Hemibrycon divisorensis is a slender, mid-sized characin endemic to the río Tapiche drainage of Loreto, Peru, where it inhabits narrow, crystalline tributaries draining the Zona Reservada Sierra del Divisor. Described in 2007 from material collected in streams just 2–3 metres wide with sandy beds and moderate current, it remains one of the least-known members of its genus — assessed by the IUCN as Data Deficient and represented by zero public observations in global citizen-science databases. Its restricted distribution and interest to the ornamental-fish trade make it a species worth watching closely as survey effort in the Sierra del Divisor region improves.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemibrycon divisorensis was formally described by Bertaco, Malabarba, Hidalgo & Ortega in 2007. The holotype is a male of 2.5 in standard length collected from the río Tapiche drainage — a tributary of the río Ucayali — in the department of Loreto, Peru, within the area then designated Zona Reservada Sierra del Divisor. Paratypes span 1.5–3 in SL. The valid name as treated in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Hemibrycon divisorensis Bertaco, Malabarba, Hidalgo & Ortega, 2007.

The genus Hemibrycon belongs to the large characid tribe Stevardiinae and is distributed across Andean and sub-Andean drainages of South America. H. divisorensis is distinguished within the genus principally by a wide, black, asymmetrical spot on the caudal fin and a dark band across the caudal peduncle — characters noted in the original description as reliable for field identification. The species is known only from the right margin of the río Tapiche system and has not been recorded from other drainages.

Morphology

H. divisorensis is a torpedo-shaped characin reaching approximately 2.5–3 in standard length, typical of the mid-sized Hemibrycon species found in Andean foothill streams. The dorsal fin carries ii,8 rays and the anal fin 25–28 rays — meristic values recorded in the original description and reflected in FishBase data. The body is laterally compressed and silvery, consistent with the pelagic lifestyle the species exhibits in the wild.

The most distinctive external feature is the caudal-fin pigmentation: a broad, black, asymmetrical spot occupying the caudal lobes combined with a dark band across the caudal peduncle. This marking sets it apart from several sympatric or parapatric congeners. Males additionally bear bony hooks on the rays of the dorsal, anal, pectoral, and pelvic fins — a sexually dimorphic character widespread in Stevardiinae and useful for sexing preserved and live specimens.

Habitat

The type locality and all known collection sites of H. divisorensis lie within the río Tapiche drainage of the Loreto region, northeastern Peru, in tributaries of the upper Ucayali system draining the Sierra del Divisor massif. The streams where the species was collected were described by the original authors as approximately 2–3 metres wide with crystalline water, sandy substrate, and medium current — small, clear-water channels typical of Andean foothill terrain at low to moderate elevation.

This habitat profile places the species in a transitional zone between true Andean streams and the várzea lowlands, a belt of rivers that supports high characid diversity. The restriction to the right bank tributaries of the Tapiche and the absence of records from adjacent drainages suggests either genuine distributional limits or inadequate sampling across the broader Sierra del Divisor region, which remains poorly explored ichthyologically.

Feeding

FishBase classifies H. divisorensis as insectivorous, consistent with the trophic guild of most small-to-mid-sized Hemibrycon species in Andean foothill streams. In that environment the diet would be expected to centre on aquatic invertebrate larvae, terrestrial insects falling onto the water surface, and other small invertebrates drifting in the current — resources typical of clear, fast-to-moderate water over sand.

No published stomach-content studies are available specifically for this species, so extrapolation from congeners and from the general Stevardiinae literature must stand in for direct dietary data. In the aquarium, Hemibrycon species generally accept small live and frozen foods readily, along with good-quality dried foods of appropriate size.

Mating

H. divisorensis reproduces by external fertilisation with aquasperm — a condition confirmed by sperm ultrastructure data reported in the original description, which established that the species is non-inseminating despite belonging to Stevardiinae, a clade that includes internally inseminating genera. This makes it a straightforward egg-scattering spawner rather than a species with the complex internal fertilisation seen in some stevardiine relatives.

Males are identifiable by the presence of bony hooks on multiple paired and median fins. These hooks, found broadly across stevardiine characins, are thought to function in male–male competition or in maintaining close contact with the female during spawning. No direct observations of courtship or spawning behaviour in the wild have been published for this species.

Breeding

As a non-inseminating stevardiine, H. divisorensis is expected to follow the egg-scattering mode common to most Hemibrycon: adults release adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation or over substrate during brief, vigorous spawning events, with no subsequent parental care. Eggs and larvae would be left to develop on their own in the stream environment.

No captive breeding records for this species have been published in the available literature. Given the species' restricted range and its appearance in ornamental-fish trade sources, it is possible that specimens reach specialist collectors, but documented aquarium reproduction has not been reported. Aquarists working with the species would likely apply the husbandry protocols used for other Hemibrycon and mid-sized Stevardiinae, conditioning fish with live and frozen foods and providing fine-leaved plants or spawning mops as egg-deposition sites.

In the aquarium

H. divisorensis appears sporadically in the ornamental-fish trade under the common name Sierra del Divisor characin, noted in conservation literature as a species collected for aquarium use. Its natural habitat of clear, well-oxygenated streams with moderate current suggests it would benefit from good water movement, clean water, and a sandy or fine-gravel substrate in the aquarium.

As with most mid-sized riverine characins, it would be expected to do best in a species school of six or more individuals, with tankmates of comparable size and temperament. Precise temperature, pH, and hardness data for the Tapiche tributary streams are not documented in the available literature; the broader Ucayali system is a soft, slightly acidic to neutral water environment, and conditions in the 75–82 °F range and moderately soft to neutral pH would represent a reasonable starting point. The species' scarcity in the hobby means that detailed husbandry experience has not been widely published.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed H. divisorensis as Data Deficient (DD) in April 2014, reflecting the very limited distributional and population information available at that time. The species is known from a narrow range — only the right-bank tributaries of the río Tapiche in Loreto — and has attracted interest from the ornamental-fish trade. Whether collection pressure or habitat alteration within the Sierra del Divisor region poses a meaningful threat cannot be determined without more survey data.

The Zona Reservada Sierra del Divisor, the type locality, was subsequently elevated to a national park (Parque Nacional Sierra del Divisor, established 2015), which in principle affords some protection to the headwater streams where the species was first collected. The iNaturalist database records zero public observations, underscoring how rarely the species is encountered by non-specialist collectors and how much remains unknown about its distribution, abundance, and ecology. A reassessment with fresh field data would be a meaningful contribution to the species' conservation standing.
