Hemibrycon fasciatus is a small characid described from the upper San Juan River drainage on the Pacific versant of Colombia, representing one of several stream-dwelling species in a genus that ranges widely across Andean and sub-Andean drainages of South America. Known primarily from type material, it reaches around 3.5 in in standard length and occupies the clear, fast-flowing freshwaters typical of montane and piedmont characid habitat. Taxonomy & naming

Hemibrycon fasciatus was described by Román-Valencia, Ruiz-C., Taphorn P., Mancera-Rodriguez, and García-Alzate, with the original description published in ZooKeys (vol. 454, pp. 109–125). The type locality is the upper San Juan River drainage, Pacific versant, Colombia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name.

The genus Hemibrycon belongs to the family Characidae and encompasses a large number of small to medium-sized stream characids distributed across Andean, sub-Andean, and lowland river drainages of South America. Species are diagnosed primarily by meristic characters — scale counts, fin-ray counts, and the number of scales above and below the lateral line — along with details of dentition and body proportions. The formal description of H. fasciatus compared the new species with its congeners to establish its diagnostic suite of characters, and type material is deposited in Colombian natural history collections.

The specific epithet fasciatus (Latin: banded) alludes to the lateral colour pattern, which typically includes a dark longitudinal stripe or band along the side of the body, a common feature among Hemibrycon and other small stream characids.

Morphology

Hemibrycon fasciatus is a slender, somewhat laterally compressed characid reaching approximately 3.5 in in standard length, the measurement used in ichthyological descriptions of this genus. Like other members of Hemibrycon, it has the elongate body and moderate fin development characteristic of active mid-water and benthopelagic stream fish.

The colour pattern that gives the species its name includes a distinct dark lateral band or fascia running along the flank. The head is relatively small, the mouth terminal, and the dentition is bicuspid as is typical in the genus. Detailed morphometric and meristic data distinguishing H. fasciatus from its closest congeners are provided in the original description, where scale counts, fin-ray formulae, and body proportions were documented from type specimens. Sexual dimorphism, if present, has not been described in the available literature for this species.

Habitat

The original description places Hemibrycon fasciatus in the upper San Juan River drainage on the Pacific versant of Colombia — a region of Andean and piedmont streams draining westward into the Pacific coastal lowlands. FishBase additionally records the species from the Nare River drainage of the Magdalena River basin; if confirmed, this would indicate a broader distribution across both Atlantic and Pacific versant drainages of the Colombian Andes, though the primary type-locality record is from the San Juan drainage.

Habitat for Hemibrycon species in the Colombian Andes and Pacific versant typically consists of clear to lightly turbid, well-oxygenated streams with moderate to fast current, gravel or rocky substrates, and riparian vegetation providing shade and organic input. These piedmont and foothill streams are freshwater, benthopelagic environments in the tropical zone. Specific water-chemistry parameters for the type-locality streams of H. fasciatus have not been published in the available sources, but Andean Pacific-slope streams in Colombia are generally soft to moderately hard, near-neutral to slightly acidic, and cool relative to lowland Amazonian waters.

Feeding

No dedicated feeding study of Hemibrycon fasciatus has been published, and the species' diet has not been described in the original description or in subsequent literature in the available sources. Hemibrycon species broadly are regarded as opportunistic omnivores and microphages in the stream environment, consuming small invertebrates — insect larvae, aquatic microcrustaceans, and terrestrial insects falling onto the water surface — as well as algae and organic detritus.

In an aquarium context, small-bodied Hemibrycon would likely accept a range of commercially available foods suitable for active characids: fine-grade flake or micropellet as a staple supplemented with live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, cyclops, and bloodworm. Feeding data specific to H. fasciatus remains sparse.

Mating

Hemibrycon fasciatus has not been bred in captivity in any published account, and mating behaviour has not been documented in the wild for this species. As a member of the family Characidae, H. fasciatus would be expected to follow the egg-scattering reproductive strategy typical of the family: free-spawning over substrate or vegetation, with fertilised eggs sinking or adhering to fine-leaved plants and no parental investment from either sex.

In congeners and related characids from Colombian and Andean stream systems, breeding is often associated with seasonal hydrological cues — rising water levels or changes in temperature and photoperiod linked to the onset of rainy seasons — which stimulate spawning activity. Whether H. fasciatus exhibits clear seasonality in reproduction has not been established from field data.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Hemibrycon fasciatus are available in the published or hobby literature. Based on the biology of the genus and family, breeding would be expected to follow the general characid pattern: egg-scattering over fine vegetation or substrate, adhesive or slightly adhesive eggs, no parental care, and eggs and larvae vulnerable to cannibalism by adults.

For aquarists who might attempt breeding, the approach used for other small Andean stream characids would be a reasonable starting point — a separate spawning tank with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, soft to moderately hard water at an appropriate temperature, and removal of adults after spawning. Fry would require very fine first foods at hatching. In the absence of empirical data, all breeding guidance for this species remains speculative.

In the aquarium

Hemibrycon fasciatus is not established in the aquarium hobby and is unknown in the ornamental fish trade. The species is known from scientific type material collected in Colombia, and no captive husbandry information has been published. It is unlikely to be encountered by aquarists outside of specialist ichthyological research contexts.

Were the species to become available, husbandry expectations based on its ecology and systematics would suggest: a well-oxygenated, clean aquarium with moderate current to replicate stream conditions; a temperature in the moderate tropical range appropriate to its Andean-piedmont provenance; peaceful small-to-medium characid tankmates; and a varied diet of small live and frozen foods alongside prepared foods. Its modest size of around 3 in would suit a medium community aquarium. Data sparse; all husbandry notes are extrapolated from genus and family.

Conservation

Hemibrycon fasciatus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List as of this writing; no assessment record exists for the species. As a small endemic freshwater fish described from a restricted drainage on the Pacific slope of Colombia, it is potentially at risk from the pressures affecting Colombia's Andean and Pacific-versant stream fauna more broadly: deforestation, agricultural run-off, water abstraction, and the modification of riparian zones.

Colombia's Pacific versant ichthyofauna is among the least-studied in South America and is home to a high proportion of narrowly distributed endemic species. The San Juan River basin, the type locality of H. fasciatus, is a biodiversity hotspot under ongoing anthropogenic pressure. Without an IUCN assessment or population survey, the conservation status of this species remains unknown; the absence of an assessment should not be taken as an indication of security. Targeted surveys to establish population size and distribution, and formal assessment for the Red List, would be valuable next steps.
