Bunocephalus larai is a diminutive banjo catfish from the upper Paraná basin of Brazil, one of many small, flattened, sand-coloured Aspredinidae that spend their days motionless on the riverbed and are easily mistaken for a dead leaf or a piece of gravel. Taxonomy & naming

Bunocephalus larai was described by the German-Brazilian naturalist Rodolpho von Ihering in 1930. It belongs to the family Aspredinidae — the banjo catfishes — within the genus Bunocephalus, a group of small, flattened South American catfish long known for being difficult to tell apart on external appearance alone.

The species was redescribed alongside the newly named Bunocephalus hertzi in a 2020 Zootaxa paper, which clarified the characters separating B. larai from its close relatives: the length of the maxillary barbel (73.7–84.6% of head length), four bony protuberances on the skull, ten principal caudal-fin rays (versus nine in B. minerim), and the absence of an epiphyseal bar, a feature it shares only with B. hertzi and B. minerim. This kind of fine morphological work is typical of the genus, where many species look superficially alike and were historically confused or lumped together. The Catalog of Fishes treats Bunocephalus larai as the valid name, with no evidence in the available sources that it was ever placed in another genus.

Morphology

Bunocephalus larai is tiny even by banjo-catfish standards, reaching a maximum length of only about 2 in. Like other members of the genus it has the classic "banjo" silhouette: a broad, flattened, disc-like head and forebody tapering abruptly into a long, slender, rounded tail, giving the whole animal the outline of the instrument that gives the family its common name.

The skin is entirely scaleless and instead studded with small tubercles and rough plates typical of Aspredinidae, an adaptation that helps the fish blend into sand, leaf litter and detritus on the riverbed. As in all catfish this naked skin makes it considerably more sensitive to copper and many medications than a scaled fish, a point that matters more than usual given how little margin such a small species has. Diagnostic features separating B. larai from close relatives include a long maxillary barbel, four bony protuberances on the skull, and ten principal caudal-fin rays. Bunocephalus species also carry small, sharp pectoral spines that, while nowhere near as formidable as those of larger catfish, can still lock and snag in a net.

Habitat

The type locality of Bunocephalus larai is the Rio Piracicaba, a tributary of the Rio Tietê in the upper Paraná basin, São Paulo State, Brazil. Records extend the species' known distribution across other upper Paraná drainages, including the Rio Tietê, the Rio Paranapanema system (Rio Tibagi), several tributaries of the Rio Paranaíba, and the Rio Paraná itself near the mouth of the Rio Sucuri.

As a member of a genus whose species rest motionless on the substrate by day, B. larai is almost certainly found over sand, silt or leaf-litter bottoms in slow to moderate current, though detailed habitat notes specific to this species are not available in the sources consulted. In the aquarium

Bunocephalus larai stays extremely small — around 2 in maximum — so it is not a fish that outgrows a modest setup, but its needs are still specific. Seriously Fish notes that banjo catfish of this genus do well in a tank of around 23.5 in, kept dim, with a soft sand substrate for burrowing and plenty of cover from bogwood and rockwork. It is nocturnal, peaceful and largely inactive by day, so it is easy to overlook or overfeed by mistake if its presence in the tank is forgotten.

As with all scaleless catfish, medication should be dosed conservatively, since copper and many standard treatments are harder on naked-skinned fish than on scaled species — a consideration that carries extra weight for a fish this small. Handle it gently rather than by hard netting, both because of its small locking pectoral spines and because a fish this size and this cryptic is easily stressed or injured. Tankmates should be small and peaceful; anything large enough to see this fish as food, or boisterous enough to out-compete it for food after dark, is a poor match.

The IUCN Red List assesses Bunocephalus larai as Least Concern, based on an assessment dated 7 November 2018. The species is known from multiple river systems within the upper Paraná basin in Brazil — the Rio Tietê, Rio Paranapanema/Rio Tibagi, several Rio Paranaíba tributaries, and the Rio Paraná mainstem — suggesting a reasonably wide distribution within that basin rather than a single isolated population.
