Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Copadichromis ilesi is a maternally mouthbrooding cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, one of the lake's "utaka" — the open-water haplochromines that hover in shoals and pick drifting zooplankton out of the current. Described by Ad Konings in 1999 and named for the fishery biologist T.D. Iles, who first made scientific sense of the utaka guild, it is a rare and localized fish best known to hobbyists under the trade name "Virginalis Kajose." Breeding males turn dark with a creamy-to-yellow blaze on the head, and they excavate sand-walled nests under rocks in deep water, while plain silvery females brood the young in the shallows.

Taxonomy & naming

Copadichromis ilesi was described by Ad F. Konings in 1999, in a paper that introduced three new Copadichromis species from Lake Malawi (Tropical Fish Hobbyist 47(9):62–84). The Catalog of Fishes records the type locality as Gome, Lake Malawi, at 13°30.445'S, 34°52.003'E, with the holotype (MRAC 99-07-P-17) and eight paratypes (MRAC 99-07-P-18 to 25) deposited in the Royal Museum for Central Africa at Tervuren. The species has been treated as valid by every subsequent author (Stauffer & Sato 2002; Snoeks & Hanssens 2004; Stauffer & Konings 2006; Konings 2016) and carries no synonyms.

The genus Copadichromis was erected by Eccles and Trewavas in their 1989 revision of the Malawian haplochromine genera, and it is the home of the "utaka" — a Chichewa fisheries term for the shoaling, plankton-eating haplochromines that are netted in open water. The genus is taxonomically thorny, with many subtle, look-alike species, and Copadichromis ilesi is among the more cryptic of them: the IUCN assessment notes that further research may show it to be the same fish circulating in the hobby as Copadichromis sp. "Virginalis Kajose," and that it is sold under that name in the aquarium trade.

Morphology

Copadichromis ilesi is a modest-sized, fusiform utaka. FishBase, following Konings' description, gives a maximum of about 4.5 in standard length (SL) for males and 4.5 in SL for females; in the lake and aquarium, males reach roughly 6 in in total length (to around 6.5 in in captivity) while females stay near 4.5 in. The body is moderately deep (depth 2.6–2.9 times in SL) with a head 3.1–3.4 times in SL, and there are 16–17 dorsal spines, 10–12 dorsal soft rays, 3 anal spines and 10–11 anal soft rays, with 34–35 scales in a longitudinal series.

The species is sexually dichromatic in the classic utaka manner. Breeding males are dark — nearly black — with a creamy-white to yellow blaze across the head and upper body and dorsal fin; the description notes that geographic variation in the species is essentially restricted to the colour of that blaze. Females and non-breeding fish are a plain silvery grey. A useful field character is the absence of spots on the flanks. The dentition is sexually distinct too: males carry mostly unicuspid teeth in all rows, while females retain unequally bicuspid teeth in the outer rows and tricuspid teeth in the inner rows.

Habitat

Copadichromis ilesi is endemic to Lake Malawi (also called Lake Nyasa and Lake Niassa), the great rift lake shared by Malawi, Tanzania and Mozambique. The IUCN describes it as having a lake-wide distribution but being patchily recorded, with confirmed observations at Gome, Likoma Island, Mbowe Island and Cape Maclear in Malawi, and at Nkanda, Kirondo, Makonde and Cape Kaizer in Tanzania; the native range is given as Malawi and Tanzania. Konings' own account (via malawi.si) calls it very rare and localized, observed mainly near Gome Rock with sporadic records elsewhere.

It is a fish of the intermediate habitat — the transition zone where rock gives way to sand — and of the open water above it. FishBase records a depth range of about 23–98 ft, with most fish in the upper part of that band; the IUCN cites 33–98 ft. There is a clear depth split by sex and activity: territorial males build their spawning sites at roughly 82 ft or deeper, while mouthbrooding females move into shallower water but rarely venture above about 33 ft. Like all Malawi cichlids it lives in hard, alkaline rift-lake water that is warm and well-buffered in the surface layers.

Feeding

Copadichromis ilesi is a zooplanktivore — a plankton picker — in keeping with its membership of the utaka guild. The IUCN summarizes its diet simply as particulate matter taken from the water column, and Konings describes it as feeding almost exclusively in open water. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.4, consistent with a diet built on animal plankton (copepods and other drifting prey) rather than algae or detritus. Ecologically, the utaka are a key link in Lake Malawi's offshore food web, converting the lake's zooplankton production into fish biomass that feeds larger predators and, through the fishery, people.

Mating

Socially, Copadichromis ilesi follows the lek-like pattern typical of the open-water Malawi haplochromines. Outside of breeding it is generally peaceful and shoaling; males become territorial only in the breeding season, when they descend to deeper water and establish spawning sites. Those sites are spaced out — Konings records them roughly 7 ft apart — forming a loose arena over the sand-and-rock bottom where males display their dark bodies and pale head blaze to attract passing females. Females, drawn from the shallower water where the non-breeding fish stay, visit these territories to spawn. The bright cream-to-yellow blaze on the breeding male's head is the principal signal, and it is the one feature that varies geographically across the lake.

Breeding

Copadichromis ilesi is a maternal mouthbrooder, the standard Lake Malawi reproductive mode. What distinguishes it is the nest: rather than a simple sand bower, the male builds his spawning site under and against a rock or a small group of rocks, excavating the sand from beneath the rock and heaping it into a semicircular wall around the site, sometimes leaving only a narrow opening into the nest. These nests sit at about 82 ft depth or deeper and are spaced roughly 7 ft apart. After spawning in the male's nest, the female takes the eggs into her mouth and broods them; brooding and early-released fry are found in shallower water, generally not above about 33 ft. As with other utaka, the female carries and protects the developing young through to free-swimming fry without feeding, then releases them — clutch sizes for this particular species have not been documented in the literature.

In the aquarium

Copadichromis ilesi is a moderately demanding Lake Malawi cichlid best suited to keepers who already understand the basic requirements of the rift-lake haplochromines. Like all utaka it is a fish of open water, and tank size is the first consideration: a minimum of 71 in (six feet) in length is the practical floor for a single species or light community setup, and a larger footprint — 94.5 in or more — gives the males proper room to establish territory and allows females a genuine refuge. The swimming space matters as much as the volume: overcrowding with rock-work crowds out the mid-water column that these fish naturally occupy, so the aquascape should consist of a deep sand substrate (2–3 in of fine to medium sand), a modest backdrop of rocks at the ends and rear for cover and visual barriers, and a generous open sand plain across the center and front.

Water chemistry must replicate Lake Malawi conditions: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6, and hard, well-buffered water. In practice, moderately hard tap water in the neutral-to-alkaline range (general hardness 10–20 °dH, carbonate hardness 6–10 °dKH) is a serviceable starting point; rift-lake mineral salt mixes are widely available for softer tap water. Efficient filtration and a light stock density are non-negotiable because the deep, well-oxygenated open water of Malawi leaves these fish with no tolerance for accumulating waste. Weekly water changes of 25–30% keep nitrates in check without disturbing the hardness and pH. Temperature stability is at least as important as hitting a precise number — slow swings rather than rapid ones.

Copadichromis ilesi is far less aggressive than the mbuna (rock-dwelling) haplochromines, and it will not hold its own in a mixed community where boisterous species are constantly nipping and chasing. The best companions are other mid-sized, open-water or sand-dwelling Malawi haplochromines of broadly comparable temperament — Aulonocara, other Copadichromis species, or sand-cichlid Lethrinops — provided they occupy different visual niches and tank space is generous. Avoid pairing with large, assertive mbuna (Melanochromis, Labeotropheus, Pseudotropheus) as routine harassment will suppress feeding and breeding. A single male kept with three or four females produces natural social dynamics and reduces male-on-male conflict; with adequate space a second male can sometimes be accommodated if territory boundaries are clearly defined by rockwork.

Feeding in captivity is straightforward because Copadichromis ilesi is a zooplanktivore whose natural prey — copepods and small crustaceans — are replicated well by quality frozen foods (cyclops, Daphnia, brine shrimp, Mysis) and small-particle dried foods with high crustacean content. Spirulina-enriched flakes and pellets round out the diet and support immune function; the one food type to avoid is anything high in animal protein from warm-blooded sources (beef heart, for example), which utaka lack the gut physiology to handle safely over the long term. Feed small portions two to three times daily rather than a single large meal.

Breeding follows the maternal mouthbrooding pattern described for the species in the wild. Males in good condition will excavate a nest under a cave or flat rock and display to females with the characteristic dark body and pale head blaze. After the female picks up the eggs she should ideally be moved to a dedicated brooding tank or a large, well-planted refuge section of the display; in a busy community she risks being harassed into spitting the brood prematurely. Incubation runs roughly three to four weeks at 79–81 °F — a typical Malawi haplochromine timeline — after which the female releases fully-formed fry that can immediately accept newly-hatched brine shrimp and fine crumble foods. Removing the female to a quiet recovery tank after she releases the fry lets her regain condition before the next cycle. The most common keeper mistakes are housing this species in tanks that are too small, combining it with aggressive mbuna that outcompete it for food and space, and failing to maintain the hard alkaline chemistry that the species requires from birth.

Conservation

On the IUCN Red List, Copadichromis ilesi is assessed as Least Concern (assessed 22 June 2018 by Konings, Kazembe, Makocho and Mailosi; reviewed by Snoeks; published 2018, replacing a 2006 Least Concern listing). The justification is straightforward: the species is endemic to Lake Malawi but widespread across the lake, and no major widespread threats have been identified. The population trend is recorded as unknown. The one pressure flagged is fishing — as an utaka, it is targeted by fishermen using chirimila (open-water seine) nets, and subsistence fishing is listed as a threat — and it is also taken for the ornamental trade under the name "Virginalis Kajose."

The lake around it, however, cannot be ignored. Lake Malawi/Niassa/Nyasa is a system under increasing stress from sediment and nutrient loading off deforested catchments, intensifying fishing pressure, climate change and invasive-species risk. As a deep-water, plankton-dependent utaka with a naturally patchy, localized distribution, Copadichromis ilesi sits in exactly the guild that heavy open-water netting targets and depends on the very plankton production that lake warming and altered mixing can suppress. None of this has moved the species off Least Concern, and it would overstate the case to call it threatened — but its long-term security is tied to the health of a great lake that is, on current evidence, under growing strain.
