Taxonomy & naming
Bryconamericus iheringii was described by George A. Boulenger in 1887, based on material from Brazil. The parenthetical authority in the valid name indicates that Boulenger originally placed it in a different genus; subsequent revisions transferred it to Bryconamericus, where it currently stands. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the authority for the valid name as currently used.
Bryconamericus is a large, speciose genus of small characids distributed widely across South America, particularly in the river basins of the Atlantic slope. The genus belongs to the family Characidae, the largest family in the order Characiformes and one of the most species-rich families of vertebrates worldwide. Placement of individual species within Bryconamericus has been revised multiple times as molecular and morphological analyses have refined the phylogeny of small Neotropical characids; B. iheringii is associated with the Paraná system fauna.
Morphology
Bryconamericus iheringii is a small, slender-bodied tetra reaching approximately 1 in standard length. The body is laterally compressed and moderately elongate, with the fusiform shape typical of small schooling characids that inhabit moderate currents. Colouration is silvery, often with a faint lateral stripe or midlateral silvery band running from behind the operculum toward the caudal peduncle, and the fins are largely hyaline.
As with most small Bryconamericus, the species lacks the bold patterning of more ornamental tetras. Sexual dimorphism is not strongly marked externally at typical sizes; females may appear slightly deeper-bodied when gravid. The lack of elaborate colour or patterning is characteristic of the genus and reflects the cryptic, mid-water schooling lifestyle these fish adopt in their natural streams.
Habitat
Bryconamericus iheringii is known from the upper Paraná River drainage in southern Brazil. It inhabits clear, cool to warm tributaries and slow-moving streams, typically over substrates of leaf litter, sand, and fine gravel, with submerged vegetation and marginal cover providing refuge and foraging sites. The Paraná basin in this region is characterised by well-oxygenated water draining from the Brazilian highlands, with generally clear conditions outside of the rainy season.
Water conditions in the upper Paraná tributaries associated with B. iheringii are slightly acidic to neutral, with pH reported in the range of approximately 5.5–7.0 and temperatures in the tropical range of 75–82 °F (75–82 °F). The streams this species occupies are often shaded by gallery forest, maintaining cooler and more stable temperatures than exposed lowland habitats.
Feeding
Bryconamericus iheringii is omnivorous, as is typical for the genus. In its natural habitat it forages on small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and similar organisms — as well as plant material, algae, and fine organic detritus. Small schooling characids in leaf-litter streams exploit a broad trophic range, taking whatever is available in the water column and near the substrate.
In the aquarium, where it is rarely kept, it would be expected to accept a wide variety of small prepared foods — micro pellets, finely crushed flake, and small frozen foods such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and Cyclops — in keeping with its opportunistic feeding behaviour in the wild.
Mating
Bryconamericus iheringii spawns by the open egg-scattering mode characteristic of most characids. Mature adults scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation and over substrate in shallow, slow-moving stream reaches. There is no parental care; adults take no interest in eggs or larvae after spawning. Males likely exhibit no elaborate courtship display, and spawning appears to be a social, group activity rather than a tightly paired event, consistent with the schooling lifestyle of the genus.
Seasonal spawning cues in the wild probably relate to rising water temperatures and the onset of the rainy season, which increases water levels and floods marginal vegetation, providing additional spawning sites and food resources for larvae.
Breeding
Specific captive-breeding records for Bryconamericus iheringii are sparse given its rarity in the hobby, but the reproductive biology of the genus follows the standard small-characid pattern. Eggs scattered among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops are adhesive and relatively small; they hatch within a few days at tropical temperatures, producing tiny larvae that absorb their yolk sac before becoming free-swimming and beginning exogenous feeding.
Adults show no parental care and will consume eggs given the opportunity, so in a breeding setup the adults should be removed after spawning or eggs transferred to a separate rearing vessel. First foods for newly free-swimming fry would need to be very small — infusoria or commercial liquid fry food — before transitioning to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and finely powdered prepared foods.
In the aquarium
Bryconamericus iheringii is essentially absent from the mainstream aquarium hobby and is not commercially available through normal trade channels. As a small, modestly coloured South American characid, it holds limited appeal for the general hobbyist compared with more ornamental tetras from the same continent. Specialist keepers interested in biotope aquaria representing the upper Paraná drainage might encounter it in targeted collection or through ichthyological contacts in Brazil.
Its husbandry would follow the standard approach for small, schooling South American tetras: a well-planted aquarium with gentle filtration and some flow, slightly soft to neutral water at 75–82 °F (75–82 °F), and a varied diet of small foods. Given its small adult size, it should be kept in a group with similarly sized, peaceful tankmates, and provided with cover in the form of fine plants or leaf litter to replicate its natural stream environment.
Conservation
Bryconamericus iheringii has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is currently classified as Not Evaluated (NE). Many small, endemic South American characids in the Paraná drainage occupy a similar position — too numerous, too little studied, or too narrowly specialised to attract the resources needed for a full IUCN assessment, despite often having restricted natural ranges.
The upper Paraná basin has experienced significant habitat modification through dam construction, agricultural runoff, and riparian deforestation over the past several decades. These pressures affect small stream-dwelling characids broadly, but without a formal assessment or population monitoring for B. iheringii specifically, its conservation status remains uncertain. The species' continued presence in clean, intact upper-basin tributaries will depend on the health of the broader upper Paraná watershed.
