Bryconamericus coeruleus was described by Jerep and Shibatta in 2017. The valid name, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS), is Bryconamericus coeruleus Jerep & Shibatta, 2017. The type locality is in the upper Paraná River drainage of Brazil. Because the species was described and currently remains in Bryconamericus, the authority is not parenthetical.
Bryconamericus is a large neotropical genus in the family Characidae, the most diverse family of freshwater fishes in the Americas. The genus has undergone repeated revisions as molecular and morphological work clarifies limits between it and allied genera; a 2023 revision available through ResearchGate addressed Pacific coastal and Amazon drainages, illustrating the ongoing taxonomic flux within the group. B. coeruleus belongs to the upper Paraná contingent of the genus and appears to be restricted to that basin.
Morphology
Bryconamericus coeruleus is a slender, fusiform characid reaching approximately 2.5 in standard length (SL) according to FishBase, with literature records from Neotropical Ichthyology suggesting average lengths of 3–4 in, likely reflecting total length (TL) measurements. The discrepancy is consistent with the SL-to-TL difference typical of Bryconamericus and related genera.
The specific epithet coeruleus — Latin for sky-blue — refers to a bluish or iridescent sheen on the flanks that distinguishes it from congeners. Like other members of the genus, it has a relatively small head, a terminal mouth, and the characteristic small adipose fin of the family Characidae. Sexual dimorphism is subtle in this genus; females tend to be deeper-bodied when gravid, though data specific to this species are sparse.
Habitat
Bryconamericus coeruleus is endemic to the upper Paraná River basin in Brazil. Within that drainage it occurs in small to medium streams, with a strong association with pools immediately downstream of rapids and with areas of bank vegetation. This microhabitat preference — sheltered, oxygenated water close to streamside cover — is consistent across many upper-Paraná Bryconamericus species.
Water chemistry at collection sites documented in the literature is soft and mildly acidic: a pH of approximately 6 and water temperatures around 73 °F are recorded for upper-Paraná tributaries supporting this species. Feeding
Bryconamericus coeruleus is an omnivore, taking small invertebrates and plant matter in the wild — a dietary profile typical of the genus and of small characids in Paraná tributaries more broadly. Gut-content studies of Bryconamericus in the upper Paraná system generally record a mix of aquatic insects and their larvae, small crustaceans, algae, and detritus, with the proportions varying by season and locality.
The species is likely an opportunistic forager that exploits whatever is available in the water column and at the surface, consistent with its microhabitat in pools after rapids where invertebrate drift is concentrated.
Mating
Like other small characids in the upper Paraná, Bryconamericus coeruleus is an egg-scattering, open spawner. Spawning is reported to occur during the rainy season, when rising water levels and increased flow inundate marginal vegetation and shallow areas, providing both spawning substrate and food for newly hatched larvae — a pattern common across Neotropical characids that time reproduction to seasonal flooding.

Fry are small at hatching and require infusoria or similarly fine first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.
In the aquarium
Bryconamericus coeruleus is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby and is not currently established in trade. Wild-caught specimens might occasionally appear through specialist importers of upper-Paraná stream fishes, but aquarium records are essentially absent from the hobbyist literature. Its small size (to approximately 2.5 in SL), peaceful temperament inferred from the genus, and tolerance of cool, soft, slightly acidic water make it a biologically suitable candidate for a well-planted stream-biotope aquarium.
Any captive specimens would logically be kept in groups of six or more in a moderately sized tank with gentle flow, fine-leaved plants, and open swimming space. Water parameters reflecting the upper Paraná — around 72–75 °F, pH in the low 6s, soft to moderately soft — would best match the species' natural conditions. A diet of varied small foods including frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, and quality micro-pellets would serve the species' omnivorous needs.
