Taxonomy & naming

Brachyalestes jacksonii was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1912, based on material collected from Lake Tanganyika. The authority is parenthetical because Boulenger originally placed the species in a different genus; subsequent taxonomic revision transferred it to Brachyalestes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name.

The genus Brachyalestes belongs to the family Alestidae — the African tetras — a group of characiform fishes distributed across sub-Saharan Africa and distinct from the Neotropical tetras of South America. Alestids share the characteristic adipose fin and general body plan of characins but are entirely an African radiation. Brachyalestes is a moderately diverse genus of elongate, schooling alestids found in rivers, lakes, and lake-outlet systems across East and Central Africa.

Morphology

Brachyalestes jacksonii is a slender, fusiform fish typical of open-water schooling alestids. FishBase records a maximum standard length of approximately 4.5 in, making it a relatively large representative of its genus. The body is laterally compressed and streamlined, with a forked caudal fin suited to sustained, active swimming. Coloration is likely silvery to olive-silver with a subtle lateral sheen, consistent with other pelagic-schooling alestids; detailed colour notes from live specimens are sparse in the available literature.

The species possesses the adipose fin characteristic of the Alestidae, small to moderate scales, and a terminal mouth with small teeth. As with many alestids, sexual dimorphism in external morphology is not prominently described; size differences between sexes may be present but data are limited.

Habitat

Brachyalestes jacksonii is native to Lake Tanganyika and adjacent river systems of East Africa. Lake Tanganyika is the world's second-deepest lake and one of the oldest and most biodiverse, straddling the borders of Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, and Zambia. The species favours clear, well-oxygenated water, consistent with the lake's famously transparent inshore and pelagic zones.

Water temperatures in Lake Tanganyika's upper water column typically range from around 75–82 °F near the surface, with the lake being warm year-round at depth. The lake is notable for its hard, slightly alkaline chemistry — a product of its ancient, carbonate-rich basin — with pH generally in the 7.5 to 9.0 range. Brachyalestes jacksonii schools in this environment, likely occupying the open column and littoral margins rather than deep or profundal zones.

Feeding

FishBase records Brachyalestes jacksonii as feeding on small crustaceans and insects, a diet consistent with the feeding ecology of other alestids that exploit the open water column and surface film. Schooling behaviour facilitates the exploitation of concentrated prey aggregations — swarms of chironomid midges and emergent insects are an important resource for many Tanganyikan fishes.

In the aquarium, close relatives readily accept a varied diet of small live and frozen invertebrates — Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm — supplemented with good-quality flake or small pellets. Offering a variety of foods that approximate natural invertebrate prey will help maintain condition and encourage natural foraging behaviour in a school.

Mating

Specific courtship observations for Brachyalestes jacksonii are not documented in the available literature. By analogy with other alestids, the species is expected to be an open-water egg-scatterer with no parental care. Males in breeding condition may display to females with lateral presentations or chasing behaviour, and spawning likely takes place in the open water column or over fine-leaved vegetation or submerged structure.

For aquarists wishing to attempt spawning, the standard alestid approach would apply: condition adults on a protein-rich live and frozen diet, provide fine-leaved plants or spawning mops as a substrate, and separate adults from eggs promptly to prevent predation. Incubation times and fry requirements are not documented for this species; by analogy with other Brachyalestes, hatching would be expected within a few days at typical Tanganyikan temperatures, and fry would require small foods such as infusoria or rotifers before graduating to larger items.

In the aquarium

Brachyalestes jacksonii is rarely encountered in the ornamental trade and is not a commonly kept species, but its large schooling behaviour, robust size, and Tanganyikan origins make it potentially interesting to the specialist East African cichlid or rift-lake aquarist. A large tank — ideally 59 in or more in length — with ample open swimming space would suit its active, schooling nature. A group of at least six fish is recommended to allow the formation of a cohesive school and to distribute any inter-fish aggression.

Water chemistry should reflect the species' Tanganyikan origins: moderately hard to hard, alkaline water with pH in the 7.5 to 8.5 range and temperatures in the 75–79 °F range. Good filtration and oxygenation are important — this is a fish of clear, oxygen-rich water. Suitable tankmates would include other rift-lake species comfortable in alkaline water, though care should be taken to avoid aggressive cichlids that might harass a schooling mid-water fish. Feeding is straightforward, with the species accepting a variety of invertebrate-based foods.

Conservation

Brachyalestes jacksonii has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no evaluation status. Lake Tanganyika itself, however, is subject to increasing environmental pressure: overfishing, sedimentation from catchment deforestation, and the effects of climate-driven warming on the lake's thermal stratification and productivity are all documented threats to the lake's fish community.

Species associated with the open-water and littoral zones of Lake Tanganyika have an inherently narrow global range, being confined to a single lake basin. Although no specific conservation concern has been flagged for B. jacksonii, the general trajectory of Lake Tanganyika's ecology warrants attention for all species endemic to or closely associated with it.
