Aphyocheirodon hemigrammus was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1915. The genus Aphyocheirodon belongs to the subfamily Cheirodontinae within the family Characidae, a placement confirmed by phylogenetic work on small South American characins. ETYFish notes that the genus name combines the Greek aphýē (small fry) with a diminutive form of Cheirodon, the type genus of the subfamily, indicating the small stature of these fishes; the type series measured 1.5–2 in. Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer/CAS) is the governing authority for the valid name Aphyocheirodon hemigrammus Eigenmann, 1915.
The species epithet hemigrammus derives from the Greek hemi- (half) and grammus (line), referring to the median dusky stripe associated with a narrow silvery line on the posterior half of the body — a direct description of the fish's most visible marking. The epithet is not to be confused with the genus Hemigrammus, which belongs to a different characid lineage; Aphyocheirodon is firmly placed within Cheirodontinae.

Given its Vulnerable status and restricted wild range, any specimens entering the hobby would ideally originate from captive breeding rather than wild collection. Aquarists working with closely related cheirodontine genera such as Serrapinnus or Odontostilbe would find broadly transferable care knowledge, though species-specific husbandry data for this species remains absent from published hobby literature.
Conservation
