Taxonomy & naming
Copadichromis cyanocephalus was described by Jay R. Stauffer Jr. and Ad Konings in 2006, in their review of the genus Copadichromis that erected the new genus Mchenga and six new species (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 17(1): 9-42). The holotype (PSU 3639) was collected at Charley's Bay on the Mozambican shore of Lake Malawi, at 13°22.262'S, 34°50.075'E, and the nomenclatural act is registered in ZooBank. The genus Copadichromis was raised by Eccles & Trewavas in 1989 to receive the bulk of the lake's 'utaka' — the offshore, plankton-picking haplochromines formerly lumped into Haplochromis. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase both carry the species as valid under its original combination, Copadichromis cyanocephalus Stauffer & Konings, 2006, in the family Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, tribe Haplochromini. The Cichlid Room Companion places it in the 'Mbenjii' species group of the genus. It had circulated in the hobby before its description under the provisional name Copadichromis sp. 'verduyni blueface', and the malawi.si database documents it at the reef of Chiloelo, the location variant on which the formal description is based.
Morphology
This is a modest-sized cichlid, and reported sizes differ with source and method. FishBase records a maximum of about 3.5 in standard length, while field workers and the malawi.si database give a typical adult length of roughly 5.5 in total — the difference partly reflecting standard versus total length and the small size of the preserved type series. The body plan is the generalized Copadichromis form: laterally compressed and fusiform, built for hovering and darting in open water, with the small, strongly protrusible mouth and numerous long, fine gill rakers that define zooplankton-straining cichlids. Out of breeding dress both sexes are silvery and countershaded, pale below and darker above. The species is named for the male's nuptial colour: territorial males turn a conspicuous deep blue over the head and breast (Greek kyanos, 'blue', plus kephale, 'head'). Females and non-breeding fish keep the plain silvery livery, so the sexual dimorphism is almost entirely one of breeding colour rather than shape or size.
Habitat
Copadichromis cyanocephalus is, on present knowledge, restricted to the eastern shore of Lake Malawi within Mozambican waters, recorded from a few kilometres north of Meponda south to the Lumessi River. It belongs to the rocky and intermediate shoreline zone rather than the truly pelagic open lake: territorial males establish their bowers on the slope at depths of roughly 15 to 22 metres, where rock gives way to sand. The water it lives in is the warm, alkaline, well-oxygenated upper layer characteristic of Lake Malawi — temperatures broadly in the mid-20s Celsius and a hard, alkaline chemistry with pH around 7.7 to 8.6, the envelope shared by essentially all of the lake's shallow- and mid-water cichlids. Females and immature fish keep to small groups that hover near the bottom, descending the slope to the male territories only to spawn.
Feeding
As an utaka, Copadichromis cyanocephalus is a zooplanktivore. The whole guild — Copadichromis and the closely allied genera — makes its living by hanging in midwater and picking individual copepods, cladocerans and other small drifting crustaceans one at a time, a feeding mode for which the highly protrusible, tube-like mouth and long gill rakers are precisely adapted. FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 3.3, consistent with a diet dominated by zooplankton rather than algae or larger prey. This planktivorous habit is the ecological core of the utaka and the reason the group as a whole is so commercially important to Lake Malawi's lakeshore fishery, even though this particular small-bodied species is not itself a major catch.
Mating
Reproduction in this species follows the classic utaka lek pattern. Mature males leave the loose feeding shoals and move down onto the rocky-to-sandy slope at 15-22 metres, where each clears and defends a bower — a cleared or low-mounded spawning site on the substrate. Holding station over his bower, the male advertises with his nuptial blue head and breast, displaying to females that approach from the nearby bottom-hugging groups. Multiple males defending neighbouring bowers form a loose arena, and a receptive female moves among them to choose a mate before spawning. Outside of breeding the species is described as only moderately aggressive, with territorial behaviour concentrated in the breeding season; the male contributes courtship, fertilization and territory defence but no parental care beyond the spawning act itself.
Breeding
Copadichromis cyanocephalus is a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all members of the genus. After the pair spawns over the male's bower, the female takes the fertilized eggs into her mouth and carries them there through incubation, the developing young sheltered in the buccal cavity until they are free-swimming. She then leaves the breeding slope and returns to the female groups, brooding and later releasing the fry away from the male arena. There is no biparental care: once spawning is complete the male resumes displaying for other females, and the entire investment in the developing brood falls to the female. Precise clutch sizes and incubation periods for this species are not well documented in the literature, but they can be expected to track those of comparable small Copadichromis, with brood counts on the order of a few dozen and incubation of roughly three weeks at lake temperatures.
In the aquarium
Copadichromis cyanocephalus is an intermediate-level cichlid, manageable for a keeper with prior experience of Lake Malawi haplochromines but not an ideal first Malawi fish. A colony with one male and two or three females needs a tank of at least 40–50 US gal, and a comfortable adult group including a displaying male is better served by 65 US gal or more. The overriding layout priority is open swimming room: like all utaka, this species spends most of its life in the water column, and a tank crammed with rockwork will suppress normal behaviour and increase stress. A generous sandy floor — washed pool sand or fine coral sand — is appropriate, reproducing the rocky-to-sand interface the species occupies at 15–22 metres in the lake. A modest rockpile or two at the back and sides gives subordinate fish a visual break and gives a displaying male a natural backdrop for his bower, but the centre and front of the tank should be open water.
Water chemistry must match Lake Malawi conditions without compromise. Target pH 7.8–8.5, general hardness above 10 °dH, and carbonate hardness in the range of 8–12 °KH; moderately hard to hard, alkaline tap water often works directly, but soft or acidic water needs appropriate buffering. Temperature of 75–81 °F is comfortable; avoid sustained temperatures below 73 °F or above 84 °F. Filtration should be robust — a turnover of at least 8–10 times the tank volume per hour suits these active, open-water fish — and weekly water changes of 25–30 % are standard practice for the Malawi alkalinity.
Copadichromis cyanocephalus is markedly less aggressive than the mbuna (rock-dwelling Malawi cichlids such as Pseudotropheus or Melanochromis), and mixing them with mbuna is generally unwise: mbuna routinely bully and harass the more open-water haplochromines, and the chemical and behavioural demands of the two groups do not sit comfortably together. Good tankmates are other moderate-tempered, same-sized haplochromines — Aulonocara species and similarly peaceable Copadichromis or Protomelas work well — and non-cichlid bottom-dwellers such as Synodontis catfish that occupy a different niche entirely. Mixing multiple males of the same or closely related Copadichromis species risks persistent aggression and possible hybridisation; the standard advice for utaka is one male per species per tank.
Feeding in captivity is straightforward. This is a planktivore with a small, delicate mouth and a digestive system not designed for high-protein meatier foods as a staple. A quality flake or micro-pellet with a significant vegetable or spirulina component forms the base; supplement with frozen or live cyclops, Daphnia, and Artemia, which trigger natural mid-water feeding behaviour. Avoid feeding high-protein foods such as bloodworm (Chironomus larvae) as the regular diet — utaka and other Lake Malawi cichlids are prone to Malawi bloat, a sometimes fatal digestive condition associated with inappropriate high-fat or high-protein feeding and/or poor water quality, and a diet that mimics zooplankton rather than invertebrate meat reduces that risk.
Breeding in captivity is achievable for a patient keeper. A well-fed male in full blue nuptial dress will claim the sandy area of the tank as a bower and display persistently to females. The female mouthbroods for approximately three weeks, and best practice is to move her to a quiet, separate holding tank for the last week of incubation so that she can release the fry without pressure from tankmates. Released fry are large enough to take crushed flake and newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii immediately. The common mistake with this species is providing too little open water, followed closely by housing it with mbuna that deny it the calm mid-water life it needs. Given adequate space, appropriate chemistry, and peaceable companions, it is a rewarding and visually striking cichlid: the breeding male's blue head against a sandy floor is among the cleaner colour displays Malawi has to offer.
Conservation
Copadichromis cyanocephalus is assessed on the IUCN Red List as Near Threatened (NT), under criterion B1a, in an assessment by Konings and the FishBase team at the Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA), last assessed on 22 June 2018 (errata version published 2019). The species qualifies as Near Threatened because of its small range: the Red List records an extent of occurrence of about 600 square kilometres and a single known location along the Mozambican shore, with the population trend unknown. A narrow-range Lake Malawi endemic of this kind is inherently more exposed to localized pressures than the lake's widespread species. The broad threats facing the southern lake apply as a backdrop — sediment loading from catchment deforestation, the heavy artisanal and commercial fishery that targets utaka in particular, and collection of cichlids for the ornamental trade. None of these is documented as a specific, quantified threat to this species, but the combination of a small range and a single location is precisely what keeps it on the threshold of the threatened categories, and targeted survey work would refine its true standing.
