Hemibrycon decurrens was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1913 from material collected in the Magdalena River basin of Colombia. Eigenmann, working from Indiana University and the Carnegie Museum, produced a series of comprehensive neotropical fish surveys in the early twentieth century that remain foundational references for South American characid taxonomy. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Hemibrycon decurrens (Eigenmann, 1913); the parenthetical authority indicates the species was originally described in a different genus before being transferred to Hemibrycon.
The genus Hemibrycon is a speciose group of South American characids distributed across Andean foothills and associated lowland drainages from Venezuela south to Bolivia. The specific epithet decurrens is Latin for 'curved downward' or 'running down', referring to the arrangement of scale rows on the body: ETYFish records that the name describes the interpolated rows of scales beginning over the middle of the ventral region, with those rows distinctly decurvent (running downward) toward the anal fin — a scale-row geometry that Eigenmann used as a diagnostic character.
Morphology
Hemibrycon decurrens reaches a maximum recorded size of 2 in standard length, placing it among the smaller members of the genus. In the aquarium
Hemibrycon decurrens does not appear in the aquarium trade in any meaningful quantity and is essentially unknown to hobbyists. No dedicated care profiles or husbandry guides exist for this species, and it has not been imported commercially to any significant degree. Aquarists are unlikely to encounter it in any fish shop.
Should specimens become available, a starting point for husbandry would be conditions reflecting the lower Magdalena basin: tropical temperatures in the range of 75–82 °F, neutral to slightly soft water (pH approximately 6.5–7.5), and a planted tank with open swimming space. At 2 in SL maximum it is a small fish that would suit a community setup of similarly sized, peaceful characids and other small schooling fish. In the complete absence of established hobbyist knowledge, any keeper of this species would be working largely from first principles informed by the genus and the broader Magdalena community of fishes.
Conservation

The lower Magdalena basin is among the most heavily modified river systems in Colombia, subject to decades of deforestation in the catchment, agricultural runoff, sedimentation, urban effluent, and periodic oil spills. These pressures affect a wide range of Magdalena fish species, some of which are genuinely threatened. Whether H. decurrens is sensitive to these disturbances, or whether its populations remain stable across the large geographic scope of the lower basin, is simply not known. Targeted surveys to establish its current distribution, abundance, and habitat requirements would be the necessary first step toward a substantive conservation assessment.
