the size and arrangement of the dark flank spots and on male breeding colour. Before it was formally described it circulated in the aquarium trade and in field notes as 'Copadichromis sp. chizumulu blue', a name that survives as a trade label. Copadichromis is one of the large 'haplochromine' genera of Lake Malawi rather than a member of the rock-dwelling mbuna; its species are the open-water plankton specialists Malawian fishermen collectively call utaka.

Morphology

This is a modest-sized cichlid with a fusiform, laterally compressed body typical of the utaka. FishBase records a maximum standard length of about 4 in for the type material; in life, and counting the tail, males grow noticeably larger than females, with field references citing males to roughly 6.5 in total length and females to about 4 in. The fins carry 16-17 dorsal spines and 11-12 dorsal soft rays, three anal spines and 9-10 anal soft rays. The species is diagnosed within its genus chiefly by its spotting and gill-raker count: the supra-pectoral spot on the flank is about two to two-and-a-half times the diameter of the supra-anal spot, and there are 17-19 gill rakers on the first ceratobranchial. Sexual dichromatism is pronounced, as it is throughout the utaka. Females and non-breeding fish are a plain silvery grey, well suited to schooling in open water, while a courting male turns dark with a distinctly blue breast, shows a narrow yellow marginal band in the anal fin, and bears light (pale) spots within that fin—a combination Stauffer and Konings used to separate it from its congeners.

Habitat

Copadichromis chizumuluensis is a lacustrine endemic in the strictest sense: it is known only from the waters around Chizumulu Island, one of the two inhabited islands (with neighbouring Likoma) lying off the Mozambican east coast of Lake Malawi but belonging to Malawi. Its mapped range is tiny—the IUCN assessment gives an estimated area of occupancy of about 17 mi² and an extent of occurrence near 10 mi², all within a single location. The fish favours the transition between habitats rather than any one of them: it frequents bottoms of sand strewn with scattered rocks and stones, and ranges into the open pelagic zone over and just off the rocky shore. Breeding males establish themselves at the sand-rock interface at depths of roughly 39–66 ft, while feeding individuals move up into the water column above. As a Lake Malawi fish it lives in the warm, hard, alkaline water characteristic of the lake—broadly 75–82 °F with a pH around 7.7-8.6 and high carbonate hardness—the same in-situ chemistry that makes the whole Malawi cichlid flock demanding of stable, mineral-rich conditions in captivity.

Feeding

Like all utaka, Copadichromis chizumuluensis is fundamentally a zooplanktivore—a fish built to pick crustacean zooplankton out of open water. Stauffer and Konings record it feeding both on plankton suspended in the water column and on benthic invertebrates taken from the bottom, so in practice it is a flexible micro-predator rather than a pure midwater filter feeder, and FishBase places its estimated trophic level near 3.4. The fine, numerous gill rakers (17-19 on the first ceratobranchial) are the working tool of this guild, sieving small prey as the fish gulps water. Ecologically the utaka are a keystone of Lake Malawi's open-water food web: vast loose schools convert the lake's zooplankton production into fish biomass, and in turn they support larger predators and a substantial subsistence and commercial fishery. Copadichromis chizumuluensis fills that role on the small, isolated stage of Chizumulu's nearshore waters.

Mating

Reproduction in this species follows the lek-like pattern of the bower-building utaka. Mature males leave the feeding schools and take up territories on the bottom at the sand-rock interface, where each clears and shapes a sand bower—a simple crater or platform that serves as a courtship arena and spawning site rather than a nest for the eggs. From this bower the male displays in full nuptial colour, the blue breast and yellow-edged anal fin advertising his fitness to females that pass over the breeding ground in small groups. Females spend most of their time in these loose feeding aggregations and visit the males' territories to spawn. Aggression is modest by Malawi standards: males are territorial toward one another on the breeding ground but the species is otherwise a comparatively peaceful, schooling utaka, which is why aquarists treat it as suitable for calmer open-water communities rather than the boisterous mbuna tank.

Breeding

Copadichromis chizumuluensis is a maternal mouthbrooder, the dominant breeding mode among Lake Malawi's haplochromine cichlids. Spawning takes place over the male's bower; after the eggs are fertilized the female takes them into her mouth and carries and incubates the developing clutch and then the free-swimming fry herself, with no further contribution from the male. As in related utaka the clutch is small—on the order of a few dozen eggs rather than the hundreds a substrate spawner produces—a trade-off that buys each fry the protection of being brooded in the mother's mouth through its most vulnerable stage. Specific fecundity and brooding-duration figures have not been published for this narrowly distributed species; by analogy with congeneric Copadichromis the incubation runs on the order of two to three weeks at lake temperatures. In aquaria it spawns readily for a Malawi cichlid given mature water, a sand substrate and a harem of one male to two or three females, with the female best moved to a separate brooding tank if fry are to be raised.

In the aquarium

Copadichromis chizumuluensis is an uncommon fish in the hobby — it surfaces periodically under the old trade name 'Copadichromis sp. chizumulu blue' and is more likely to be found through specialist Malawi cichlid breeders than in general fish shops. When available it is a rewarding fish for the experienced Malawi keeper who wants something quieter and more elegant than the typical mbuna community. A tank of at least 59–71 in in length (broadly 80–105 US gal) is appropriate for a group; utaka are open-water fish built for sustained swimming and a cramped tank suppresses natural behaviour, dulls male colour, and invites stress-related disease. The layout should reflect the species' natural habitat: a deep sand substrate (2–3 in) with a scattered arrangement of rocks along one or two sides provides breeding cues for males and a degree of visual complexity, but the bulk of the tank volume must remain open. These fish are mid-column and surface swimmers — dense rock stacking or heavy planting defeats the point.

Water chemistry must match that of Lake Malawi: hard, alkaline, and warm. Maintain a pH of 7.8–8.6, a carbonate hardness of at least 10 dKH, and a temperature of 75–82 °F. Unlike mbuna many Malawi keepers push toward the higher end of that range, but consistency matters more than the exact figure — swings of more than a degree or two over a day are stressful. Nitrate should be kept low through regular partial water changes; Malawi cichlids evolved in an enormous, dilute, well-buffered lake and are sensitive to the nitrate accumulation common in smaller, overstocked tanks. A quality external canister filter or sump, run at a turnover of at least five to eight times the tank volume per hour, is the standard approach.

As a utaka, Copadichromis chizumuluensis is considerably less aggressive than the rock-dwelling mbuna and should not be mixed with highly territorial species that would harry it out of the open water. Good tankmates are other non-aggressive haplochromines of comparable size — moderately-mannered Protomelas or Otopharynx species, for instance — and larger, peaceful utaka such as Copadichromis borleyi or Copadichromis chrysonotus, provided the tank is large enough to give each species its own space. It is entirely unsuitable for mbuna-heavy communities: the relentless aggression of zebra-complex and Pseudotropheus species will stress it and suppress spawning. Keep a ratio of one male to two or three females to distribute male attention and reduce female fatigue; multiple males in a single tank are manageable only in very large setups where each can maintain visual separation.

In terms of diet, this species adapts readily to dry foods but does best with a mixed menu that includes high-quality flake or pellet, regular frozen or live cyclops, daphnia, and artemia, and occasional mysis. These are the zooplankton analogues that replace the lake's crustacean plankton in captivity. Earthworm-based or high-fat foods should be avoided or used sparingly — fatty foods are associated with Malawi bloat (a catch-all term for the clostridial and bacterial gut infections that periodically devastate cichlid tanks), and the gut of a zooplanktivore is not adapted to high-lipid diets.

Breeding follows naturally in a well-maintained harem group. The male will select a sandy area, ideally near the rock edge, and clear a shallow bower where he will display in full colour — dark body with the distinctive blue breast — to passing females. After spawning over the bower the female takes the eggs into her mouth and broods alone. The brooding female is best moved to a separate, quiet tank if the fry are to be raised: left in the community she will be harassed into releasing early, particularly if males of any species are actively courting nearby. At 79 °F incubation runs approximately three weeks; fry released at this point are large enough to take newly-hatched brine shrimp and fine cyclops immediately. The male plays no role in parental care beyond defending the bower territory during the brief courtship window (generalised from Konings, Malawi Cichlids in their Natural Habitat, and from congeneric Copadichromis husbandry; species-specific published breeding records are thin given the fish's rarity in captivity).

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Copadichromis chizumuluensis as Least Concern (assessed 22 June 2018 by A. Konings and the FishBase team at the Royal Museum for Central Africa, reviewed by J. Snoeks). The listing is a deliberately cautious 'least concern' rather than a sign of abundance: the assessors note that with its very small range—one location and an area of occupancy of roughly 17 mi²—the species meets the area thresholds of criterion B for a threatened category, but they judged future declines or extreme fluctuations possible yet unlikely, and so declined to list it as threatened. The species is not targeted by the ornamental trade; the only documented pressure is subsistence fishing for utaka, whose effect on this particular fish is unknown but does not currently appear to threaten it. Its real vulnerability is the flip side of its appeal—single-island endemism. Anything that degrades the narrow band of sand-and-rock and overlying open water at Chizumulu, from sediment loading and shoreline disturbance to localized over-fishing, falls on the whole world population of the species at once. That sits within the wider strain on Lake Malawi as a basin: a warming, more stably stratified lake with declining deep-water mixing and mounting fishing pressure, conditions that bear hardest on plankton-feeding fishes and on narrow-range endemics with nowhere else to go.
