Taxonomy & naming
Copadichromis insularis was described by Jay R. Stauffer Jr. and Ad Konings in 2006, in their wide-ranging review of the genus Copadichromis published in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 17, number 1, pages 9–42) — the same paper that erected a new genus and six new species drawn from the lake's plankton-feeding cichlids. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the name as valid as Copadichromis insularis Stauffer & Konings, 2006, and FishBase carries the identical authority. The type locality is Chinyankwazi, an islet in the southern part of Lake Malawi, and the species sits in Copadichromis, the genus Eccles and Trewavas erected in their 1989 revision of the Malawian haplochromines, within the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae. Konings places it within the informal "Copadichromis mbenjii group" of closely related, three-spotted utaka — a cluster of look-alike species separated chiefly by the size and position of their lateral spots and by breeding-male colour. The genus name combines the Greek kopas, kopados ("carved") with chromis, the classical perch-like fish name long used as the standard suffix for cichlid genera; the species epithet is the Latin adjective insularis, "of islands," chosen because every known population occurs at islands rather than along the mainland coast.
Morphology
Copadichromis insularis is a fusiform, normally proportioned utaka — modest in size even by the standards of the guild. FishBase gives a maximum of about 4.5 in standard length; in the lake both sexes reach roughly 4.5 in, while aquarium males can grow somewhat larger, to about 5.5 in. The fin counts run 15–17 dorsal spines and 10–11 soft rays, with 3 anal spines and 8–9 anal soft rays. The diagnosis turns on the pattern of three lateral spots: a supra-pectoral spot, a supra-anal spot, and a caudal spot. In Copadichromis insularis the supra-pectoral spot is about 1.5 times the diameter of the supra-anal spot, and both the supra-pectoral and the supra-anal spots make contact with the upper lateral line — the combination that separates it from its close relatives in the mbenjii group. Sexual dichromatism is strong, in the usual Malawi pattern. Females and non-breeding fish are plainly coloured and marked mainly by the three dark spots, with no breeding finery. Breeding males transform: they carry a blue breast, a wide yellow marginal band along the anal fin, and a white margin to the dorsal fin, which — distinctively — shows no black submarginal band. The pale egg-spot ocelli typical of the lake's mouthbrooders sit on the anal fin.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Lake Malawi (also Lake Nyasa or Lake Niassa) and, within that vast rift lake, to the islands of its southern half: FishBase records it from the Maleri, Chinyankwazi and Chinyamwezi islands, with hobbyist field records also from nearby Chidunga and the Nakantenga area. It is a fish of the intermediate habitat — the zone where rock gives way to open sand — rather than the rocky reefs proper or the truly pelagic open water. It occurs over the sand/rock interface and over sandy patches around the islands at depths of roughly 13 to 18 metres. Females and non-territorial males hang in the water a metre or so above the bottom, while territorial males work the sand at the foot of the rocks. The water is the hard, alkaline, thermally stable medium typical of Malawi's surface layer: across the lake the upper water column runs to a pH of about 7.7 to 8.6, a carbonate hardness on the order of 4 to 6 dKH, and temperatures around 75–82 °F (75 to 82 °F). Its attachment to the island sand-and-rock fringe, rather than to true open water, keeps it largely out of reach of the pelagic seine fisheries that pressure the lake's deep-water utaka.
Feeding
Copadichromis insularis is a zooplanktivore — an open-water plankton picker that nonetheless stays close to structure. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.4. Females and non-territorial males gather in small groups of up to about ten individuals and feed on plankton in the water column one to three metres above the bottom, picking individual zooplankters — copepods and other small drifting animals — one at a time, in the manner of the rest of the utaka, using a small, highly protrusible mouth that fires forward as a suction tube. Unlike the truly pelagic utaka that shoal far out over open water, Copadichromis insularis confines this foraging to the water just above the island sand flats and reef edges, converting the lake's plankton production into fish biomass within a narrow band of habitat. That habit, together with its small size, gives it a low fishing vulnerability and keeps it off the radar of the chirimila open-water nets.
Mating
Socially the species follows the standard utaka template of shoaling females and territorial, bower-building males. Outside of spawning, females and immature fish travel in small loose groups close to the bottom, while mature males drop out to hold territories on the sand at the base of the rocks. A ready male signals his fitness through both colour and architecture: he excavates a spawning bowl from beneath a flat rock, then displays in full blue-breasted, white-margined breeding dress to draw females down from the passing groups. Rival males are driven off, making mature males territorial during the breeding period, but the species is otherwise calm by Malawi-cichlid standards — in the aquarium it is described as generally peaceful, with aggression largely confined to breeding males. The bower beneath the rock is both the courtship arena and the spawning site.
Breeding
Like virtually all Lake Malawi haplochromines, Copadichromis insularis is a maternal mouthbrooder with no paternal care. Territorial males build a spawning bowl beneath a flat rock, and spawning takes place underneath the rock itself. The female lays her eggs in batches and immediately takes each batch up into her mouth; drawn to the egg-spot ocelli on the male's anal fin, she nuzzles at them as the male releases milt, fertilising the clutch inside her mouth — the classic Malawi mechanism. She then carries the developing brood for roughly three weeks, not feeding during that time, before releasing free-swimming fry, which are not guarded once released. Broods are small, the norm for the genus, and generation length is on the order of a couple of years; FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with a minimum population doubling time under fifteen months. The combination of small, unguarded broods and a range confined to a few island fringes is part of why the species, though locally common, is so geographically concentrated.
In the aquarium
Copadichromis insularis is genuinely uncommon in the hobby. It is one of the less-traded members of the utaka group, and keepers who do find it are usually sourcing from specialist Malawi breeders rather than the general trade. That scarcity means most practical husbandry for the species is generalised from its close relatives in the Copadichromis mbenjii group and from the utaka guild at large — what follows is honest about that where species-specific data is thin.
The single most important commitment is space. A fish that forages in mid-water a metre or two above open sand needs horizontal swimming room, not just volume. A tank of at least 59 in in footprint is the floor for a single male with females; 71 in or more gives a full group space to school and a male room to hold territory without constant harassment. Depth of water matters less than run length. The substrate should be fine sand — the species excavates spawning bowls beneath rocks and fine sand is the natural digging medium. Scatter a few flat rocks to provide potential bower sites and visual breaks, but keep the centre of the tank clear: utaka are not mbuna, and a tank cluttered with rockwork frustrates them and strips away the open-water swimming that the fish requires.
Water chemistry must match the lake's surface layer. Target pH 7.8–8.5, a carbonate hardness of 4–8 dKH, and a temperature of 75–81 °F (75–81 °F). Malawi buffer mixes or small quantities of crushed coral in the sump will hold the alkalinity; the fish do not need ocean-salinity hardness, just the modest buffering capacity of a rift lake. Filtration should be robust — the lake is very clear and low in dissolved nutrients — and weekly water changes of 20–30% are the standard recommendation for Malawi setups.
The diet is the point most commonly mishandled. Copadichromis insularis is a zooplanktivore: in the lake it picks individual copepods and small crustaceans from the open water column. High-protein pellets formulated for carnivorous cichlids, or staple foods with substantial mammalian protein, put these fish at elevated risk of Malawi bloat — a rapid, often fatal gut-and-organ inflammation that hits utaka and other plankton-feeders with little warning. The correct staple is a quality spirulina-based or herbivore/omnivore pellet supplemented with frozen cyclops, daphnia, or brine shrimp. Bloodworm and earthworm-based foods should be offered sparingly or avoided; the digestive system of a planktivore is not well suited to very rich animal protein.
As tankmates, Copadichromis insularis is calm enough to be kept with other peaceable Lake Malawi haplochromines ("haps") and Aulonocara peacocks of similar size. It should not be housed with aggressive mbuna, which will harry the more passive utaka into chronic stress. In a mixed Malawi display, it is best paired with other mid-water species of roughly comparable adult size. Males are territorial only while breeding; outside that context the species shoals acceptably with its own kind. Breeding in captivity follows the same bower-and-mouthbrood pattern described in the wild — a pair or a harem group (one male, two or three females) is workable, and a female carrying a brood is best moved to a quiet holding tank for the three-week incubation if fry survival is a priority. Because the species is infrequently bred in captivity and seldom available as captive-raised stock, keepers who succeed in raising a brood have a tangible contribution to make to the hobby supply.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Copadichromis insularis as Least Concern, assessed on 22 June 2018 by Ad Konings. It carries no CITES listing and is rated harmless to humans. The Least Concern status reflects a fish that, while narrowly distributed, is locally abundant and faces no documented population-level threat: its low fishing vulnerability (rated 10 of 100 by FishBase) and its habit of feeding over the island sand-and-rock fringe rather than in true open water keep it largely clear of the seine fisheries that target the lake's pelagic plankton-feeders. None of this makes an island-restricted endemic invulnerable. A species confined to the sand flats of a few southern islands has no distant second population to fall back on, and Lake Malawi as a whole faces mounting pressure from sediment and nutrient loading, intensifying fisheries, and a warming, increasingly stratified water column that can starve deeper habitats of oxygen. The accurate reading is the careful one — a currently secure, locally common utaka whose long-term fate is tied to the health of a small set of island habitats in the south of the lake.
