Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Copadichromis azureus, the blue utaka or electric-blue Copadichromis, is a zooplankton-feeding cichlid endemic to the southern half of Lake Malawi. Females and juveniles wear the drab silvery-beige livery typical of the genus, marked with three dark spots along the flank, but a dominant male in breeding dress transforms into one of the most intensely coloured fish in the lake: a deep, metallic azure that gives the species both its epithet and its hobby fame. It belongs to the utaka, the open-water plankton-pickers of Malawi, yet it stays closer to the bottom than most of its relatives, hovering over the sand-and-rock interface where the males build and defend sand-bowl bowers.

Taxonomy & naming

Copadichromis azureus was described by Ad Konings in 1990, in an article on six new Malawi cichlids in Tropical Fish Hobbyist (38(11): 110-129), with Mbenji Island in Lake Malawi as the type locality. The genus Copadichromis was erected by Eccles & Trewavas in 1989 to hold the utaka and their allies, pulling them out of the old catch-all 'Haplochromis'; before its formal description, azureus circulated in the trade and early literature under provisional names tied to Haplochromis chrysonotus, and FishBase still records the aquarium trade tags 'Haplochromis chrysonotus mbenji' and 'Haplochromis chrysonotus maleri'. The species sits within the genus's mbenjii species-group. Stauffer & Konings (2006) reviewed Copadichromis comprehensively, erecting a new genus and describing six further species and refining the diagnostic characters used to separate azureus from its many look-alikes. The valid combination and authorship (Konings, 1990) are confirmed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (species record spid 60995) and by FishBase.

Morphology

This is a medium-sized, fusiform utaka. FishBase lists a maximum of 5.5 in total length; field and aquarium observations summarised on malawi.si put wild males at up to roughly 6 in, with the largest aquarium specimens occasionally approaching 7 in, while females stay smaller at around 4 in. The fin counts are 15-18 dorsal spines and 10-12 dorsal soft rays, 3 anal spines and 8-9 anal soft rays. The diagnostic markings are three lateral spots on the body: the supra-pectoral spot is about 1.5 times the size of the supra-anal spot and sits separate from the upper lateral line, and the supra-anal spot is smaller than two scales. In a breeding male those spots are largely swamped by colour: the body becomes a brilliant, saturated azure-blue, the breast turns blue, and the anal fin carries a narrow yellow marginal band with no spots or streaks. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Females and non-breeding fish are a plain beige-silver showing the three black flank spots clearly, while only dominant, territorial males develop the full electric-blue coloration; subordinate males remain female-like.

Habitat

Copadichromis azureus is endemic to Lake Malawi and confined to the southern half of the lake. FishBase records it from the Mbenji Islands (including Nakatenga) and the Maleri Islands, from Nkhomo Reef near Benga, and from Eccles Reef south of Makanjila on the eastern coast. The 2018 IUCN assessment takes a stricter view, treating the species as restricted to just two localities, Mbenji Island and Nkhomo Reef, with an estimated extent of occurrence of only about 47 km2 and an area of occupancy near 16 km2; the broader reef records may represent closely allied or location-variant populations. It lives at the sand/rock interface of intermediate habitats, areas of open sand studded with a few sediment-covered rocks rather than continuous rock or pure sand. It is a relatively deep-dwelling utaka: FishBase gives a usual depth range of about 62–82 ft, and the IUCN notes occurrence below 33 ft with males breeding deeper than 56 ft. Lake Malawi's offshore water in this zone is warm, well-oxygenated in the upper layers, alkaline and moderately mineralised, with surface temperatures broadly in the mid-20s Celsius and a pH around 7.7-8.6.

Feeding

As a member of the utaka, Copadichromis azureus is fundamentally a zooplanktivore, and FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.4. Females and non-breeding males gather in small foraging groups (or forage solitarily) and pick zooplankton and benthic invertebrates from the water column close to the bottom, typically within a couple of metres of the substrate. This bottom-hugging habit sets it apart from the many open-water utaka that feed in midwater swarms, and the IUCN notes that because it stays closer to the substrate than most utaka it is only irregularly taken in the chirimila plankton nets. Territorial males, tied to their bowers, have additionally been observed feeding on detritus from the bottom. The utaka as a group are pelagic plankton specialists that convert the lake's vast standing crop of copepods and other zooplankton into fish biomass, and they are correspondingly important both ecologically and as a local food fishery.

Mating

Reproduction is organised around male-held sand bowers. Dominant males establish territories in the intermediate habitat and excavate a spawning bower, a sand bowl built in front of or under a rock, commonly 7.5–13 in in diameter, with neighbouring bowers spaced several metres apart. The bowl spans roughly half a circle or less. Males in full azure breeding dress display from and defend these structures, which double as courtship arenas; rival males are met with strong aggression, while non-similar tankmates are generally tolerated. Females and non-breeding males remain in loose foraging groups away from the territories and visit the bowers to spawn. Because several very similar Copadichromis can share the same reefs, females presumably use the male's coloration and bower display to identify conspecific mates; malawi.si specifically cautions against mixing azureus with look-alikes such as Copadichromis insularis in aquaria to reduce both aggression and the risk of hybridisation.

Breeding

Copadichromis azureus is a maternal (ovophilous) mouthbrooder, the standard reproductive mode of the haplochromine cichlids of Lake Malawi. Spawning takes place over the male's bower: the female lays eggs on the sand bowl, takes them into her mouth, and the eggs are fertilised as she mouths at the male's anal fin in the usual haplochromine fashion. The female alone then incubates the eggs and larvae buccally and provides all subsequent parental care, releasing free-swimming fry after the yolk is absorbed. The IUCN reports that breeding occurs throughout the year, slowing during the rainy season, with males excavating their spawning bowls under rocks at depths greater than about 56 ft. Clutch sizes are not well documented for this species in the wild; like other utaka it produces relatively modest broods consistent with the energetic cost of mouthbrooding. A generation length of about two years is given in the Red List assessment.

In the aquarium

Copadichromis azureus is a popular and widely available Lake Malawi cichlid in the hobby, and one of the more tractable haplochromines for a keeper who can meet its space requirements. A single male with two or three females wants a tank of at least 71 in (about 50–55 US gal minimum, though larger is better), because males are territorial toward one another and a dominant fish will relentlessly pursue subordinates in a cramped space. The most important design principle is open water: this is a midwater plankton-feeder that hovers and drifts through the water column, and the bulk of the aquarium should be unobstructed swimming space. Sand substrate is appropriate, as males in breeding condition will excavate a shallow bower bowl, and a scatter of rocks or a flat slate along the back or sides provides territorial reference points and retreat cover for females without blocking the open centre. Filtration must be robust enough to maintain the water quality typical of Lake Malawi — hard, alkaline, and warm — with pH held between about 7.8 and 8.6, total hardness in the range of 10–20 dH, and temperature between 24 and 82 °F. Significant pH swings or soft, acidic water are harmful; the lake's chemistry is stable, and these fish have no tolerance for the conditions common to South American species.

Copadichromis azureus belongs to the haplochromine community known as haps, and it is considerably calmer than the mbuna (rock-dwelling Malawi cichlids such as Pseudotropheus and Melanochromis). Mixing it with aggressive mbuna is not advisable: mbuna typically out-compete haps for territory and food, and the persistent harassment stresses or injures the more open-water fish. Good tankmates are other mid-sized, non-aggressive haplochromines and peacocks (Aulonocara spp.), which share similar water requirements and social tempo. Copadichromis of different species or with similar body patterns should not be combined — malawi.si specifically flags the risk of hybridisation when look-alikes such as Copadichromis insularis are housed together — and a male-dominated group of the same species is equally inadvisable unless the tank is very large with good sight-line breaks.

Diet in the aquarium is straightforward. Copadichromis azureus accepts high-quality flake and pellet foods readily, and it benefits from regular feedings of frozen or live cyclops, daphnia, or brine shrimp that reflect its zooplanktivore nature. Like other Malawi cichlids it is prone to the disorder commonly called Malawi bloat if fed excessively on protein-rich beefheart or other mammalian meats; these should be avoided. Feed small amounts two or three times a day rather than a single large meal.

Breeding in captivity follows the wild pattern. When a male is in full azure colour and begins excavating a shallow pit in the sand, spawning is likely imminent. The female lays a modest clutch (comparable to other utaka, probably 30–60 eggs, though this is inferred from related species and not documented specifically for azureus), takes the eggs into her mouth, and the male fertilises them in the usual haplochromine manner. The female should ideally be moved to a separate, lightly furnished holding tank for the roughly three-week incubation period; if left in the main tank she may be harassed by the male or other fish into spitting the brood prematurely. Fry are released at about 0.5 in and can be raised on finely crushed flake and baby brine shrimp. A common keeper error is stripping the female too early or disturbing her so repeatedly that she learns to spit eggs; allowing her a calm, undisturbed holding period produces the best survival rates.

Difficulty is moderate. The species is forgiving of routine husbandry in a well-maintained hard-water cichlid tank, but beginners who do not understand the importance of open water, stable alkalinity, and compatible tankmates often lose fish to aggression or disease. Provided those fundamentals are met, Copadichromis azureus is hardy, long-lived, and rewarding: a dominant male in full breeding dress is among the most intensely coloured fish available in the cichlid hobby.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Copadichromis azureus as Near Threatened (criteria B1a+2a), assessed on 22 June 2018 by Ad Konings and reviewed by Jos Snoeks, with an errata version published in 2019 to add a point-data map; this superseded an earlier 2006 listing of Least Concern. The Near Threatened rating reflects the species' very small range, treated as a single location restricted to Mbenji Island and Nkhomo Reef, combined with two harvesting pressures: subsistence fishing with chirimila nets by fishermen who spend part of the year on Mbenji Island targeting utaka, and collection for the ornamental aquarium trade, where it is very popular and has been sold under names such as 'Haplochromis chrysonotus'. No clear population decline has been detected and the population trend is recorded as unknown, but the assessment flags that the combined effect of growing aquarium demand and subsistence fishing on so localised a species is uncertain, and it recommends population monitoring. The species carries no CITES listing.
