Hemibrycon dentatus was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1913, in Indiana University Studies No. 18, page 19. The type locality is Piedra de Moler, Colombia, and the holotype is catalogued as FMNH 56253. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name as Hemibrycon dentatus (Eigenmann, 1913), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the original placement of the species in a different genus before its current assignment. The family placement recognised by the Catalog of Fishes is Stevardiidae, subfamily Hemibryconinae, though the species is commonly listed under Characidae in aggregator databases and regional checklists.

The genus Hemibrycon is a diverse South American characin lineage, and modern phylogenetic studies — including comparisons of H. dentatus with congeners such as H. metae and H. huambonicus — continue to refine species boundaries using lateral line scale counts, anal-fin ray numbers, and other morphometric and meristic characters. H. dentatus is confirmed as a distinct, valid species in current literature. Its presence across multiple river units in northern Colombia is documented in the Checklist of Freshwater Fishes of Colombia (ZooKeys).

Distinguishing H. dentatus from its congeners relies on meristic counts — specifically the number of scales in the lateral line and the number of rays in the anal fin — which characterise this genus and underpin the systematic revisions used in modern literature. Colouration in life is typical of the genus: a silvery body with a dark lateral band running from behind the operculum to the caudal peduncle, an ocellus or dark spot at the caudal fin base, and variable iridescence depending on angle and light. Hemibrycon dentatus is rarely encountered in the ornamental fish trade and is not an established aquarium fish. Its close relatives — other Hemibrycon species and allied Colombian stream characins — suggest it would do best in a roomy aquarium with good water movement and high oxygenation, replicating the fast-flowing, clear Andean-foothill streams it inhabits in the wild. A species suited to similar conditions: neutral to slightly acidic, soft to moderately hard water in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, strong filtration, and a substrate of fine gravel or sand with some smooth stones.

As a schooling fish — Hemibrycon species are typically found in groups — it should be kept in groups of six or more to reduce stress and elicit natural behaviour. Peaceful tankmates of a similar size would be appropriate; boisterous or much larger fish should be avoided. The species' rarity in the hobby means husbandry guidance is limited, and care standards inferred from congeners and ecological context should be adapted as direct experience accumulates. Any wild-caught specimens would require careful acclimation, as Colombian stream fish are accustomed to high water quality and brisk current.

Conservation

Hemibrycon dentatus was assessed by the IUCN Red List in October 2014 and received a status of Least Concern (LC). The assessment reflects a distribution across several rivers in the Cauca basin of northern Colombia — the upper San Jorge, Cesar, and Orihueca — with no identified major threat causing a decline sufficient to qualify for a threatened category at the time of assessment.

Nonetheless, the Andean foothills and lowland drainages of northern Colombia face significant and ongoing pressures: deforestation of riparian zones, agricultural runoff, gold and coal mining activity in parts of the Cauca watershed, and modification of river hydrology. Stream-dependent endemics with restricted ranges within this basin can be sensitive to these localised impacts even when not captured in region-wide IUCN assessments. The 2014 assessment predates more than a decade of continued land-use change in the region, and an updated evaluation would be valuable for tracking the species' current status. Protecting intact stream habitat in the Andean foothills of Colombia remains the key conservation measure for H. dentatus and the broader freshwater fish assemblage it shares those waters with.
